Hello, I wanted to tell you I love your website!!! I really think you all are heroes to try to help stop this awful adware. I have been on my computer all day trying to get rid of this outerinfo trojan that infected my computer this morning. I have run scans with adaware, spybot, Avg, and done clean sweep stuff and tried everything~ I also downloaded a removal tool for outerinfo from the outerinfo website which I hope was not a stupid idea. What I am now wondering is. what next? Is it still on my computer? Oh I would so much appreciate your help! Thanks so much.

Hello ktccti,

Welcome to Bleeping Computer

I also downloaded a removal tool for outerinfo from the outerinfo website which I hope was not a stupid idea.

No, not stupid at all. Sometimes the best way to remove these things is still to uninstall them. The problem is that a lot of times the uninstallers don't work.

1. Download this file - combofix.exe
2. Double click combofix.exe & follow the prompts.
3. When finished, it will produce a log for you. Post that log in your next reply please, along with a new HijackThis log.

Note:
Do not mouseclick combofix's window while it's running. That may cause it to stall.

Thanks,
tea

Every little bit helps! :)
You can even use your credit card! Thank you!

Hello,

You're welcome. How is it running? It's looking better.

Your Java is way out of date, which leaves your computer vulnerable.

Updating Java
  • Download the latest version of Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6u3.
  • Scroll down to where it says "The J2SE Runtime Environment (JRE) allows end-users to run Java applications".
  • Click the "Download" button to the right.
  • Check the box that says: "Accept License Agreement".
  • The page will refresh.
  • Click on the link to download Windows Offline Installation with or without Multi-language and save to your desktop.
  • Close any programs you may have running - especially your web browser.
  • Go to Start > Control Panel double-click on Add/Remove programs and remove all older versions of Java.
  • Check any item with Java Runtime Environment (JRE or J2SE) in the name.
  • Click the Remove or Change/Remove button.
  • Repeat as many times as necessary to remove each Java version.
  • Reboot your computer once all Java components are removed.
  • Then from your desktop double-click on jre-6-windows-i586.exe to install the newest version.
Please be sure AVG AntiSpyware is updated, then run a scan and post the report for me.

Thanks,
tea

Hi,

Going pretty good here, thanks, and yourself?

You did get it...it's in System Restore and qoobox and not a threat. We can clear that right now. The rest are cookies

Please delete ComboFix and its accompanying folder C:\Qoobox.

Click Start Menu > Run > type (or copy and paste)

%SystemRoot%\System32\restore\rstrui.exe

Press OK. Choose Create a Restore Point then click Next. Name it ( something you'll remember) and click Create, when the confirmation screen shows the restore point has been created click Close.

Next goto Start Menu > Run > type

cleanmgr

Click OK, Disk Cleanup will open and start calculating the amount of space that can be freed, Once thats finished it will open the Disk Cleanup options screen, click the More Options tab then click Clean up on the system restore area and choose Yes at the confirmation window which will remove all the restore points except the one we just created.

To close Disk Cleanup and remove the Temporary Internet Files detected in the initial scan click OK then choose Yes on the confirmation window.

Now see what AVG says.

Regards,
tea

Hi Tea,

Thanks so much again, for helping me!!! I did what you suggested and here is the latest AVG report. Do you think we got it??

Also... do you happen to know how I can convert my files back to microsoft word instead of note pad? I'm not sure how that happened but they converted to being saved in that format after I loaded the new version of JAVA.

forever grateful,
kt

Oops, I forgot to paste in the AVG report... this computer is taking away my brain cells! Here it is. And also... you said for me to delete Combo Fix and Qoobox. I wasn't exactly sure how to delete it so I just right clicked combo Fix and deleted it on my desktop... is that right? I couldn't find Qoobox - or do I go into the registry? Yikes.. I know I'm showing my total ignorance of my computer... but I sure know a lot more than I did three days ago when I got invaded by the trojans.. PS I figured out how to fix the wordpad problem. many thanks mon ami

No biggie.....that's a good report! You did right for ComboFix, and you'll find Qoobox in the C:\Windows folder.

How did you fix your Word problem?

You're most welcome for the help. :) I do believe you're good to go now.

Below I have included a number of recommendations on how to protect your computer in order to prevent future malware infections. Please take these recommendations seriously! These few simple steps can stave off the vast majority of spyware problems.

Regularly go to http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com and download all the "critical updates" for Windows, including the latest version of Internet Explorer. This can patch many of the security holes through which attackers can gain access to your computer. You should also turn on the Windows automatic update feature.

You should definitely maintain a firewall. Some good free firewalls are Kerio, or Outpost. I use Comodo on my own system and really like it. http://comodo.com
A tutorial on understanding and using firewalls may be found here.

In order to protect yourself against spyware, you should consider installing and running the following free programs:

SpywareBlaster
A tutorial on using SpywareBlaster to prevent spyware from ever installing on your computer may be found here.

SpywareGuard
A tutorial on using SpywareGuard for realtime protection against spyware and hijackers may be found here.

Spybot-Search & Destroy
A tutorial on using Spybot to remove spyware from your computer may be found here. Please also remember to enable Spybot's "Immunize" and "TeaTimer" features.

IE/Spyad:
It places over 5000 malicious websites and domains in your IE's restricted zone.
IE/Spyad

Make sure to keep these programs up-to-date and to run them regularly, as this can prevent a great deal of spyware hassle.

* Avoid illegal sites, because that's where most malware is present.
* Don't click on links inside popups.
* Don't click on links in spam messages claiming to offer anti-spyware software; because most of these so called removers ARE spyware.
* Download free software only from sites you know and trust. A lot of free software can bundle other software, including spyware.

Please consider using an alternate browser. Mozilla's Firefox browser is fantastic; it is much more secure than Internet Explorer, immune to almost all known browser hijackers, and also has the best built-in popup blocker (as an added benefit!) that I have ever seen. If you are interested, Firefox may be downloaded from here:
http://www.mozilla.org/products/firefox/

Please make sure to run your antivirus software regularly, and to keep it up-to-date.

Take care!
