Posted 24 October 2007 - 10:20 AM

I was compromised by Vundo, who brought a bunch of nasty friends to my machine.
I think I have removed Vundo (using symantec's FixVundo, after VundoFix and VundoBeGone couldn't remove it).

I am still getting popups and have some leftover problems to remove. I am pretty sure I'm at least infected by w?auboot.

Could anyone help me clean up my machine.

Here is my HJT log:

Hello drewcarter,

Welcome to Bleeping Computer

I notice that you have Spybot's TeaTimer running. While this is normally a wonderful tool to protect against hijackers, it can also interfere with the fixes. So please disable TeaTimer by doing the following:
1) Run Spybot-S&D
2) Go to the Mode menu, and make sure "Advanced Mode" is selected
3) On the left hand side, choose Tools -> Resident
4) Uncheck "Resident TeaTimer" and OK any prompts

You can reenable TeaTimer once your system is clean.

I am pretty sure I'm at least infected by w?auboot.

That's PurityScan.

1. Download this file - combofix.exe
2. Double click combofix.exe & follow the prompts.
3. When finished, it will produce a log for you. Post that log in your next reply please, along with a new HijackThis log.

Note:
Do not mouseclick combofix's window while it's running. That may cause it to stall.

Thanks,
tea

Hi Teacup61

Thanks for helping me out on this.
I turned off the tea-timer.

I downloaded combofix, but could not get it to run.
I tried 3 times. At the screen saying it might take 10 minutes, or more, it hangs. I gave it 90 minutes, noted no processor activity, then killed the process.

Any ideas?

-Drew

Hi Drew,

Sometimes other protection programs interfere, so I want you to go offline, disable ALL your protection programs, then try it again. Just remember to reenable them before you come back online. Let me know how you come out. We can try other things if this doesn't work right now, but this is the best at removing what you have and I feel we have to try it.

Regards,
tea

Tea,

Sorry for the delay, but I've been struggling with shutting down my symantec AV processes.
I can't seem to kill the real time scanner process, which I think is preventing combofix from running.

Any thoughts here?

Drew

Uninstall it, then try. Offline, of course.

Tea,

OK, I'll work on uninstalling. However, I'm not sure where the install disk is stored, so I'll have to find that.
I'll get back to you asap.

Tea,

OK, I got Combofix.exe to run. I ran it in SafeMode, rather than uninstalling the Norton software.

Here is the Combofix.exe log, followed by my HJT log.

Hello,

I really need that to be run in normal mode, if at all possible. So let's do this :

Please run HijackThis! and click "Scan." Place checks next to the following entries, if present:

O2 - BHO: (no name) - {02478D38-C3F9-4efb-9B51-7695ECA05670} - (no file)
O2 - BHO: (no name) - {29255082-A558-4A12-9284-46FF35FA0C15} - (no file)
O2 - BHO: (no name) - {7E853D72-626A-48EC-A868-BA8D5E23E045} - (no file)
O2 - BHO: (no name) - {CEADF51C-D654-41FA-9CAF-FE3A0AAF53F7} - C:\WINDOWS\system32\awtqn.dll (file missing)
O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [Tair] "\\Opera-fs1\rd_folders\dcarter\MYDOCU~1\RACLE~1\winlogon.exe" -vt ndrv
O23 - Service: VundoFix Service (VundoFixSvc) - Atribune.org - C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\VundoFixSVC.exe

Close all browsers and other windows except for HijackThis!, and click "Fix checked".

Now please try to run ComboFix, in normal mode, and post the report. Let me know how you come out.

Thanks,
tea

Tea,

Here is the new combofix log and HJT following:
Unfortunately, I cannot run combofix in normal mode. I know this causes a problem, but I can't seem to get around it.
Hopefully it's not a deal-killer.

Please download and run Bit Defender 8 online scanner
  • Install the program and then follow the prompts to download all available updates.
  • Select Antivirus and then click the Settings button. Click Default. Click Ok.
  • Select Local Drives and click Scan.
  • When the scan is complete save the log and post it back here in your next reply.

  • Click the Remove or Change/Remove button.
  • Repeat as many times as necessary to remove each Java version.
  • Reboot your computer once all Java components are removed.
  • Then from your desktop double-click on jre-6-windows-i586.exe to install the newest version.
