I made a stupid mistake by accepting an ActiveX object and my machine was affected by this malware which will open
fake virus warnings and open IE directing me to yourprivacyguard.com or safenavweb.com. It also changed my
desktop wallpaper and added three shortcuts.

I have since Run AVG, CA anti virus, CA spyware removal, and seem to have solved the IE explorer problem and the shortcuts but my desktop is still blank. After clicking on 'Proprties' this is the only address /url available : file://C:\WINDOWS\privacy_danger\index.htm

I would like to know how to check my registry and get my desktop back. Also to make sure that there are no more threats present.

thanks

Hi,
Welcome to Bleeping Computer.

Please read this thread and start from step 9.
Download Hijack This and post a log here in a reply.

I want you to show hidden files. There are instructions HERE to help you do this.
You should have Administrator rights to perform the fixes. Some of the instructions I give may need to be printed or saved for reference during the fix. Some of the fix will be done in safe mode so you will be unable to access this thread at that time. These instuctions should be read first, then followed. If you do not understand something, don't be afraid to ask, or see if I'm on chat.

Hi,
You do not need to start a new topic, in this topic, click the add reply button, not the new thread button. I will merge your topics for you.
Please give me some time to look it over and I will get back to you as soon as possible.

Hi,

Please download SmitfraudFix (by S!Ri) to your Desktop.

Double-click SmitfraudFix.exe
Select option #1 - Search by typing 1 and press "Enter"; a text file will appear, which lists infected files (if present).
Please copy/paste the content of that report into your next reply.

**If the tool fails to launch from the Desktop, please move SmitfraudFix.exe directly to the root of the system drive (usually C:), and launch from there.

Note : process.exe is detected by some antivirus programs (AntiVir, Dr.Web, Kaspersky) as a "RiskTool"; it is not a virus, but a program used to stop system processes. Antivirus programs cannot distinguish between "good" and "malicious" use of such programs, therefore they may alert the user.

Hi,
During the course of this fix, do not run any other Anti VIrus or Anti Spyware products as they could remove Malicous software uninstallers making them moere difficult to remove using conventional methods.

You are infected with smitfraud.

You should print out these instructions, or copy them to a NotePad file for reading while in Safe Mode, because you will not be able to connect to the Internet to read from this site.

Next, please reboot your computer in Safe Mode by doing the following :
  • Restart your computer
  • After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, tap the F8 key continually;
  • Instead of Windows loading as normal, a menu with options should appear;
  • Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode, then press "Enter".
  • Choose your usual account.
Once in Safe Mode, double-click on SmitfraudFix.exe
Select option #2 - Clean by typing 2 and press "Enter" to delete infected files.

You will be prompted : "Registry cleaning - Do you want to clean the registry ?"; answer "Yes" by typing Y and press "Enter" in order to remove the Desktop background and clean registry keys associated with the infection.

The tool will now check if wininet.dll is infected. You may be prompted to replace the infected file (if found); answer "Yes" by typing Y and press "Enter".

The tool may need to restart your computer to finish the cleaning process; if it doesn't, please restart it into Normal Windows.
A text file will appear onscreen, with results from the cleaning process; please copy/paste the content of that report into your next reply.
The report can also be found at the root of the system drive, usually at C:\rapport.txt

Warning : running option #2 on a non infected computer will remove your Desktop background.

When you have done this, rescan with Hijack This and post a fresh log here in a reply.

Hi,
Sorry about the delay, i had a breif problem with my ISP.
Before we begin this fix, can you please save these instructions in Notepad to your desktop, or print them, for reference. Some of this fix will be done in Safe mode, where you will not be able to access this thread on the internet. If you have questions at any point, or are unsure of the instructions, feel free to post here and ask for clarification before proceeding.

1.
First download AVG Anti-Spyware from HERE and save that file to your desktop.
This is a 30 day trial of the program
  • Once you have downloaded AVG Anti-Spyware, locate the icon on the desktop and double-click it to launch the set up program.
  • Once the setup is complete you will need run AVG Anti-Spyware and update the definition files.
  • On the main screen select the icon "Update" then select the "Update now" link.
    • Next select the "Start Update" button, the update will start and a progress bar will show the updates being installed.
  • Once the update has completed select the "Scanner" icon at the top of the screen, then select the "Settings" tab.
  • Once in the Settings screen click on "Recommended actions" and then select "Quarantine".
  • Under "Reports"
    • Select "Automatically generate report after every scan"
    • Un-Select "Only if threats were found"
Close AVG Anti-Spyware, Do not run a scan just yet, we will shortly.

2.
While TeaTimer is an excellent tool for the prevention of spyware, it can sometimes prevent HijackThis from fixing certain things.
Please disable TeaTimer for now until you are clean. TeaTimer can be re-activated once your HijackThis log is clean.
  • Open Spybot Search & Destroy.
  • In the Mode menu click "Advanced mode" if not already selected.
  • Choose "Yes" at the Warning prompt.
  • Expand the "Tools" menu.
  • Click "Resident".
  • Uncheck the "Resident "TeaTimer" (Protection of overall system settings) active." box.
  • In the File menu click "Exit" to exit Spybot Search & Destroy.

3.
Updating Java
  • Go to Start > Control Panel double-click on the Java Icon (coffee cup) in the Control Panel.
  • It will say "Java Plug-in" under the icon.
Please find the update button or tab in the Java Control Panel. Update your Java then reboot.
  • If you are unable to update you can manually update by going here:http://www.java.com/en/download/manual.jsp

4.
Please download ATF Cleaner by Atribune.
This program is for XP and Windows 2000 only
Do not run it yet. We will use it later. Save it somewhere you will remember, like your desktop.

5.
Please re-open HiJackThis and choose do a system scan only. Check the boxes next to ONLY the entries listed below:

O2 - BHO: IntelVideoCodec - {33A12BEB-3219-4CA8-99B4-733192704C62} - C:\WINDOWS\system32\IntelVideoDivX.dll
O2 - BHO: BetaDivX - {48BF2BC0-2945-11D8-8CAC-00080FC65465} - C:\WINDOWS\system32\IR9V0_QCX.dll
O2 - BHO: (no name) - {77701e16-9bfe-4b63-a5b4-7bd156758a37} - (no file)
O2 - BHO: (no name) - {90CF5384-7C70-4CD6-A30D-B2F14537B5C3} - (no file)

Now close all windows other than HiJackThis, including browsers, so that nothing other than HijackThis is open, then click Fix Checked. A box will pop up asking you if you wish to fix the selected items. Please choose YES. Once it has fixed them, please exit/close HijackThis.

6.
Reboot into Safe Mode by continuously tapping the F8 key as soon as the computer begins to boot. A menu should come up where you will be given the option to enter Safe Mode.

7.
Using Windows Explorer (to get there right-click your Start button and go to "Explore"), please delete these files (if present):

C:\WINDOWS\system32\IR9V0_QCX.dll
C:\WINDOWS\system32\IntelVideoDivX.dll

Close all windows and browsers and stay in safe mode for the next two steps.

8.-Still in Safe Mode
Please open ATF Cleaner by Atribune.
This program is for XP and Windows 2000 onlyDouble-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
Under Main choose: Select All
Click the Empty Selected button.
If you use Firefox browserClick Firefox at the top and choose: Select All
Click the Empty Selected button.
NOTE: If you would like to keep your saved passwords, please click No at the prompt.
If you use Opera browserClick Opera at the top and choose: Select All
Click the Empty Selected button.
NOTE: If you would like to keep your saved passwords, please click No at the prompt.
Click Exit on the Main menu to close the program.
For Technical Support, double-click the e-mail address located at the bottom of each menu.

9.-Still in Safe Mode
  • IMPORTANT: Do not open any other windows or programs while AVG Anti-Spyware is scanning, it may interfere with the scanning proccess:
  • Lauch AVG Anti-Spyware by double-clicking the icon on your desktop.
  • Select the "Scanner" icon at the top and then the "Scan" tab then click on "Complete System Scan".
  • AVG Anti-Spyware will now begin the scanning process, be patient this may take a little time.
Once the scan is complete do the following:
  • If you have any infections you will prompted, then select "Apply all actions"
  • Next select the "Reports" icon at the top.
  • Select the "Save report as" button in the lower left hand of the screen and save it to a text file on your system (make sure to remember where you saved that file, this is important).
  • Close AVG Anti-Spyware and reboot your system back into Normal Mode and post the results of the AVG Anti-Spyware report scan.

When you are finished, please reboot the computer as you normally would.

10.
Open HijackThis, click Config, click Misc Tools
Click "Open Uninstall Manager"
Click "Save List" (generates uninstall_list.txt)
Click Save, copy and paste the results in your next post.

Post a new HijackThis log, the AVG Antispyware Scan, the uninstall list here in a reply. Also, please let me know of any problems you may have encountered or questions you want to ask.

Hi,

Please click on >> Start >> Control Panel Go to Add/Remove Programs locate and then uninstall the following programs(if present):

J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 6
J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 9
Java 2 Runtime Environment, SE v1.4.2_03

Old versions of Java are exploitable and should be removed.

Congratulations, your log is now clean.
Here is a list of tools that I like to recommend to people to help ensure safe surfing on the internet, and to help you from getting infected again.
  • SpywareGuard
Works as a Spyware "Shield" to protect your computer from getting malware in the first place.
  • IE-SpyAd
This tool puts over 5000 sites in your restricted zone so you'll be protected when you visit innocent-looking sites that aren't actually innocent at all.
  • Windows Updates
It is very important to make sure that both Internet Explorer and Windows are kept current with the latest critical security patches from Microsoft. To do this just start Internet Explorer and select Tools > Windows Update, and follow the online instructions from there.
You can now Rehide your system files by using these instructions:
  • Click Start.
  • Open My Computer.
  • Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options.
  • Select the View Tab.
  • Under the Hidden files and folders heading unselect Show hidden files and folders.
  • Check the Hide protected operating system files (recommended) option.
  • Click Yes to confirm.
  • Click OK.
To find out more information about how you got infected in the first place, a test you can run, great safe tools you can use as well as some great guidelines to follow to prevent future infections you can read this article written by Tony Klein.

If you have any further problems or questions be sure to ask.

Hi Sarah,

:)

I have uninstalled the 3 java programs and everything looks fine.
I have some questions,
1. I am running Win Patrol, Tea timer and windows defender - do i need all 3 and which should I uninstall.
2. Is Clean my Pc of any use at all? how often should it be used?
3. My CD Burner is not showing up on the device manager (DEll PC) Is this a hardware issue or what, I have tried cleaning the lens but it will not run any CD/DVD. How do I tell if the burner is kaput or if it is software issue? Any ideas?
4. Can I run spy guard which is a realtime spyware protection with my CA realtime anti-spyware?
5. IE-SpyAd is only for explorer correct..I mainly use firefox, so i am guessing this may not be necessary.
6. Apart from defrag are there any other cleanups/maintainace required.
7.Is it worthwile to keep all the downloaded sotware likeHijack this, smitfraudfix, atf cleaner. or uninstall?

Finally, Sarah - thanks a lot for your time and your trouble, it really is very much appreciated you have no idea how much grief this spyware issue gave me.

Regards

alfie
