My wife's computer, running XP, acquired malware that repeatedly produced a popup "warning" her tha thewr system was making unauthorized copies of the registry files (something like that, anyway) and trying to direct her to a spyware removal download website. I ran ad-aware, spybot, and Asquared on her computer, and while the popups have stopped, neither Firefox nor IE will connect to the internet despite her computer being connected to the wireless network in our home (my computer works fine using the same network). I wonder whether I or the software might have deleted something important, or if this is another manifestation of the malware. Thanks in advance for any advice you have. The HJT log is pasted below:

Hello dancinpnts,

Welcome to Bleeping Computer

Download SDFix and save it to your Desktop.

Double click SDFix.exe and it will extract the files to %systemdrive%
(Drive that contains the Windows Directory, typically C:\SDFix)

Please then reboot your computer in Safe Mode by doing the following :
  • Restart your computer
  • After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, tap the F8 key continually;
  • Instead of Windows loading as normal, the Advanced Options Menu should appear;
  • Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode, then press Enter.
  • Choose your usual account.
  • Open the extracted SDFix folder and double click RunThis.bat to start the script.
  • Type Y to begin the cleanup process.
  • It will remove any Trojan Services and Registry Entries that it finds then prompt you to press any key to Reboot.
  • Press any Key and it will restart the PC.
  • When the PC restarts the Fixtool will run again and complete the removal process then display Finished, press any key to end the script and load your desktop icons.
  • Once the desktop icons load the SDFix report will open on screen and also save into the SDFix folder as Report.txt
(Report.txt will also be copied to Clipboard ready for posting back on the forum).
  • Finally paste the contents of the Report.txt back on the forum with a new HijackThis log

Thanks,
tea

Hello,

Still some nasties there.

Please download and run Bit Defender 8 online scanner
  • Install the program and then follow the prompts to download all available updates.
  • Select Antivirus and then click the Settings button. Click Default. Click Ok.
  • Select Local Drives and click Scan.
  • When the scan is complete save the log and post it back here in your next reply.
Please also post a new HijackThis log and let me know how it's running now.

Thanks,
tea

Hello,

1. Download this file - combofix.exe
2. Double click combofix.exe & follow the prompts.
3. When finished, it will produce a log for you. Post that log in your next reply please, along with a new HijackThis log.

Note:
Do not mouseclick combofix's window while it's running. That may cause it to stall.

Thanks,
tea

Hello, tea

The combofix program seems to be hanging up. 45 minutes of it showing a Windows Installer window with the message "Canceling...."
I made sure not to click on anything, except when a window popped up saying that the virtual memory needing to be increased. I clicked "ok" after 10 minutes or so.

Also, the problems seem to be spreading on the computer; Microsoft Word is now periodically crashing.

Hello,

Okay, let's see what this shows, and we'll start ripping this stuff out bit by bit if we have to.

Download Silent Runners.zip and extract it to a new folder on your Desktop.
  • Run the Silent Runners.vbs file.
  • You will receive a prompt: "Do you want to skip supplementary searches?" - click "NO."
  • If your antivirus has a script blocker, you will get a warning asking if you want to allow Silent Runners.vbs to run.
  • This script is not malicious so please allow it.
  • A text file will appear in the folder - it's not done, let it run. (It won't appear to be doing anything!)
  • Once the "All Done!" prompt flashes up, open the text file, and copy & paste it in your next reply.
Thanks,
tea

Good morning.

Okay, I see which files need to go, but I sure would like to try one more time with ComboFix before I send you into your system to rip them out manually. Would you please?

Thanks,
tea

Hi tea,
ComboFix still hangs up. Shall we move on to a manual de-funkification of this poor computer?

Thanks!
