My Computer: Dell Dimension 4400 with Windows XP Home Edition
Upgraded To: SP1a (won't take SP2)

Ok. I upgraded to Sp1a and the computer installed and held it fine, even after restarting and use.
But when I install SP2 and restart it goes to a blue screen stop error. Here is the error: 0x00000024 (0x00190203, 0x82F90A50, 0xC0000102, 0x00000000)

Please, please help!!!

You haven't done a repair install recently have you? Make sure your pop up blocker is shut off for the update. Before you try to download, read this preparation guide:
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/sp2/sp2_whattoknow.mspx
Try downloading SP2 from here instead of Windows Updates:

is the only way you can get the bluescreens is from the sp2 installation?????

run sfc /scannow, check event logs for yellow "!'s" or red "X's"

if so: no comment just yet

if not: run a memtest (www.memtest.org), hdd test (check manufactures website for diagnostic tools!!!!)

goodluck
=)

No no repair. Only recent installation or download was SP1a but it held it fine. Restarted and ran with it fine. The only problem I get is when I try to install (from disk not download) SP2. Installation finishes perfectly but when I go to restart the computer to finish the installation I get that blue screen. I was hoping someone could interpret the error. I heard it's perameters tell you where the error is but I could be wrong about that.
Oh and let me mention that once I go into safe mode and restore the computer to before SP2 was installed it works great. Is how I'm on it now. I can't even use the computer unless I take SP2 out.
Yes my pop up blocker is off and like I said the only time it gives the blue screen is when I go to restart the computer after installation of SP2
will try memtest and let you know how it goes
will check the dell site and see if there are any diagnostic tools. will let you know how that goes.
Any other suggestions thus far? I have a feeling this problem isn't gonna be that easy.
Thanks for all your help.

Check your Event Viewer and see if it shows any problems recently

Is there a possibility you CD is scratched? Maybe try the download site I gave you. I just found the site for troubleshooting stop errors. I'll have to do some more reading

I'd go to http://www.ultimatebootcd.com/
make a bootable cd with it, reboot and run

StressCPU
Memtest86+
and depending on the HDD manufacturer the appropriate diagnostic tools

when completed, post the results from each of them.

the reason I would recommend the HDD diagnostics, is based upon http://www.microsoft.com/technet/prodtechn...m.mspx?mfr=true

which leads me to believe the HDD has issues.

As the STOP 0x24 error is an NTFS File System error ( http://aumha.org/a/stop.php#0x24 ) - I'd first suggest running chkdsk /f /r from the Run dialog. When it asks you to reboot, select Yes and reboot to run it.

As SP2 is very, very sensitive to older drivers and malware - I'd suggest scanning for malware with these free, online scans:
http://safety.live.com
http://housecall.trendmicro.com

Next I would update your hardware drivers (all of them) to the latest available version. Go to this link ( http://support.dell.com/support/downloads/...;l=en&s=gen ) and enter the Service Tag number to find the latest drivers that Dell has available for your system.

Once you've run chkdsk /f /r and have updated the drivers - the try installing SP2. If it still doesn't work, then there's some more troubleshooting to do - but the above procedure will fix most issues with the installation of SP2.

Ok few new turnabouts.
For one my internet connection is slow so this is all taking some time.
Somewhere along the way it was suggested that I download Critical Update For Windows XP: 885523
Downloaded and installed it. Seems to be holding fine.
ran sfc /scannow
ran all the way through with no errors
ran the dell diagnostic but it wouldn't complete. It told me to go to http://msdn2.microsoft.com/netframework/ and download .Net Framework & then re-install the dell diagnostic
the only problem is when I go there I cannot find what to download. I even go to the download tab but there are so many choices with similar names that I am not sure what to download
ran chkdsk /f and when it opted me to schedule it to start on restart I said yes and it did. however i think i need to redo it because i forgot to write in the /r
looked at the even viewer. quite a few alerts and errors. could be because it's just being twitchy without sp2 but we'll see.
one seemed important: WPA_NOT_ACTIVATED Message: Your Windows product has not been activated with Microsoft yet. Please use the product activation within %1 days. So ok I'll activate right. But the instructions it gives me doesn't work: Go to start menu, point to all programs, and then click activate windows. <----------Activate Windows is not where it says it is.
Then tells me to go to run and type %windir%\system32oobe\msoobe.exe/a
I type it and it tells me it can't find it.

MS .NET, download/install version 3.0 (the latest). If you have an earlier version now installed, uninstall it first.

Chkdsk /f is almost like chkdsk /r, so if you ran that, it's OK. Chkdsk /r is just tad more comprehensive.

Product activation in XP: Start/All Programs/Accessories/System Tools/Activate Windows.

Hey. Instead of %windir%\system32\oobe\msoobe.exe/a I tried the actal C:\WINDOWS\system32\oobe\msoobe.exe/a it gave me the same error: couldn't find
so i tried C:\WINDOWS\system32\oobe\msoobe.exe it ran without error but nothing else happened
so I went there. opened the windows folder. opened the system32 folder. opened the oobe folder. found msoobe.exe and double clicked it. nothing happened.
kinda baffled.

Ok just for giggles i tried again to download and install the .net framework and this time i DID get an error. told me i couldnt install until i have sp2 and of course trying to figure out why i cant install and hold sp2 is why i was trying to get the .net framework file/ files for the dell diagnostic tool. so i cant use that. will try some more suggestions tomorrorw.

If you cannot install .Net 3.0, then install 2.0 (assuming your system meets whatever prerequisites may exist for install).

If it was my system, I would look in Event Viewer for clues as to what problems need some attention.

FWIW - the .NET framework versions are independent - and different programs require different versions of them. You should have v1.1 and v2.0 installed (I have heard that you can also install v3.0 in XP).
