Protecting A Wireless Network?

i want to protect my netgear 54 mbps adsl modem router, but i have no idea how to do it. I just want to make it so that when people try to connectto it it will ask them for a password, i have no idea why this is so hard but i just cant workout how, so if somebody could help out it would be great >.<
