I am running Windows XP SP2 with IE7 fully updated
Systen Restore disabled
Instructions followed several times except for the online tools of step 5 that could not be run due to the flood of browsers being launched as soon as connection is made to network.
Tools used and results:
Temp files temporary internet and temp files: OK
AVG virus: scanned until comes up clean
Lavasoft Adaware SE Professional with updates runs clean
Symantec AntiVirus 10.1.6.6000 Corporate Edition with updates reports: Adware.Purityscan, partially cleaned, file logonui.exe, ?pppatch in windows\system32
none of the Registry Keys to remove as recommed by Symantec were found
Spybot with updates runs clean

When connected to network, multiple IE browser windows are launched. About 50 are launched before the computer becomes unresponsive with mouse not able to move cursor. About two thirds are blank with headers stating pop-ups were blocked.
Two or three Symantec windows also popup reporting Adware.Purityscan found and partially cleaned.
Upon reboot into safe mode (off-line) Spybot scan now reports "TagASaurus" and "Virtumonde" found, repaired these.

Stinger scan comes up clean

Here is the HJT log, rerun and reposted after finding a comment (in misplaced HJT log sub forum) that it should have been run in normal mode instead:

Welcome to the BleepingComputer HijackThis Logs and Analysis forum Kvan
My name is Richie and i'll be helping you to fix your problems.

Viewpoint Manager is considered as foistware instead of malware since it is installed without users approval but doesn't spy or do anything "bad".
This changed in 2006,read this article:
http://www.clickz.com/news/article.php/3561546

You are well advised to remove the program now.
Go to Start > Settings > Control Panel > Add/Remove Programs and remove the following programs if present, then restart your pc:
Viewpoint
Viewpoint Manager
Viewpoint Media Player

If you have previously downloaded ComboFix,please delete that version now.
Now download Combofix and save to your desktop:
Note:
It is important that it is saved directly to your desktop

Close any open browsers.
Double click on combofix.exe and follow the prompts.
When it's finished it will produce a log.
Post the entire contents of C:\ComboFix.txt into your next reply.
Note:
Do not mouseclick combofix's window while it's running.
That may cause the program to freeze/hang.

Do NOT post the ComboFix-quarantined-files.txt unless I ask.

Also post a new Hijackthis log please.

Thanks Richie, especially for your prompt response.

I really consider this issue to be a DoS (Denial of Service) attack, since the box becomes totally useable within minutes of connecting to the network.

Here is what I have done so far based on your advice, all still off-line:

Removed
Viewpoint Manager
Viewpoint Media Player

Cleaned again with Spybot, TagASaurus and Virtumonde found and cleaned (again)
Multiple popups regarding attempts at Registry changes, changes allowed for each (screen snaps available)

Popup from Windows Securiy alert regarding "BackWeb-1940576"
answered "Ask me later" (screen snaps available)

Popup from Spybot regarding "System Startup Global entry" Change: Value detected (screen snaps available)

After reboot, while attempting to turn off Spybot, got the Windows Securiy alert regarding "BackWeb-1940576" again, answered Unblock

In Spybot settings => settings, set scan priority to Idle and System Strat to No Automation

Rebooted and ran ComboFix again, completed w/o interuptions from popups, log below

Ran HLT, log below.

It feels like we are making good progress. Please take a peak and let me know where we go from here.

Thanks again,

KVan

Thanks Richie, especially for your prompt response.

I really consider this issue to be a DoS (Denial of Service) attack, since the box becomes totally unuseable within minutes of connecting to the network.

KVan

Copy and paste ALL the following text in the Quote box below into Notepad.
Click on File(in the menu at the top)>Save as../Save as Type: 'All Files' /File name: CFScript to your desktop.

File::
C:\WINDOWS\system32\gjllm.ini2
Folder::
C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Viewpoint
C:\Program Files\Common Files\ofwi
Registry::
[-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\~\Browser Helper Objects\{121C24B9-CCC3-425C-A174-4924136400AA}]
[-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\~\Browser Helper Objects\{991EF04C-93CF-469b-A2BE-CC1B3347566F}]
[-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\~\Browser Helper Objects\{A91E7838-EDCB-4A48-8188-F4CA212820BD}]
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run]
"AlcxMonitor"=-
"nowcbewA"=-

Now drag then drop the CFScript file onto ComboFix.exe as seen in the image below.

This will start ComboFix again.
After reboot, (in case it asks to reboot), post the contents of Combofix.txt in your next reply along with a new HijackThis log.

It does not appear that my last attempt at a reply made it. I ran CF with the script and posted it along with an HJT log, but don't see it on the thread. Let me know if I should re-post the logs.

Ran the ComboFix with the script.
ComboFix reported the System Startup global entry values deleted, Browser Help Object key deleted then the startup value added entry nowcbewA. I answered all prompts with ‘Allow change’ since it all appears consistent with the script.

Below are the ComboFix log when run with the CF script, and the HJT log run after CF without a reboot:

So, where do we go from here, oh wise assassin?

Thanks again for the help.

Kvan

Please disable Spybot S&D’s protection,or it will interfere.

Click on the 'System Startup' icon.

If it is, right click it and choose 'exit Spybot-S&D Resident'.
Reboot the computer.
If you find you're experiencing problems disabling Spybot's Tea-Timer,follow the info in the link below:
http://www.russelltexas.com/malware/teatimer.htm

Progress:

Disable of Spybot S&D’s protection: Successful

OTMoveIt downloaded, installed and run using the recommended file sets, Log below.

Downloaded, and updated 'SuperAntiSpyware Home Edition Free Version'. Note that this required connecting to the internet, NIC enabled for less than 1 minute to perform the download.

Used HJT to fix:
O2 - BHO: Yahoo! Toolbar Helper - {02478D38-C3F9-4efb-9B51-7695ECA05670} - C:\Program Files\Yahoo!\companion\Installs\cpn\yt.dll (file missing)
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [nowcbewA] C:\WINDOWS\nowcbewA.exe

Started SuperAntiSpyware and performed complete scan, Log below.

A reboot was performed as require by SAS

After reboot, a "Windows Security Alert" window popped with Name: BackWeb - 1940576; wanting me to select "Keep Blocking / Unblock / Ask me later"

I have paused to update this post to ask how this should be answered. Please advise.

Kurt

Previous Posting:
After reboot, a "Windows Security Alert" window popped with Name: BackWeb - 1940576;
wanting me to select "Keep Blocking / Unblock / Ask me later"

I have paused to update this post to ask how this should be answered. Please advise.[/indent]

I selected 'Ask me later' and proceeded.

I rebooted and ran SuperAntiSpyware, log below, it came up clean, log below.

Next step was to run HJT, log below

I am working on reconfiguring my home network to isolate this box before I attempt to connect to the internet without threat to my Windows Workgroup, possibly using a VPN. Any thoughts?

Unless I hear from you otherwise, I will then attempt to connect.

I could use some guidance is selecting which combination of tools mentioned in this thread I should use to protect against malware, adware and foistware. I expect that there is significant overlap in functionality, so I want to get the best protection with consideration for the resource usage of this computer.

Regarding a firewall, perhaps you can recomend one that would be particularly well suited to the these types of applications used.

Thanks again for the help,

Kvan

After reboot, a "Windows Security Alert" window popped with Name: BackWeb - 1940576;
wanting me to select "Keep Blocking / Unblock / Ask me later"

You should unblock it.
*Note*
BackWeb-1940576.exe

Messaging service that automatically sends you support information, tips, ideas, and special offers from HP and our partners, especially designed for HP and Compaq desktop computer owner.

Please download DrWeb-CureIt & save it to your desktop. DO NOT perform a scan yet.

You should copy/print the following because you need to be in Safe Mode from here on.

Reboot your computer into SAFE MODE using the F8 method.
To do this, restart your computer and after hearing your computer beep once during startup (but before the Windows icon appears) press the F8 key repeatedly.
A menu will appear with several options.
Use the arrow keys on your keyboard to navigate and select the option to run Windows in "Safe Mode".

Scan with DrWeb-CureIt as follows:
* Double-click on drweb-cureit.exe to start the program. An "Express Scan of your PC" notice will appear.
* Under "Start the Express Scan Now", Click "OK" to start. This is a short scan that will scan the files currently running in memory and when something is found, click the Yes button when it asks you if you want to cure it.
* Once the short scan has finished, Click Options > Change settings
* Choose the "Scan tab" and UNcheck "Heuristic analysis"
* Back at the main window, click "Select drives" (a red dot will show which drives have been chosen)
* Then click the "Start/Stop Scanning" button (green arrow on the right) and the scan will start.
* When done, a message will be displayed at the bottom advising if any viruses were found.
* Click "Yes to all" if it asks if you want to cure/move the file.
* When the scan has finished, look if you can see the icon next to the files found. If so, click it, then click the next icon right below and select "Move incurable".
(This will move it to the C:\Documents and Settings\userprofile\DoctorWeb\Quarantine folder if it can't be cured)
* Next, in the Dr.Web CureIt menu on top, click file and choose save report list.
* Save the DrWeb.csv report to your desktop.
* Exit Dr.Web Cureit when done.
* Important! Reboot your computer because it could be possible that files in use will be moved/deleted during reboot.
* After reboot, post the contents of the log from Dr.Web in your next reply. (You can use Notepad to open the DrWeb.cvs report)

Please run the F-Secure online virus/spyware scan using Internet Explorer:
http://support.f-secure.com/enu/home/ols.shtml
Follow the directions in the F-Secure page for proper Installation.
Accept the License Agreement.
Once the ActiveX installs,Click ‘Custom Scan’ and be sure the following are checked:
1.Scan whole System
2.Scan all files
3.Scan whole system for rootkits
4.Scan whole system for spyware
5.Scan inside archives
6.Use advanced heuristics
Once the download completes, the scan will begin automatically.
The scan will take some time to finish,so please be patient.
When the scan completes, click the ‘I want to decide item by item’ button.
For each item found,Select ‘Disinfect’ and click ‘Next’.
Click the ‘Show Report’ button, then copy and paste the entire report into your next reply.
