:flowers: Does anyone know how to open an MDI file in MS Windows? In my "My Documents" folder I have several files, most are photos, that are saved as MDI files by MS Windows. I read somewhere that MS Win will save a normal GIF or JPEG file as an MDI in certain situations like when old files are transferred from an older computer to a new one ?!?! Not sure if that is correct but can't find how to open these files. When you click open, the box comes up asking you what program you would like to use to open the file. I have chosen Word from the list to try to open the MDI files that I know were originally made in Word, but those files wont open either. I would be so very happy if someone could tell me how to open such a file as many are old photos that I no longer have copies of and would love to have again. If anyone knows what I am talking about, is there a way to avoid having files saved as MDI files ? Thanks so very much, MaryAnn

Hi, AWriterWithGuts! Welcome to BC!

MDI files are a special kind of image file that is made by Microsoft Office 2003 and later. Since it's a proprietary format, you need MS Office 2003 or newer to view the files. If you already have Office 2003 installed, look for a program called Microsoft Office Imaging in the Microsoft Office folder in your Start Menu.

Alternatively, I found a free program that purports to be able to open these files. I haven't tested it so I can't vouch for it. It's at http://www.hot.ee/mdiviewer/
