I've run Spybot, Ad-aware, and SUPERAntiSpyware. SUPERAntiSpyware was initially able to detect 20 various infections of the Vundo virus as well as Winfixer and said it cleaned them. I ran it again after a reboot but it picked up six more. I've been unable to remove this one particular .dll otherwise I think I would be in the clear of this infection and that is jkhfc.dll which I've tried to delete both in regular Windows mode and in safe mode. I've also used both Vundo removal programs which did not help at all in either detecting the malware or said it was unable to. I also ran both Vundo removal programs in Safe Mode too. Since then I've run HJT before renaming it and it wasn't able to pick up the hidden programs running. I've since renamed HiJackThis.exe to Angel.exe and it picked up the nagging .dll I spoke of before. I also have McAffee Antivirus running, and I did an online virus scan from HouseCall too. So far everything has failed until I recently renamed the HJT program a few minutes ago. Any further instructions are always appreciated. Here is HJT log after renaming it. Thanks.

Hello there and welcome to BleepingComputer. My name is Charles and I will be dealing with your log today.
Double-click VundoFix.exe to run it.
Click the Scan for Vundo button.
Once it's done scanning, click the Remove Vundo button.
You will receive a prompt asking if you want to remove the files, click YES
Once you click yes, your desktop will go blank as it starts removing Vundo.
When completed, it will prompt that it will reboot your computer, click OK.
Please post the contents of C:\vundofix.txt in your next reply.
Note: It is possible that VundoFix encountered a file it could not remove.
VundoFix will run on reboot, simply follow the above instructions starting from "Click the Scan for Vundo button" when VundoFix appears upon rebooting.

Please include VundoFix.txt and a new HijackThis log in your next reply.
Thanks,
Charles

Hi Charles. Here are both logs.

VundoFix V6.5.10

Checking Java version...

Java version is 1.4.2.3
Old versions of java are exploitable and should be removed.

Scan started at 12:27:13 PM 10/18/2007

Listing files found while scanning....

No infected files were found.

I had an outdated version of HiJackThis so I got the latest version and here is the updated log. I did rename HiJackThis.exe to Angel.exe before running it.

EDIT: Just wanted to clarify even though the VundoFix didn't detect anything I'm certain I still have it on my computer. SUPERAntiSpyware detects at least 6 traces of it, especially the jkhfc.dll which it says it removes, but gets another copy of it made immediately after deletion. I don't know if this will help but this is the only way I've had marginal success in disabling the popups when I load IE or when it pops up out of the blue.

Double-click VundoFix.exe to run it.
When VundoFix re-opens, click "Scan for Vundo" button.
Once the scan is complete, right click inside the listbox (white box) and click "Add More Files"
Copy and paste the entries below into the top boxes:

C:\WINDOWS\system32\jkhfc.dll

Click "Add Files" and click "Close Window".
Click the Remove Vundo button.
You will receive a prompt asking if you want to remove the files, click YES
Once you click yes, your Desktop will go blank as it starts removing Vundo - this is normal.
When completed, it will prompt that it will shutdown your computer, click OK.
Turn your computer back on.

Please include VundoFix.txt and a new HijackThis log in your next reply. Make sure you include the whole of the logs.
Thanks,
Charles

Hi there,
I do not recommend that you have more than one antivirus product installed and running on your computer at a time.
The reason for this is that if both products have their automatic (Real-Time) protection switched on, then those products which do not encrypt the virus strings within them can cause other antivirus products to create "false alarms". It can also lead to a clash as both products fight for access to files which are opened again this is the resident/automatic protection.
In general terms, the two programs may conflict and cause false alarms - when the antivirus software tells you that your PC has a virus when it actually doesn't. Also it can cause system performance problems; your system may lock up due to both software products attempting to access the same file at the same time.
Therefore please go to Add/Remove in the Control Panel and remove either McAfee or Symantec.

Download Combofix to your Desktop.
Double click combofix.exe
Follow the prompts that are displayed.
Don't click on the window while the fix is running, because that will cause your system to hang.
When finished, it should produce a log, combofix.txt. Post that in your next reply.

I'd like to see the Combofix log along with a new HijackThis log in your reply.
Thanks,
Charles

I did run a scan with SUPERAntiSpyware and it no longer detected anymore malware from Winfixer or Vundo. That jkhfc.dll has been removed since then. About the Symantic and McAffee scanners, I only have one scanner and that's McAffee but the software that came with this Dell preinstalled Norton Ghost as well so that's why you see Symantec programs running as well.

Make a list of all the programs installed on your computer:
Open HijackThis
Click the Config... button, then go to the Misc Tools section.
Press Open Uninstall Manager. You'll see a list of programs.
Select Save List... - save it to your Desktop.
The file "uninstall_list.txt" will be created.

Copy and paste the contents of this file to your next reply.
Thanks,
Charles

Please run Panda's ActiveScan.
Once you are on the Panda site click the Scan your PC button
A new window will open, click the Check Now button.
Enter your personal details.
Click the big Scan Now button.
It will ask to install various content - please allow this.
It will start downloading the files it requires for the scan, which may take a while.
When download is complete, click on Local Disks to start the scan.
When the scan has finished - if anything malicious is found - click the See Report button.
Click Save Report and save the file to your Desktop, so you can post this log in your next reply.

Thanks,
Charles

Great job! Now that you're free from malware, please follow these simple steps to decrease the likelihood of getting re-infected again:

Set your system to not show all files.
Navigate to Start | My Computer | Tools | Folder Options.
Select the View tab. Under the "Hidden Files and Folders" heading, select "Do not show hidden files and folders".
Check: Hide file extensions for known file types
Check the Hide protected operating system files (recommended) option.
Click Yes to confirm.

Please navigate to http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com and download all the "critical updates" for Windows. This can patch many of the security holes through which attackers can gain access to your computer.
Either enable 'Automatic Updates' under Start | Control Panel | Automatic Updates, or get into the habit of checking for Windows updates regularly. I cannot stress enough how important this is.

In order to protect yourself against spyware, you should consider installing and running the following free programs:
Ad-Aware SE
A tutorial on using Ad-Aware to remove spyware from your computer may be found here.
Spybot-Search & Destroy
A tutorial on using Spybot to remove spyware from your computer may be found here. Please also remember to enable Spybot's "Immunize" and "TeaTimer" features.
SpywareBlaster
A tutorial on using SpywareBlaster to prevent spyware from ever installing on your computer may be found here.
Make sure to keep these programs up-to-date and to run them regularly, as this can prevent a great deal of spyware hassle.

Thanks and happy computing,
Charles
