i have an hp compaq nx 7400 laptop
everything started to go wrong
so i thought the best way out of all the problems
was that i should format and re-install
once i formated the hard drive
i tried to reinstall windows but within 2 or 3 mins
of starting installation i get the blue screen of death.
saying that the installation has been stopped
to prevent damage to your computer.
i have not changed a thing with the computer as it was running
before i formated
the disc is not damaged because i tried the xp disc
on another machine and that installed perfectly fine.
s**t was has gone wrong

How about some details on what "everything" means?

Did you run a check of the hard drive?

oh sorry
when i said everything was going wrong i meant
that the computer really slowed down a lot
and it took ages to gointo internet xplorer to surf the net.
the actual computer worked fine apart from the above problems
so i formated hard drive and inserted windows xp pro disc (which is a legit disc)
not a copy.
then within a couple of minutes of starting to install
got blue screen of death
now the operating system will not load onto this laptop
i format again and still same result
thanks for your help

I had a very similar problem after formatting my hard drive on a Samsung laptop; I would get 1 or sometimes 2 minutes into the installation and the computer would suddenly switch off, it kept happening and was driving me nuts. Sometimes I would get a brief BSoD just before hand.

The cure was obscure but very simple:

Near the beginning of the XP install when you are prompted to press F6 to install third party drivers (or something like that) press F7 instead.

You won't get any visual confirmation but this will run Setup without Advanced Configuration and Power Interface (ACPI) which appears not to work correctly with many BIOS versions.

This very simple fix cured what had been an infuriating and seemingly unresolvable problem for me.

I have the same laptop. This has a recovery partition. Have you read your manual as to how to recover your PC from this partition??

I did a complete re-format of the hard drive and merged all the partitions into one large one, perhaps a little foolish but I had the CDs that came with the system and was feeling brave at the time!

I have a few nagging doubts now as there are some odd things happened since I re-formatted (like a phantom Floppy disk drive in device manager and power options disappearing).

Oh well - you live and learn I guess....
