Problems

Startup used to take 15-30 seconds, now running 10-15 minutes
I cant run more than one program at a time without extended loading time or freezing
All sounds are skipping
Audio is way off when i burn CDs and DVDs
When Using Avast Anti-Virus the scan went from taking 45min-1hr to well over 7 hours
It also had Files that were listed as Unable to scan: GZIP archive is corrupted
File names were A0003622.exe and A0007432exe and they were located in System Volume Information

Things I've recently changed

Installed and Uninstalled the following:
Limwire Pro- only downloaded a few things before i removed it
SpySpweeper- Avast said that the setup files were viruses so it didnt install correctly
Winamp Pro- seemed to work fine
Nero 7 Ultra- setup files were corrupt according to Avast
Ace Utilites- seemed to work fine. only used to delete temp files and empty folders
Panda Active Scan- tried to install a couple times but wouldnt finish because because Avast told me several files were trojans
Avast- was taking too long to scan so i removed it and replaced with AVG. AVG reports no threats.

Installed a new DVD drive because I thought the old one was causing the CDs and DVDs to skip
About a month ago i added more memory and have not had any problems with speed or lag until the last few days or so.
I also took some older mix CDs and ripped them to my computer

I went through all the pre recs for posting a hijackthis log and all of them came up clean. Im at a loss for what to do because I can't seem to find out what the problem is.

Here is My HiJackThis Log

since the last post i decided to attempt to fix my computer by myself because it is very important that i get it working as soon as possible. i started with the audio problem. i tried to reinstall my audio device but once it was uninstalled the disc would not reinstall it. it kept closing down before it was done. my computer shut down on its own and returned with only my background picture. i had to start up again using last known good configuration. here is a new hijackthis log. if you are reading this and dont think you can help please let me know so i can ask somewhere else. thank you very much.

Hi and welcome,

Sorry for delay. we are quite busy here.

Download Deckard's System Scanner to your Desktop.:

http://www.techsupportforum.com/sectools/Deckard/dss.exe
http://deckard.geekstogo.com/dss.exe

Close all applications and windows.
Double-click on dss.exe to run it, and follow the prompts.
When the scan is complete, a text file will open - Main.txt
Copy (Ctrl+A then Ctrl+C) and paste (Ctrl+V) the contents of Main.txt here.
A folder, C:\Deckard\System Scanner, will also open. In it will be another text file, Extra.txt.
Please attach Extra.txt to your post.

Note: some firewalls may warn that sigcheck.exe is trying to access the internet - please ensure that you allow sigcheck.exe permission to do so.

To attach a file to a new post, simply
Click the[Manage Attachments] button under Additional Options > Attach Files on the post composition page, and
copy and paste the following into the "Upload File from your Computer" box:

C:\Deckard\System Scanner\Extra.txt

Click Upload.

What DSS will do:
--create a new System Restore point in Windows XP and Vista.
--clean your Temporary Files, Downloaded Program Files, and Internet Cache Files, and also empty the Recycle Bin on all drives.
--check some important areas of your system and produce a report for your analyst to review.
--System Scanner automatically runs HijackThis for you, but it will also install and place a shortcut to HijackThis on your desktop if you do not already have HijackThis installed.

Thanks
I'll have an order of massive trojan attack please with a side order of rootkit and virus dip.
Pre-course order of fresh spyware salad please with a side order of polymorphic dressing.
And to drink...a nice tall glass of adware!

For dessert; can I have a bowl of the freshest worms you have please?.

Never Give Up!

Hi,

Open Hijackthis
Click "config"
Click "misc tools"
check both options beside "generate startuplist log" and generate the log.

Post results.

Next:

You will need to disable TeaTimer for this scan or else its going to take a fit and scan won't run right.

1.) Open Spybot and click on Mode and check Advanced Mode
2.) Check yes to next window.
3.) Click on Tools in bottom left hand corner.
4.) Click on System Startup icon.
5.) Uncheck Teatimer box.
6.) Click Allow Change box.

You can follow this link if you need help: http://russelltexas.com/malware/teatimer.htm

Download this tool to your desktop:
http://www.uploads.ejvindh.net/rootchk.exe
Run the program. After a short time a logfile will turn up. Copy the contents of the log into the thread.

----------------------

You mentioned earler having to replace the DVD Rom drive.
I want to check something....

Right click "my computer" and choose properties.
Click "hardware"
Click "device manager"
Expand "IDE ATA/ATAPI controllers"
Double click the "Primary Channel" entry.
Click "advanced settings"

What does it say beside "Current Transfer mode" ?

Thanks

Hi,

P10 mode or PIO mode was listed in "Current Transfer Mode for both Device 0 and Device 1.

Excellent. I think this is the big issue.
When your old DVD Rom drive died or rather was dying each time it had an issue Windows lowers the transfer speed till it hits the lowest possible. Does this by design.
When you installed the new DVD Rom drive... windows didn't fix the transfer mode.
Device 0 (the hard drive) should be somewhere near Ultra DMA Mode 5
If the DVD Rom drive is on the same channel then your device 1 should prolly be somewhere near Ultra DMA Mode 2

Close any unecessary running programs.
This will take 2 reboots to fix.
make sure there are no CDs in the DVD Rom drive.

Open device manager
Expand "IDE ATA/ATAPI controllers"
Right click the Primary Channel and choose Uninstall
OK the prompt & reboot when it tells you.
Once you restart Windows should find the devices and re-install them
It *should tell you to reboot again.
If it don't tell you... reboot when it is done installing devices.
Last reboot should be quicker.

Let me know how it is running when done.

Thanks

things seem to be working much better now, thank you. the new Current Transfer Mode after the install are Ultra DMA Mode 5 for device 0 and Ultra DMA Mode 4 for device 1. i have not tried to burn anything yet, so i dont know how that will work out, but i will let you know if there are any problems.

as far as the new dvd drive, i realized that there was nothing wrong with the old one so im considereing re-installing it and sending back the new one. are those the settings that should be maintained no matter which drive i am using?

thanks again for all your help!

Hi,

Glad to hear things are running better. You're welcome.

If you are re-installing the old DVD Rom drive it would be better if at all possible to put it on the secondary IDE.
I had nothing but problems till I did this myself.
I now have both my hdd on primary and my DVD Rom on the secondary. Big difference.
Wouldn't hurt to do this anyway regardless of wether or not you are going to put back the old DVD Rom drive.
Cost to you -- another data cable.

Depending how old the other DVD Rom is it may not be Ultra DMA Mode 4
Mine is Ultra DMA Mode 2
Unless it is ancient it should definately not be PIO mode.

If you have the CDRom/DVD Rom drive on the secondary and run into issues... less likely it will screw up the transfer modes on the hdd if you end up with a few bad burns and Windows can't read the CD/DVD.

Long as nothing goes wrong with the hdd itself or the DVD Rom... those settings should stay intact without you having to do anything.

We should clean up the tools we used for t-shooting.

delete:

Dss.exe
rootchk.exe
C:\Deckard

You can re-enable TeaTimer if you wish.

i only have the one slot in my motherboard to plug in a harddrive/dvd drive so i have to use my dvd drive as the 'slave'... one thing i didnt think of when buying my poor barebones system .

also, my computer is still running very slow. it boots up very fast, the audio plays fine, i am now able to burn stuff without it being messed up, but it is still running slower than before i added more memory. i was using this memory for a month before my computer slowed, so i know whats its capable of. i cant seem to run more than one program at once without a serious delay or applications becoming non-responsive.

Hi,

I wonder if your RAM is going bad.
I have seem RAM go bad in alot shorter than a month...

http://www.memtest86.com/memtest86-3.3.iso.zip

Download> save> unzip that then burn the ISO image.
Boot with it and let it do say... 4 or 5 passes.
You might hafta configure your BIOS to boot from CDRom first.

If something is wrong Memtest86 should give fail messege(s).

Here is more info about Memtest86:

http://www.memtest86.com/

LMK what you find.

no errors with memory. computer still extremely slow.

also, do you know how i can remove all traces of Nero after uninstall? I can never seem to fully get rid of it.

also. last time i shut down my computer an error came up. i didnt have a chance to write it all down before it closed but here it is : access violation at address (a group of numbers, some more words and another group of numbers[i think]) i believe it also said something about tea timer.

Hi,

What version of Nero was it?
I need to know this cus if the remains is not removed properly we can bork the way the CD/DVD rom works.

TeaTimer...
Hmmm
Uninstall Spybot S & D allowing it to remove all components including quarentines stuff then after a reboot re-install it.

Then I wanna see a boot log.

Click start> run> type: msconfig and hit enter.
click the Boot.ini tab
checkmark the entry for /BOOTLOG
Click "Apply" and OK.
When asked to restart click Ok to restart.

Once restarted you may get warning about changes to the way windows starts.
Just check 'don't tell me this again" and click OK.

Go here:

C:\Windows
Locate ntbtlog.txt and delete it.

Reboot

Post the new c:\windows\ntbtlog.txt

Thanks
