Well, this post has been up for two weeks now...

Thanks for helping, but I'll go see if another forum can actually help me or something ;__;

D:

Whenever I try to open the log itself on notepad or anything, it says:

Windows cannot access the specified device, path, or file. You may not have the appropriate permissions to access the item.

Basically, it says the same exact thing for system security, add or remove programs, or even notepad wordpad itself...

Basically I can't access anything but AIM or Firefox. D:

I've looked into the problem and people say "Turn off the security module" or something. However, I have no idea how to do this because to do that I'd have to access something through control panel...

And I can't access anything through control panel. D:

To sum it all up: I can't post the HijackThis Log D:

Hi Pandetech,

Welcome to BleepingComputer Forums.

Okay I think there's something wrong with the way your permissions are set. Follow te instructions given in these two links, to begin with 1. If they don't work check link 2.

1. How to take ownership of a file or folder in Windows XP

2. Solving setup errors by using the SubInACL tool to repair file and registry permissions

Hopefully you're able to post a fresh HijackThis log now.

Did another full system restore xD

I think I forgot to mention Norton Antivirus has expired, and some annoying window keeps coming up. It tells me I have a virus, but my computer runs smoothly. I'll be able to purchase it again soon. ;__; I usually drag the message to the bottom of the screen so I can't see it.

Have fun! >__>

Hi Pandetech,

1.

I think I forgot to mention Norton Antivirus has expired,

You mean Norton Internet Security, right? Uninstall any AV program you don't use anymore completely and than install another one.

There are some very good and for free antivirus programmes:

AVG and
AntiVir Personal Edition and
Avast!

How about a firewall? I don't see one running!!

For a tutorial on Firewalls, click: Understanding and Using Firewalls! It also has a list of links for popular and free firewalls.

Don't run more than one of each at a time , that is with real-time protection enabled, since that can actually give problems because of incompatibility issues, BSODs and decrease reliability seriously!

2. Run HijackThis, click Scan and checkmark the following entries:

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [AlcxMonitor] ALCXMNTR.EXE

Close all browsers and windows, except for HijackThis and click the Fix Checked button; close HijackThis!

3. Using Windows Explorer (to get there right-click your Start button and go to "Explore"), please delete the following file in bold if it still exists:

C:\WINDOWS\ALCXMNTR.EXE

4. Download ATF Cleaner by Atribune.

Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
Under Main choose: Select All
Click the Empty Selected button.

If you use Firefox browserClick Firefox at the top and choose: Select All
Click the Empty Selected button.
NOTE: If you would like to keep your saved passwords, please click No at the prompt.
If you use Opera browserClick Opera at the top and choose: Select All
Click the Empty Selected button.
NOTE: If you would like to keep your saved passwords, please click No at the prompt.
Click Exit on the Main menu to close the program.
For Technical Support, double-click the e-mail address located at the bottom of each menu.

5. You're using an outdated version of Java (latest one is Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6u3). Older versions have vulnerabilities that malware can use to infect your system. Please update and remove the older versions. Do the following:
  • Go to Start > Control Panel double-click on the Software icon > add/remove programs.
  • Search in the list for all previous installed versions of Java. (J2SE Runtime Environment.... )

It should have next icon next to it: Posted Image
    Select it and click Remove.
  • Then Download and install the newest version from here:

    Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6u3
6. Very Important! Temporarily disable your anti-virus, script blocking and any anti-malware real-time protection before performing a scan. They can interfere with ComboFix or remove some of its embedded files which may cause "unpredictable results".
Click on this link to see a list of programs that should be disabled. The list is not all inclusive. If yours is not listed and you don't know how to disable it, please ask.

7. Download Combofix to your desktop.
Doubleclick combo.exe to launch the application.
Follow the prompts that will be displayed on the screen.
Don't click on the window while the fix is running, because that will cause your system to hang.
When finished, it should produce a log, combofix.txt.
Post this log in your next reply.

Please post the combofix.txt along with a fresh HijackThis log and let me know if you have any complaints.

Okay, a lot of stuff went wrong, lulz.

1.) My permissions went poop again. I had first performed a small system restore in order to be able to access these multiple files (including everything in my control panel). This did not help at all. So, I went to the post where you had addressed the issue.

1. How to take ownership of a file or folder in Windows XP - Did not work because when I click "Properties", the "Security" tab does not show up at all. Only General, Shortcut, and Compatibility.

2. Solving setup errors by using the SubInACL tool to repair file and registry permissions - Didn't work because once I downloaded SubInACL, I wasn't able to access it because I didn't have permission. >.<

2.) I managed to delete that file in bold using Hijackthis. I don't have windows explorer, but I went on documents and performed a search for that file. Indeed, it was there with another file. I deleted the .EXE file but the other one I could not. I tried deleting it but the following message came up:

Cannot delete ALCXMNTR: Access is denied.

Make sure the disk is not full or write-protected and that the file is not currently in use.

3.) I do not have permission to use ATF Cleaner. By the way, this account has administrative privileges.

4.) I can't get to Add or Remove programs because I don't have permission.

I did fix this problem before with system restore, however it had cleared all my files etc.

Any way at all I can fix this without doing that huge system restore all over again?

Hi Pandetech,

Okay, a lot of stuff went wrong,

I know, actually I knew but, okay let's try and solve the problem.

Click HERE to download FindAWF.exe and save it to your desktop.
Double-click on the FindAWF.exe file to run it.
It will open a command prompt and ask you to "Press any key to continue".
You will be presented with a Menu.
Type 1, then press Enter.
FindAWF tool will begin scanning.
It may take a few minutes to complete so be patient.
When the scan is finished, a text file in notepad called AWF.txt will automatically open.
Return to this thread and copy and paste the contents of the AWF.txt file in your next reply.

Hi Pandetech,

did yet ANOTHER system restore, XD

Why? It's better to follow instructions.

You have a downloader trojan called Downloader.Agent.awf or Downloader.Agent.ayy. This trojan replaces legitimate files that are common on most computers with an infected file. It then moves the legitimate file to a "bak" or backup folder. Please follow steps below:

Copy the file paths in quote below to the clipboard, highlight all of them right-click and choose copy, or highlight them and press Ctrl+C:

"C:\hp\KBD\bak\KBD.EXE"
"C:\Program Files\iTunes\bak\iTunesHelper.exe"
"C:\Program Files\Verizon\bak\McciTrayApp.exe"
"C:\WINDOWS\SMINST\bak\RECGUARD.EXE"
"C:\WINDOWS\system\bak\hpsysdrv.exe"
"C:\Program Files\HP\HP Software Update\bak\HPWuSchd2.exe"
"C:\Program Files\Common Files\Real\Update_OB\bak\realsched.exe"
"C:\Program Files\Google\GoogleToolbarNotifier\1.2.1128.5462\bak\GoogleToolbarNotifier.exe"
C:\Program Files\Java\jre1.6.0_02\bin\bak\jusched.exe"

Double-click on the FindAWF.exe file to run it.
It will open a command prompt and ask you to "Press any key to continue".
You will be presented with a Menu.
Type 2, then press Enter.
Press any key to continue.
A Notepad document files.txt will appear with instructions to click below the line and paste the list of files to be restored.
Right click below the line and paste the list of files that were copied to the clipboard (Ctrl+V).
Close Notepad and you will receive prompt to save the changes, click Yes.
The program will proceed with working.
It may take a few minutes to complete so be patient.
When the scan is finished, it will open a text file in notepad called AWF.txt.
Return to this thread and copy and paste the contents of the AWF.txt file in your next reply.

Hi Pandetech,

Copy the paths in quote below to the clipboard, highlight all of them right-click and choose copy, or highlight them and press Ctrl+C:

Double-click on the FindAWF.exe file to run it.
It will open a command prompt and ask you to "Press any key to continue".
You will be presented with a Menu.
Type 3, then press Enter.
Press any key to continue.
A Notepad document folders.txt will appear with instructions to click below the line and paste the list of folders to be removed.
Right click below the line and paste the list of paths that were copied to the clipboard (Ctrl+V).
Close Notepad and you will receive prompt to save the changes, click Yes.
The program will proceed with working.
It may take a few minutes to complete so be patient.
When the scan is finished, it will open a text file in notepad called AWF.txt.
Return to this thread and copy and paste the contents of the AWF.txt file in your next reply along with a fresh HijackThis log..
