Making Scanned Adobe Docs Small

Every time I scan a document meant to be saved as a PDF file, it saves as a 5 or 6 MB doc. When I attach the file to an email it gets kicked back by the receivers server as too big. Any help as I am not the sharpest knife in the drawer?!?
