Hi,

I've had this really annoying triangle with an exclamation mark in my system tray since yesterday and no spyware program seems to be able to detect it, leave alone remove it. I do not know what it is, but upon searching through google, I see experts pointing out that it could possibly be a SmitFraud spyware. Searching more on that led me to this website. I've tried the basic steps provided on this website regarding installign SmitFraudFix.exe don't seem to work. There was a similar program Smitrem.exe. That didn't seem to work either. So, this webiste suggested I create an account and post my HijackThis log here. So here it. Can anyone please help me remove this nuicance?

Welcome to the BleepingComputer HijackThis Logs and Analysis forum Nikhil Shah
My name is Richie and i'll be helping you to fix your problems.

Please move HijackThis to a permanent folder on the hard drive such as C:\HJT.
Create a new folder and place HijackThis.exe inside that folder so that the backups of log changes it creates are saved in the same folder and can be used to reverse any line entry deletion if found to be necessary.
If you run Hijackthis from the desktop, the files it removes will not be backed up properly.

How to create a new folder named HJT
1. Click Start/My Computer,in the 'My Computer' window, open the window in which you want to create the new folder, click on Local Disk C:
2. From the 'File' menu choose 'New'.
3. From the 'New' menu choose 'Folder'.
4. Type the folder name: HJT
5. Then press Enter.

If you need help, follow the info in the link below:
http://russelltexas.com/malware/createhjtfolder.htm

Your version of Sun Java is out of date.
Older versions have vulnerabilities that malware can use to infect your system.
Please follow these steps to remove older versions of Sun Java, and then update.
1. Download the latest version of Java Runtime Environment (JRE)
2. Scroll down to where it says 'Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6 update 3'.
3. Click the "Download" button to the right.
4. Check the box that says: "Accept License Agreement".
5. The page will refresh.
6. Click on the link to download 'Windows Offline Installation, Multi-language' and save to your desktop.
7. Close any programs you may have running - especially your web browser.
8. Go to Start > Control Panel double-click on Add/Remove programs and remove all older versions of Java.
9. Check any item with Java Runtime Environment (JRE or J2SE) in the name.
10. Click the Change/Remove button.
11. Repeat as many times as necessary to remove each Java version.
12. Reboot your computer once all Java components are removed.
13. Then from your desktop double-click on jre-6u3-windows-i586-p.exe to install the newest version.

Download SDFix.exe and save it to your desktop:
http://downloads.andymanchesta.com/RemovalTools/SDFix.exe

* Double click on SDFix on your desktop, and install the fix to C:\

Please then reboot your computer into Safe Mode by doing the following:

* Restart your computer
* After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, tap the F8 key continually;
* Instead of Windows loading as normal, a menu with options should appear;
* Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode, then press "Enter".
* Choose your usual account.

* In Safe Mode,go to and open the C:\SDFix folder, then double click on RunThis.bat to start the script.
* Type Y to begin the script.
* It will remove the Trojan Services then make some repairs to the registry and prompt you to press any key to Reboot.
* Press any Key and it will restart the PC.
* Your system will take longer that normal to restart as the fixtool will be running and removing files.
* When the desktop loads the Fixtool will complete the removal and display Finished, then press any key to end the script and load your desktop icons.
* Finally open the SDFix folder on your desktop and copy and paste the contents of the results file Report.txt into your next reply.

If you have previously downloaded ComboFix,please delete that version now.
Now download Combofix and save to your desktop:
Note:
It is important that it is saved directly to your desktop

Close any open browsers.
Double click on combofix.exe and follow the prompts.
When it's finished it will produce a log.
Post the entire contents of C:\ComboFix.txt into your next reply.
Note:
Do not mouseclick combofix's window while it's running.
That may cause the program to freeze/hang.

Do NOT post the ComboFix-quarantined-files.txt unless I ask.
*NOTE*
In case your Antivirus or any other realtime scanner is displaying an alert after you downloaded Combofix or while you use Combofix, please disable your scanner and redownload Combofix again.
Some scanners may see some combofix related components as suspicious and block or delete them while there's nothing wrong with them.

Also post a new Hijackthis log please.

Hello Richie,

Firstly, let me thank you for all your help.

I followed the steps you asked me to and I've pasted the items you've asked for.

However, I wanted to point out something interesting. After I had run SDFix and my computer restarted. The annoying icon on my system tray had disappeared and my computer was back to its usual speed. However, since your post asked me to go throug hte Combo Fix. I did that and the icon has appeared again. I'm not sure if this was mere coincidence or a mistake on ComboFix's part.

You have a Backdoor Trojan present on your pc, FREXUP2.EXE
A Backdoor is a software program that gives an attacker unauthorized access to a machine and the means for remotely controlling the machine without the user's knowledge. A Backdoor compromises system integrity by making changes to the system that allow it to be used by the attacker for malicious purposes unknown to the user.

They are typically installed without user interaction through security exploits, and may allow an attacker to remotely control the infected machine. Such risks may allow the attacker to install additional malware and use the compromised machine to participate in denial of service attacks, spamming, and bot nets, or to transmit sensitive data to a remote server. The malware may be cloaked and not visible to the user. These risks severely compromise the system by lowering security settings, installing 'backdoors,' infecting system files, or spreading to other networked machines.

If your computer was used for online banking or has credit card information on it, all passwords should be changed immediately to include those used for email, eBay and forums.
You should consider them to be compromised.
They should be changed by using a different computer and not the infected one,if not an attacker may get the new passwords and transaction information. Banking and credit card institutions should be notified of the possible security breech.

Since your computer was compromised read:
How to report ID theft, fraud, drive-by installs, hijacking and malware:
http://www.dslreports.com/faq/10451

When Should I Format, How Should I Reinstall:
http://www.dslreports.com/faq/10063

If you want us to go ahead and clean up your system then fair enough, but there’s no way I can guarantee your pc will be 100% safe once we’ve finished.
Let me know how you wish to proceed.

Hello Richie,

Thanks for your prompt reply. Since Im a student and have all my course softwares installed, I would want to take one more shot at cleaning it. Since you say you cannot guarantee cleaning it up, if you're unable to do so, I would end up having to resort to formatting my computer.

I had the following two questions:

What would you suggest in such a situation?
What does the Blinking arrow have to do with this backdoor trojan ?

Thanks

This will start ComboFix again.

Thanks so much for your help. The computer feels normal now. But you would probably be able to confirm whether it is normal looking at the logs.

Thanks a lot for all your help. I couldn't reply earlier as the F-Secure scan still hasn't completed and its already been 6 hours to it. I'm not sure whether I should let it continue or stop it now.

Anyways, in the meantime, I thought I'd let you take a look at my log from SuperAntiSpyware

Stop F-Secure if its still running.

Viewpoint Manager is considered as foistware instead of malware since it is installed without users approval but doesn't spy or do anything "bad".
This changed in 2006,read this article:
http://www.clickz.com/news/article.php/3561546

You are well advised to remove the program now.
Go to Start > Settings > Control Panel > Add/Remove Programs and remove the following programs if present, then restart your pc:
Viewpoint
Viewpoint Manager
Viewpoint Media Player

Run this online virus/spyware scan using Internet Explorer:
Kaspersky WebScanner
Next click Kaspersky Online Scanner
You will be prompted to install an ActiveX component from Kaspersky, Click Yes.
• The program will launch and then begin downloading the latest definition files:
• Once the files have been downloaded click on NEXT
• Now click on Scan Settings
• In the scan settings make that the following are selected:
• Scan using the following Anti-Virus database:
• Standard
• Scan Options:
• Scan Archives
• Scan Mail Bases
• Click OK
• Now under select a target to scan:
• Select My Computer
• This will start the program and scan your system.
• The scan will take a while so be patient and let it run.
• Once the scan is complete it will display if your system has been infected.
• Now click on the Save as Text button:
• Save the file to your desktop.
Copy and paste the contents of that file into your next reply.

The PC's working perfectly fine. I can't express how much I appreciated your prompt help on this topic. Thank you so much.

Btw, are you a professional Network Security Analyst or do you do this as a passion?

Thanks so much for the help. I've done what you've suggested.

I'm a Computer Engineering student as well and do follow a lot of safe practices to not let this happen. I happened to lend it to a friend for a week and realized that it was infected.

Infact I want to specialize in Network Security for Grad School. The amount of stuff that I read in the past 4 days tells me that I have a lot of learning to do before I reach anywhere. Once again, thanks for you help. You're Brilliant!!!
