I have been through the initial processes and have followed the instructions. However, Adaware seems to freeze at about the 75% mark, as does spybot S & D. I also run AVG anti virus. I run all the programs on a regular basis but the computer continues to seem slower and slower.

I have a Hijack This log - could someone please advise where the problem lies?

Also, I have 4 profiles on this computer - should I run the process (S&D, Adaware, AVG) in the individual profiles? Or should I just run them from the HP Owner?

Any assistance would be much appreciated.

Also, a bit that I missed - I run Windows XP Home with SP2. Any thoughts?

Hi therealtabby

I will be helping you with your problems.

If you could run Hijackthis again selecting "Do a system scan and save a logfile, and copy/paste the contents of the log in a reply to this thread rather than attaching it.

Thanks DC

DC - Great to make your acquaintance. Any assistance will be VERY much appreciated.

THis log I've titled HJT2 - give is a read and let me know what you think. Also, if there is anyway to pinpoint the origin of the issues, let me know where they came from, please. I've two teenagers that use this computer as well, and they will argue the skin off a seal that they're not responsible for the issues. Of course.

Hi therealtabby

Follow these steps in the order you see them.

1. I see you are running Teatimer.
I require you to disable it because it can interfere with the changes you'll make on your system.
When everything is done and your log is clean again, you can enable it again.
If teatimer gives you a warning afterwards that some changes were made, allow this instead of blocking it.

http://russelltexas.com/malware/teatimer.htm - How to disable TeaTimer during HijackThis Cleanup

2. Please download Combofix to your desktop.
Doubleclick combo.exe to launch the application.
Follow the prompts that will be displayed on the screen.
Don't click on the window while the fix is running, because that will cause your system to hang.
When finished, it should produce a log, combofix.txt.
Post this log in your next reply together with a new hijackthislog.

Regards DC

DC -
Here's today's excitment - the combofix seemed to work well - did not freeze or anything along that line. One note - Adaware (when I booted up this time) crashed more than once. Found that odd - it's not usually prone to bad behavior.

Here's the combofix log:

Hello again

Sorry for the delay

2. Next close all open windows apart from hjt and click fix checked and then exit the program.

3. Download this file to your desktop

Refering to the picture above, drag CFScript into ComboFix.exe.

This will start combofix. Let it run.

When finished, it shall produce a log for you at "C:\ComboFix.txt"

Note:
Do not mouseclick combofix's window whilst it's running. That may cause it to stall

4. Please click this link-->Jotti

When the jotti page has finished loading, click the Browse button and navigate to the following file and click Submit.

C:\WINDOWS\rnapxs\rnapxs.dat

Please post back the results of the scan in your next post along with the contents of "C:\ComboFix.txt" and a fresh Hijackthis log.

If Jotti is busy, try the same at Virustotal: http://www.virustotal.com/

Regards

DC

Although the detection rate afforded by the use of multiple antivirus engines is far superior to that offered by just one product, these results DO NOT guarantee the harmlessness of a file. Hey Therealtabby.

I am sorry for the delay. Demon Cleaner is currently unable to assist and your log seems to have fallen through the cracks.

In order to gain a deeper understanding as to the current state of your computer's health, please follow the steps below:

Please download Deckard's System Scanner (DSS) to your Desktop. Note: You must be logged onto an account with administrator privileges.
  • Close ALL applications and windows.
  • Double-click on dss.exe to run it, and follow the prompts.
  • When the scan is complete, two text files will open - main.txt <- this one will be maximized and extra.txt<-this one will be minimized
  • Copy (Ctrl+A then Ctrl+C) and paste (Ctrl+V) the contents of main.txt and the extra.txt to your post.
The logs can be quite lengthy..use two post if you need to get them all in.

And since I actually UNDERSTAND none of the contents of these scans, I am truly grateful for your assistance.

I do know that we get odd error messages in my daughters profile, my son's doesn't have this problem. I find in my profile (HP Owner - administrator) that my outlook is pathetically slow and there are curious flashes on the screen when I first log on - like something is running, but then goes away.

Many thanks for your attention to these items!

Hey Therealtabby,

Step #1

It is important that you use a software firewall, to prevent unauthorised traffic both out of and into your computer.
Your log doesn't show a firewall running. If you have disabled it, please re-enable it.
If you do not have a firewall installed, please download and install one of these excellent (and free) products:If you want to have a look at the user manuals for the above suggested programs, have a look at the following:If you do decide to install a third party firewall, make sure that the windows firewall is not running and if it is, deactivate it.

Step #2

Your Java is out of date. Older versions have vulnerabilities that malware can use to infect your system. A malicious site could render Java content under older, vulnerable versions of Sun's software if the user has not removed them. Please follow these steps to remove older version Java components and update:
  • Download the latest version of Java Runtime Environment (JRE) and save it to your desktop.
  • Scroll down to where it says "Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6u3...allows end-users to run Java applications".
  • Click the "Download" button to the right.
  • Read the License Agreement and then check the box that says: "Accept License Agreement".
  • The page will refresh.
  • Click on the link to download Windows Offline Installation and save the file to your desktop.
  • Close any programs you may have running - especially your web browser.
  • Go to Start > Settings > Control Panel, double-click on Add/Remove Programs and remove all older versions of Java.
  • Check (highlight) any item with Java Runtime Environment (JRE or J2SE) in the name.
  • Click the Remove or Change/Remove button.
  • Repeat as many times as necessary to remove each Java versions.
  • Reboot your computer once all Java components are removed.
  • Then from your desktop double-click on jre-6u3-windows-i586-p.exe to install the newest version.
Step #3

If you use P2P software (Azureus / Limewire), make sure you are careful about what you open and what P2P program you install. Malware is all over the P2P networks and the programs often come bundled with Adware and Spyware.

Further readings of interest in regards to the p2p "issue" are: http://pcpitstop.com/spycheck/p2p.asp and this: http://pcpitstop.com/spycheck/badtorrent.asp

Step #4

Click on start > run > and then paste the following into the "open" field: appwiz.cpl and press OK. From within Add or Remove Programs uninstall the following if they exist:
J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0
J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 10
J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 11
J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 6
Java™ 6 Update 2
Java™ SE Runtime Environment 6 Update 1

Step #5

Please do an online scan with Kaspersky Webscan (You need to use InternetExplorer or enable IEView in Firefox)

Click on Kaspersky Online Scanner

You will be promted to install an ActiveX component from Kaspersky, Click Yes.
  • The program will launch and then begin downloading the latest definition files:
  • Once the files have been downloaded click on NEXT
  • Now click on Scan Settings
  • In the scan settings make that the following are selected:
    • Scan using the following Anti-Virus database:
    Extended (if available otherwise Standard)
    • Scan Options:
    Scan Archives
    Scan Mail Bases
  • Click OK
  • Now under select a target to scan:Select My Computer
  • This will program will start and scan your system.
  • The scan will take a while so be patient and let it run.
  • Once the scan is complete it will display if your system has been infected.
    • Now click on the Save Report as button >> name it >> chose "Text file" in the Save as type dialogue
  • Save the file to your desktop.
  • Copy and paste that information in your next post.
Step #6

Please post back with a fresh HijackThis log and the log from the Kaspersky Onlinescan. Thanks.

Highness - sorry for not having this organized sooner - wild holiday season over here.
Here's the logs that you needed. Also, I have a router on this thing, and the gent that installed it assured me that it had a firewall in it. I'm not sure how firewalls work, but if you don't think the router is enough, then I will definitely study the topic more.
The Kaspersky file is a large one, so I've uploaded as an attachment
