Hi

I have followed to the best of my ability the instructions on the 'Preparation Guide to use before posting a HJT log'. In addition to the recommended spyware removers i have also run SpyHunter.

Every time i run Spybot search & destroy it finds various nasties which i remove (2search being one that sticks in my mind, although i have no idea what this is). However after re-booting these re appear when spybot S&D is re run.

I constantly get warnings from Windows Defender that i have Adware:Win32/Virtumonde.gen, but these warnings re appear after removing them with Windows Defender and rebooting.

When surfing around the net i constantly get re directed to similar pages. Eg when navigating to http://news.sky.com/skynews/home i will get directed to a page selling Skytv packages!! Then for example i might get endless, unstoppable pages popping up even though i have a pop-up blocker

I also get directed to www.007guard.com/404/, although my security settings doesnt allow this page to open. Is this part of my problem  :)

Anyway here is my HJT log, please can someone shed some light on what might be going on inside my PC.

Thanks, Gnash

Hello gnasher123,

Welcome to Bleeping Computer

We need to disable your Windows Defender Real-time Protection as it may interfere with the fixes that we need to make.
  • Open Windows Defender.
  • Click on Tools, General Settings.
  • Scroll down and uncheck Turn on real-time protection (recommended).
  • After you uncheck this, click on the Save button and close Windows Defender.
After all of the fixes are complete it is very important that you enable Real-time Protection again.

1. Download this file - combofix.exe
2. Double click combofix.exe & follow the prompts.
3. When finished, it will produce a log for you. Post that log in your next reply please, along with a new HijackThis log.

Note:
Do not mouseclick combofix's window while it's running. That may cause it to stall.

Thanks,
tea
Please make a donation so I can keep helping people just like you.
Every little bit helps! :)
You can even use your credit card! Thank you!

Hello,

We need to disable your Windows Defender Real-time Protection as it may interfere with the fixes that we need to make.
  • Open Windows Defender.
  • Click on Tools, General Settings.
  • Scroll down and uncheck Turn on real-time protection (recommended).
  • After you uncheck this, click on the Save button and close Windows Defender.
After all of the fixes are complete it is very important that you enable Real-time Protection again.

Please run HijackThis! and click "Scan." Place checks next to the following entries, if present:

O2 - BHO: (no name) - {7E853D72-626A-48EC-A868-BA8D5E23E045} - (no file)
O4 - Global Startup: Microsoft Office.lnk = C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office\OSA9.EXE
O24 - Desktop Component 0: (no name) - file:///C:/DOCUME~1/Jake/LOCALS~1/Temp/msoclip1/01/clip_image002.jpg
O24 - Desktop Component 1: (no name) - file:///C:/DOCUME~1/Jake/LOCALS~1/Temp/msoclip1/01/clip_image002.gif

Close all browsers and other windows except for HijackThis!, and click "Fix checked".

Go to start -> control panel -> Display properties -> Desktop -> Customize Desktop... -> Web tab, then uncheck and delete everything you find in there (except for "My current home page"),

Also remove the checkmark from the the Lock Desktop Items box if it is checked.
Apply.
Apply and Exit Display properties.

Reboot your computer.

Please download and run Bit Defender 8 online scanner
  • Install the program and then follow the prompts to download all available updates.
  • Select Antivirus and then click the Settings button. Click Default. Click Ok.
  • Select Local Drives and click Scan.
  • When the scan is complete save the log and post it back here in your next reply, along with a new HijackThis log.
How is it running now?

Thanks,
tea
Please make a donation so I can keep helping people just like you.
Every little bit helps! :)
You can even use your credit card! Thank you!

Hello,

Couple of things we need to take care of now :

You need to get an Anti Virus program on your computer. AVG, Avira OR Avast are good FREE antivirus.
Never install more than one antivirus scanner or firewall on your system! Several together can give you problems and decrease the reliability of it seriously!

Ewido is now AVG AntiSpyware, and has been for quite a while now. You need to uninstall Ewido and go get the latest from AVG here: http://free.grisoft.com/doc/5390/us/frt/0?prd=asf

Run scans with both and let me know if they find anything.

Thanks,
tea

Hi again.

The virus scan came up with C\WINDOWS\system32\iifffda.dll.vir which it deleted for me.

The AVG antispyware came up with a few cookies which i also applied the delete action it recommended.

This is the latest HJT log. The PC seems to be running abit quicker on startup.

Hello,

That log looks good.

Please delete ComboFix and its accompanying folder C:\Qoobox. Empty your Recycle bin and reboot your computer.

Let's see if we can add a bit of speed to your computer now :

Please run HijackThis! and click "Scan." Place checks next to the following entries, if present:

Hi again.

The PC runs well now - thank you. However on startup its pretty slow opening Internet Explorer pages (for the first minute or two) Is this because the AV scan starts/looks for updates on start up each time?

All the best Gnasher

Hello,

Yes, that probably has a lot to do with it.

If there are no further problems:

Below I have included a number of recommendations on how to protect your computer in order to prevent future malware infections. Please take these recommendations seriously! These few simple steps can stave off the vast majority of spyware problems.

Regularly go to http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com and download all the "critical updates" for Windows, including the latest version of Internet Explorer. This can patch many of the security holes through which attackers can gain access to your computer. You should also turn on the Windows automatic update feature.

It is very important to maintain your Firewall.
A tutorial on understanding and using firewalls may be found here.

In order to protect yourself against spyware, you should consider installing and running the following free programs:

SpywareBlaster
A tutorial on using SpywareBlaster to prevent spyware from ever installing on your computer may be found here.

SpywareGuard

IE/Spyad:
It places over 5000 malicious websites and domains in your IE's restricted zone.

Make sure to keep these programs up-to-date and to run them regularly, as this can prevent a great deal of spyware hassle.

* Avoid illegal sites, because that's where most malware is present.
* Don't click on links inside popups.
* Don't click on links in spam messages claiming to offer anti-spyware software; because most of these so called removers ARE spyware.
* Download free software only from sites you know and trust. A lot of free software can bundle other software, including spyware.

Please consider using an alternate browser. Mozilla's Firefox browser is fantastic; it is much more secure than Internet Explorer, immune to almost all known browser hijackers, and also has the best built-in popup blocker (as an added benefit!) that I have ever seen. If you are interested, Firefox may be downloaded from here:

Please make sure to run your antivirus software regularly, and to keep it up-to-date.

Take care!
