Hello.

According to Spybot Search and Destroy and AdAware, my computer appears to be infected with VirtuMonde (if not other spyware as well). I have the classic symptoms: occasional pop-up windows displaying ads appearing seemingly at random, but always when I perform an internet search, and also somewhat lessened all-around PC performance.

I've done large amounts of research on VirtuMonde and it is abundantly clear how tenacious and difficult to remove this virus is. I have seen the elaborate and lengthy instructions on how to remove VirtuMonde manually, but I am very hesitant to approach this method as I do not have very in-depth computer experience, and the last thing want to do is destabilize or harm my system by deleting necessary files. However, I have read other threads here on BleepingComputer regarding this virus, and it appears that you have successfully helped others permanantly remove this annoyance.

I have an HP Media Center PC with Windows XP Media Center Edition SP2. My main security software is Norton Internet Security.

Unlike most people I know exactly how and when I acquired VirtuMonde. I ran a bad .exe file on 10/27 that I thought was a "legitimate" keygen. Yeah, I was considering stealing software (which I did not by the way, I bought the title). I know what you're thinking, and believe me, if I were just a little more flexible I'd be kicking myself in the face repeatedly. Still, I throw myself upon your mercy and beg for your assistance. If it would be of any use, I can provide a link to the very file that caused the trouble in the first place.

Here is what I have done up this point:

1. Repeated complete scans in Safe Mode with Norton, Spybot:S&D, and Lavasoft AdAware. All three programs came up with differing results, though all three showed multiple instances of VirtuMonde and also "Win32.Trojan(?)" (forgive me I do not remember the exact name). After repeated scans and deletions of suspect files and registry instances, all three programs are showing the system to be mostly* clean, and while pop-up windows continue, their frequency is somewhat lessened. At the beginning of this infection, Norton would frequently pop up a small window stating "Downloader blocked. Your computer is safe." or something very similar... this no longer occurs after using SB:S&D and AdAware. *Spybot:S&D continues to always show the same four registry key entries every single scan:

Virtumonde: [SBI $42352499] User settings (Registry key, nothing done)
HKEY_USERS\S-1-5-21-939639994-3255434343-1530449708-1008\Software\Microsoft\rdfa

Virtumonde: [SBI $47E741CD] Settings (Registry key, nothing done)
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\aoprndtws

Virtumonde: [SBI $7342F9D9] Settings (Registry key, nothing done)
HKEY_USERS\S-1-5-21-939639994-3255434343-1530449708-1008\Software\Microsoft\aldd

Virtumonde: [SBI $1F8EC695] Settings (Registry key, nothing done)
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\MSSMGR

2. I ran the Symantec program (FxVMonde) that looks specifically for VirtuMonde. This scan did not detect anything.

3. I have deleted all cookies, temporary internet files and the contents of the Recycle Bin.

4. I have downloaded and installed all of the most recent Windows Updates.

5. I scanned the computer with McAfee Stinger. Nothing was reported back to me, or at least did not report anything before deleting it.

6. Finally, I used HijackThis which generated the required log:

Hiya Mark, welcome to Bleeping Computer's security forum.

Go to the folder where Hijackthis is kept and rename the hijackthis application to "showme".
This can be done by right clicking on the program and clicking "rename".
Press enter, then open "showme.exe" by double clicking.
Post a new Hijackthis log from the newly named application.

Don't go making any more changes now, it could be dangerous.
I'll explain in more detail when I get the renamed log.

Hello D-Trojanator, thank you so much for your assistance.

All right, I renamed HijackThis.exe to showme.exe and here is the log produced:

Good work! Let's continue..

Hello there and welcome to Bleeping Computer's security forum.
My name is David, I will be helping you with your log today.

It is a good idea to print off these instructions. There is a possibility some of the instructions will need to be carried out where internet access is not available. It is important that you complete the instructions in the right order, and that you don't miss out any steps.

Please set your system to show all files.
Click Start, open My Computer, select the Tools menu and click Folder Options.
Select the View Tab. Under the Hidden files and folders heading, select Show hidden files and folders.
Uncheck: Hide file extensions for known file types
Uncheck the Hide protected operating system files (recommended) option.
Click Yes to confirm.

Start HijackThis, close all open windows leaving only HijackThis running. Place a check against each of the following if still present:

R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Default_Page_URL = http://ie.redirect.hp.com/svs/rdr?TYPE=3&a...&pf=desktop

Click on Fix Checked when finished and exit HijackThis.
Make sure your Internet Explorer is closed when you click Fix Checked!

Now reboot into Safe Mode.
This can be done tapping the F8 key as soon as you start your computer
You will be brought to a menu where you can choose to boot into safe mode.
Make sure you choose the option without networking support.

Using Windows Explorer, please locate the following files/folders, and delete them if still present:

C:\WINDOWS\system32\ssqro.dll
C:\WINDOWS\system32\nmwmmtxu.dll
C:\WINDOWS\system32\gvnnviay.dll

I want you to clean your cache and cookies from your internet explorer.
There are a few infected files which need to be removed from your system.

Close all instances of Internet Explorer .
Go to your control panel and open "Internet Options".
Click on the "General" tab.
Click the "Delete Cookies" button, then the "Delete Files" button.
If prompted, place a tick in the "Delete all offline content" box and click OK.

Also, please clean other Temporary files and Empty the Recycle Bin

Go to start and click on the "run" button.
Type the following in the box --> cleanmgr and click ok.
Let it scan your system for files to remove.
Make sure only Temporary Files, Temporary Internet Files, and Recycle Bin are checked.
Press OK to remove them.

Reboot back into normal mode.

Please download Combofix to your desktop.
Doubleclick combofix.exe to launch the application.

Follow the prompts that will be displayed on the screen.
Don't click on the window while the fix is running, because that will cause your system to hang.
When finished, it should produce a log, combofix.txt.
Post this log in your next reply together with a new hijackthislog.

Well, we've had a partial victory I think, though I've run into a possible snag?

I followed all of the instructions: I ran HijackThis and fixed the entries you indicated. I booted up in Safe Mode, cleared the Recycle Bin and Internet Files. Then I went to delete the three DLL files (and all three were indeed still in the WINDOWS/system32 folder)...

There is something strange about my computer not wanting to function properly in Safe Mode. Once booted into Safe Mode, a message comes up asking whether I want to continue in Safe Mode, or else do a System Restore. I choose "OK" to continue in Safe Mode. The desktop loads, but then only about five seconds pass, the computer beeps, the screen goes black, and the same message comes back again. I hit OK again, and the process repeats itself over and over. The problem is that if I open a window, say Windows Explorer, as soon as the five seconds pass, the screen goes black and the message comes back up. When I hit OK and the desktop reappears, Windows Explorer has closed. The exceptions to this are applications. If I can start an application quickly enough before the desktop disappears, it remains open in the foreground and I can use it even after the desktop disappears.

To make along story short, the only way I was able to access the DLL files was to open Windows Task Manager (Ctrl+ALT+Delete), choose File>New Task (Run) and then browse through the computer's folders in the dialogue box that appeared. This roundabout method worked however, and I was able to delete nmwmmtxu.dll and gvnnviay.dll. However, when I tried to delete ssqro.dll, it stated, even in Safe Mode, that the file was being used by another program, and would not delete it. I attempted to rename it, but to no avail. This is definitely one of the suspect files, as it was created at 14:30 on 27/10/2007, which was exactly when I infected the computer to begin with!

So I've downloaded ComboFix, but I did not want to proceed any further until I heard back from you regarding the ssqro.dll file, in case you have a way to remove it and need me to repeat the previous steps, going back into Safe Mode and re-deleting all of the files in case they have reappeared(?).

I have had no unusal error messages or abnormalities of any kind since performing these activities.

On the plus side, I have done numerous internet searches via Yahoo! and Google and no pop-up windows have appeared yet. Even more amazing, I did searches for "Hot Japanese Girls," "Discount Prescription Medications," and "Free Airline Tickets," and yet still nothing popped up.

I will anxiously await your further instructions. Thank you David for all of your help so far. Pehaps this will be easier and quicker than I had originally thought.

Does BleepingComputer accept donations? I have not seen anything whilst browsing, yet from everything else I've seen, it's rather clear to me that you have all earned it for the impressive work you do. (edit: I saw the donation button in your signature.)

Cheerio

Edit 2: I'm getting a few pop-up windows again... make that a lot of pop-up windows. =:^ (

Hi there Mark,

I've got a bit more time on my hands to explain a few things before we continue, let's step back a bit.

(Note: This "Bonjour" folder appeared in my Program Files directly after the infection, as far as I know, for I go into Program Files often and do not ever recall seeing it before. In a panic I deleted the mDNSResponder.exe file, yet there is a remaining DLL file named mdnsNSP.dll that I am unable to delete. I don't know if any of this is significant but there you go.)

This Bonjour service is part of iTunes, I'm assuming you have that installed at the moment. It's not an essential process and I believe it's to do with music sharing between computers, so I don't think it matters that you deleted the legitimate file. However, you've left yourself with an empty running service, that will probably be slowing down your computer. There are two options to take, and I want you to let me know which one sounds best to you; firstly you can uninstall and reinstall iTunes and you would get everything back as per the standard iTunes installation, or secondly you could delete that empty service and make do without the music sharing ability (which no-one really uses anyway!). Let me know what you wish to do. "Used by the Apple Rendezvous networking system. Responds to network requests for resources if setup."

As far as the problems with safe mode are concerned, I think we should do our best to clear all the malware off the PC first; there is a high chance that the malware is causing this loop in safe mode where that question popup occurs; we can use "delete on reboot" options in normal mode to remove the rest of the malware, and hopefully unlock safe mode afterwards. I didn't really think that the ssqro.dll would be successfully deleted in safe mode, the fact you couldn't delete it shows that it's 'hooked' into your system and we'll need to put out a bigger tool to delete the infection. As the only thing you did was clear your temporary files, it shows that this problem in safe mode was there before we started, perhaps not before you got infected though? Don't worry if you have no idea when it started, but it would be useful to know.

Click start > run and type: notepad, then hit enter.
Copy and paste the following into the notepad window:

File::
C:\WINDOWS\system32\ssqro.dll

Click File > Save and call it "CFScript.txt" (without quotes).
Save it to your desktop.

Refering to the picture above, drag ComboFix-Do.txt into ComboFix.exe
Combofix will run, and a text file will open. Please post it back here.
Note: Do not mouseclick combofix's window whilst it's running. That may cause it to stall.

So, post back with the combofix log, and also post a new Hijackthis log, after combofix has been run.
You may find that combofix will need to reboot your computer, don't worry if it does, it's normal.

Even though I live near Seattle, I'm close to operating on London time.

Done and done... I created the script and ran it in ComboFix. The system restarted automatically, and then I ran HijackThis. I think it is worth mentioning that I have the program EndItAll on my computer and normally I run this as soon as the computer starts up in order to shut down all unnecessary programs (and I have an HP computer so believe me there are a lot of them). I have done this completely out of habit so often that I seldom gave it any thought. Up to this point, you have been seeing HJ Logs after EndItAll was run, but the log I post here was produced directly after startup before I shut down anything. In fact, until this is resolved I will not use EndItAll. I'm sorry I did not think about this before... I imagine it may be significant.

The Bonjour folder bothered me the most because it was created at the same moment as the infection. As previously posted, I deleted the .exe file it contained, but was unable to delete the remaining DLL file. Last night (before I heard back from you) I gave it another try and was able to delete it, so the Bonjour folder and its contents are now gone. Right away I have noticed, again, an absence of pop-up windows (so far), and yes, a seeming improvement in performance. This computer came with iTunes, but I uninstalled it soon after purchase, as I have a Creative media player and wanted to use that instead. I see however that there is still a reference to Bonjour in the HijackThis log, so if possible, I definitely want to delete this empty reference. I do not have iTunes installed or even on the computer so I can not reinstall and uninstall it. iTunes does not show up on the Remove/Add Programs compilation.

ssqro.dll is gone... so ComboFix was able to remove it? Amazing! Just for the heck of it, I searched out all files that were created about 14:15 on 27/10/2007, the time of the infection. I did find five that looked suspicious... well, to me anyway. I attached a compiled screenshot of these files and their paths. I will not do anything with these unless you think it is prudent to do so.

Here is the ComboFix log:

Good work! Let's continue..
We can go ahead and delete the Bonjour service, now I know you do not have iTunes installed.

It is a good idea to print off these instructions. There is a possibility some of the instructions will need to be carried out where internet access is not available. It is important that you complete the instructions in the right order, and that you don't miss out any steps.

Download KillBox from the following link :
http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/files/killbox.php
Unzip the folder to your desktop.

Go ahead and delete this folder now:
C:\qoobox

Start Killbox.exe
Select the "Delete on Reboot" option.
Click on the "All Files" button (!important!),which will then flash green.
Copy the complete text in bold below to the clipboard by highlighting the filepaths and pressing Control + C:

C:\WINDOWS\system32\lrobeugg.dll
C:\WINDOWS\system32\eobqxuup.dll
C:\WINDOWS\system32\xqjiypfb.dll
C:\pora.exe
C:\WINDOWS\popcinfot.dat

Open 'file' in the killboxmenu on top and choose Paste from clipboard
You must use the file File menu--pasting by right-clicking the mouse will only enter one file.
Then press the button that looks like a red circle with a white X in it.
Killbox will tell you that all listed files will be removed on next reboot and asks if you would like to Reboot now, click "yes".
Click OK at any Pending File Rename Operations prompt, let me know if there appear.
If you don't get that message, reboot manually.
Your computer should reboot now.

Open notepad and copy and paste the following text in the quote box into the window:

@echo off
sc delete "Bonjour Service"

Save this as fix3.bat
Choose to save as all files.
This is how the batch must look afterwards: Posted Image
Doubleclick fix3.bat and let the program run.
A small black dos window will flash, this is normal.

Please open notepad and and copy and paste next bold in it:
(don't forget to copy and paste REGEDIT4)

REGEDIT4

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\system\currentcontrolset\control\lsa]
"Authentication Packages"="msv1_0"

Save this as "fix.reg" Choose to save as *all files and place it on your desktop.
It should look like this: Posted Image
Doubleclick on it and when it asks you if you want to merge the contents to the registry, click yes/ok.

Please perform this online scan: Kaspersky Webscan
Note that this scanner will only work on Internet Explorer, so please use this browser for the scan.
Read the Requirements and Privacy statement, then select "Accept"
A dialogue box will appearing asking "Do you want to install this software?" Name: kavwebscan_unicode.cab
Select "Install" to download the ActiveX controls that allows ActiveScan to run.

When the download is complete it will say ready, click "Next"
Select a target to scan: Click on "My Computer"
When the scan is complete choose to save the results as "Save as Text"
Post the Kaspersky scan results in your next reply, along with a new Hijackthis log.

All right then.

~ I deleted the qoobox folder and its contents.
~ Ran Killbox, deleted the five files, and rebooted computer.
~ Created and ran the fix3.bat file.
~ Created and ran the fix.reg file.
~ Ran the Kaspersky scan, which produced the following log:

Well I've been using the internet off and on all day, and as yet I've experienced no pop-up windows or any other abnormalities. This has been the case since ComboFix deleted the ssqro.dll file and I deleted the Bonjour folder.

I hope this latest batch of info helps pull the plug for good on VMonde.

I think we have almost certainly 'pulled the plug' on Virtumonde!

Please delete this folder:
C:\!KillBox

We need to purge your infected system restore points.
On the Desktop, right-click My Computer, then click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab near the top of the window.
Check Turn off System Restore, click Apply, and then click OK.
More information on how to disable your system restore can be found here.

We want to create a new, clean restore point. Please first reboot your computer.
On the Desktop, right-click My Computer, then click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab near the top of the window.
Uncheck "Turn off System Restore", click Apply, and then click OK.

Click Start > All Programs > Accessories > System Tools, and select System Restore.
In the System Restore wizard, select the box next the text labeled "Create a restore point" and click the Next button.
Type a description for your new restore point - Something like "After trojan/spyware cleanup".
Click Create, and after it has created the restore point, click "Close".
Further instructions on creating a restore point can be found here

After doing that, I can happily declare that your system appears clean to me!
How is the computer runnning now? Do you have any questions I can answer for you?
David

I performed these final tasks with no problems. To be honest, since performing all of these activities, the first thing I noticed is that my system starts up from a start or restart at least 50% faster than it used to. Maybe it's just wishful thinking, but all applications and processes seem to be going a little more smoothly and quickly. Fan-bloody-tastic.

I do have one final question in particular:

Before I began all of this activity, I backed up my entire system on an external hard drive, plugged in the usual way via USB port. Now this back-up undoubtedly contains most of the infected files. It's perfectly safe to go into My Computer, choose this drive, and simply delete all of the content on it, correct, and I do not risk any reinfection by doing so?

I hope my meager donation will be enough to extend my enormous gratitude for helping me with this annoying problem. This has been a great learning experience... lesson 1: don't ever download anything from websites called "Crackzilla."

Kindest regards,

~Mark

I'm happy to hear that the system is running a lot faster - malware can be an awful resource hog.
You should be fine to access that external drive and delete the contents of it, shouldn't be a problem.
I've heard about Crackzilla before, it definately doesn't sound like a friendly site.
Thanks for the donation; although it hasn't come through yet, I appreciate the kind sentiment.

Is there anything else I can help you with?
Oh and one more thing, make sure you keep your Norton up to date.
Keeping anti-malware tools up to date is the best way of keeping your system protected.

David,

Thanks for checkng in. As of this afternoon everything is still running smoothly, so I consider my problem solved. I noticed that my Norton has not been functioning quite right since I installed AdAware... my guess is that the two programs conflict in some way. In Norton, under settings>Auto Protect it reads "error" in red. I will probably uninstall AdAware and I'm sure this will resolve the problem. Norton even at the best of times seems to be cumbersome and ill-mannered, though it has a great firewall.

My donation should hopefully have come through now... PayPal was confused about my supposed pre-existing account.

Thank you again for all of your help!
