Hotmail does not recognise my pasword (tried changing the password, it works on other PCs).

Babycentre.co.uk - lets us log in, but then on sending us to our personalised page, it sends us to the home page and asks us to log in again.

www.diy.com - similar to babycentre, trying to use the kitchen planner, I log on, it accepts, but then tells me I have been timed out because of inactivity, and that I need to log on again.

www.babyhawk.com - lets us design our own product, but when we try to save it it sends us to an empty shopping cart.

zonealarm - insists that cookies need to be enabled but I'm sure they are!

Even this site had trouble recongising that I'm logging in/logged in already!

Sites that would normally "remember" us and log us in automatically, are not doing this (hotmail and babycentre for example).

None of these problems happen on my pc at work!

I've been through all the advised downloads, updates and scans, no improvement, so here is my HJT log:

Hi furry76,

Welcome to BleepingComputer Forums and thanks again for your patience.

Thanks very much for any help!

You're very welcome.

1.

Problems Logging In To Hotmail And Others, Password not recognised, or is accepted but then I am logged out...

Sites that would normally "remember" us and log us in automatically, are not doing this (hotmail and babycentre for example).

None of these problems happen on my pc at work!

It may be a router problem or a problem with your ISP or ..... but to begin with let's see if there's any malware involved

2. I notice from your log that you have running two different firewalls (McAfee and Sygate Personal Firewall) with Auto-protect enabled. Rather than giving you extra protection, this can actually give problems because of incompatibility issues, can even cause BSODs and decrease reliability seriously!

Therefor I would strongly advise you to only have one firewall with the Auto-Protect feature running at any one time!
Uninstall the other through the Add or Remove Programs option in Control Panel.

3. Download Deckard's System Scanner and save it to your Desktop.

* Double click dss.exe and follow the prompts.
* When finished, it will produce a log for you.
* Post the contents of that log in your next reply.
* Using Windows Explorer (to get there right-click your Start button and go to "Explore"), navigate to the C:\Deckard\System Scanner folder. You will find two logs in the folder, main.txt and extra.txt.
* Open the main.txt log in Notepad
* Also Copy and Paste its contents in a reply.

4. Run the F-Secure Online Scanner
Note: This Scanner is for Internet Explorer Only!
Follow the Instruction here for installation.
Accept the License Agreement.
Once the ActiveX installs,Click Full System Scan
Once the download completes, the scan will begin automatically.
The scan will take some time to finish, so please be patient.
When the scan completes, click the Automatic cleaning (recommended) button.
Click the Show Report button and Copy&Paste the entire report in your next reply.

Please post the F-Secure log along with the DSS main/extra logs.

OK, I've removed Sygate, and Broadband Medic (a "help" program from my old broadband provider, not needed any more).

Here is the main.txt log from DSS:

Hi furry76,

1. To begin with let's take a closer look at some programmes you have installed:

> Some versions of LimewireLimewire come bundled with unwanted programs and malware, some don't and this changes all the time. Limewire 4.14.10 may be OK. It's your choice.

Just be aware that, even "clean" P2P program use is high risk:

http://www.us-cert.gov/cas/tips/ST05-007.html
http://forums.spybot.info/showthread.php?t=282

You may have Limewire set up more securely, but pay particular attention to susceptibility to attack in those articles. I see many users with folders chock full of malware after using "clean" versions of Limewire.

> If you installed these Poker programs and wish to use them then its fine to ignore. If you didn't install them intentionally then the entries can be fixed using HijackThis, that is checkmark them. These are optional fixes because in some cases, the programs are supported by malware and get installed without consent.

It's up to you to decide to remove them.

Okay click on Start, Settings, Control Panel and double-click on Add or Remove Programs. From within Add or Remove Programs uninstall the following programs:

Java 2 Runtime Environment, SE v1.4.2_01
Java 2 Runtime Environment, SE v1.4.2_03

.... and if you have decided to remove them remove the following programmes as well if listed:

LimeWire 4.14.10
Paradise Poker
PartyPoker
PacificPoker

2. Please click this link-->Jotti

When the jotti page has finished loading, click the browse button and navigate to the files listed below in bold, then click Submit. You will only be able to have one file scanned at a time.

c:\windows\system32\drivers\vim.sys

Please post back the results of the scan in your next post.

If Jotti is busy, try the same at Virustotal: http://www.virustotal.com/

3. Please disable SuperAntispyware since it may interfere with the fixes we are going to make.

Right-click on the shortcut from the
system tray, choose View Control Center (preferences/options), on the General and Startup tab, uncheck, Start SUPERAntispyware when Windows starts, click Close to exit.

You may enable it again once you're clean; I will let you know.

4. Run HijackThis, click Scan and checkmark the following entries:

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [KernelFaultCheck] %systemroot%\system32\dumprep 0 -k

and if you decided to remove them, checkmark these entries as well:

O4 - Startup: LimeWire On Startup.lnk = C:\Program Files\LimeWire\LimeWire.exe
O9 - Extra button: PartyPoker.com - {B7FE5D70-9AA2-40F1-9C6B-12A255F085E1} - C:\Program Files\PartyPoker\PartyPoker.exe (file missing)
O9 - Extra 'Tools' menuitem: PartyPoker.com - {B7FE5D70-9AA2-40F1-9C6B-12A255F085E1} - C:\Program Files\PartyPoker\PartyPoker.exe (file missing)

Close all browsers and windows, except for HijackThis and click the Fix Checked button; close HijackThis!

5. If you decided to remove them, using Windows Explorer (to get there right-click your Start button and go to "Explore"), please delete the following folders in bold if they exist:

C:\Program Files\LimeWire
C:\Program Files\PartyPoker
C:\Program Files\PacificPoker
C:\PROGRA~1\PARADI~1<< Folders begins with PARADI and probably look like ParadisePoker

6. Download ATF Cleaner by Atribune.

Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
Under Main choose: Select All
Click the Empty Selected button.

If you use Firefox browserClick Firefox at the top and choose: Select All
Click the Empty Selected button.
NOTE: If you would like to keep your saved passwords, please click No at the prompt.
If you use Opera browserClick Opera at the top and choose: Select All
Click the Empty Selected button.
NOTE: If you would like to keep your saved passwords, please click No at the prompt.
Click Exit on the Main menu to close the program.
For Technical Support, double-click the e-mail address located at the bottom of each menu.

Please reboot and post a fresh HijackThis log for review and the information on the file. How are things running now, any improvement?

Hi Falu

OK, I have been through your post, and I have:

1. Removed the two java programs, removed limewire, removed Paradise Poker and Party Poker (I want Pacific poker)

2. Used Jotti on vim.sys, here are the results:

Service load: 0% 100%

File: vim.sys
Status: OK(Note: this file has been scanned before. Therefore, this file's scan results will not be stored in the database)
MD5: 77ebf3e9386daa51551af429052d88d0
Packers detected: -
Bit9 reports: No threat detected (more info)

3. Disabled superantispyware on startup

4. Used HJT to fix the entries as suggested (the O4 Limewire entry wasn't there, I guess because it had been succuessfully removed via the control panel).

5. Removed the program files as suggested

6. Downloaded and used ATF Cleaner

Things are definitely running faster now on startup, which is a great help, thanks

The password issue is still there, which I guess you were expecting anyway! Here is my latest HJT log:

Hi furry76,

1.

I want Pacific poker

Not a good idea!!!

2.

Things are definitely running faster now on startup,

That's good to hear. The other good news is that your log looks clean as well.

The password issue is still there, which I guess you were expecting anyway!

The problem could have gone away because malware can cause problems like yours. But let's try some other options:

3. Do you get the same errors when you switch to another browser? Please let me know.

4. Start->Run, copy paste the following line into the open textbox and click OK:

notepad %windir%\system32\drivers\etc\hosts

A textfile will open. Copy/paste the contents into your reply.

5. Please go to Start -> Run -> cmd and press Enter. At the command prompt type sfc /scannow, making sure to put a space between the "c" and the slash, and then press Enter. This will run the System File Checker. Follow the prompts, and insert your Windows installation CD if requested. Then please restart your computer.

6. In your HijackThis, 023-section, you see a lot of services related to McAfee products which may e.g. interfere with passwords. You should check the related helpfiles or contact McAfee or the McAfee support forum and ask for help.

7. A strange question, I know but since computers are strange things I'll ask anyway: you have Starforce drivers installed which are known to cause system instability . Problems didn't start after you installed them, did they?

Please post the contents of the hostsfile and teh information asked.

Hi Falu

Here goes:

1. Hmm, I've had Pacific Poker for ages now. I'll think about getting rid though, as I don't use it as often as I used to...

3. I've tried using Mozilla Firefox - same problems

4. Here's the text file:

# Copyright © 1993-1999 Microsoft Corp.
#
# This is a sample HOSTS file used by Microsoft TCP/IP for Windows.
#
# This file contains the mappings of IP addresses to host names. Each
# entry should be kept on an individual line. The IP address should
# be placed in the first column followed by the corresponding host name.
# The IP address and the host name should be separated by at least one
# space.
#
# Additionally, comments (such as these) may be inserted on individual
# lines or following the machine name denoted by a '#' symbol.
#
# For example:
#
# 102.54.94.97 rhino.acme.com # source server
# 38.25.63.10 x.acme.com # x client host

127.0.0.1 localhost

5. I ran the cfc /scannow, it took quite q while, then just seemed to finish but didn't tell me anything...? (It certainly didn't ask me for my install cd!)

6. I'll look into the mcafee thing. (I noticed it was doing stuff on startup that I can do manually, which should help speed things up (even though they are quicker than before your help, things are still quite low!).)

7. I haven't knowingly installed starforce drivers - I need to confess that I don't know what they are! How would they have been installed? Could they be malicious? (I originally went to a past restore point, before these troubles, which might have got round this issue anyway? Although i know restore points aren't a great help!)

Any mor eideas on the password tyhing or on speeding things up? Thanks yet again for all of this, it is extremely helpful!

Hi furry76,

1.

6. I'll look into the mcafee thing.

Wouldn't be surprised if that had to do with it.

R0 prohlp02 (StarForce Protection Helper Driver v2) - c:\windows\system32\drivers\prohlp02.sys
R0 sfhlp01 (StarForce Protection Helper Driver) - c:\windows\system32\drivers\sfhlp01.sys
R1 prodrv06 (StarForce Protection Environment Driver v6) - c:\windows\system32\drivers\prodrv06.sys

2.

I haven't knowingly installed starforce drivers - I need to confess that I don't know what they are! How would they have been installed? Could they be malicious?

Using the link I provided:

What is Starforce?

Starforce is a software copy protection tool installed by PC game publishers, which is designed to prevent the casual copying of retail CDROM applications. It installs as a hidden device driver, without the end-user's knowledge or consent.

It's not malicious but can cause problems as you can reda in the link provided.

3.

(even though they are quicker than before your help, things are still quite low!).)

Check Help! My computer is slow! and follow all the instructions given.

4.

I originally went to a past restore point, before these troubles, which might have got round this issue anyway? Although i know restore points aren't a great help!)

If I understand well you already did a system restore to a last known good configuration? If not you could try that.

Click Start > All Programs > Accessories > System Tools, and then click System Restore.* On the Welcome screen, click Restore my computer to an earlier time, and then click Next.
* On the Select a Restore Point page, select the date from the calendar that shows the point you'd like to restore to : click Next.
* On the Confirm Restore Point Selection page, verify that the correct restore point is chosen, and then close any open programs.
* Click Next if you are ready to proceed or click Back to change the restore point.

Any more ideas on the password tyhing or on speeding things up?

Actually I'm running out of ideas but since it isn't a malware problem I suggest you also ask around at the Software and Hardware Subforums. Please refer to this thread.

Did this help?
