Hi myenginesblown,

There are a number of steps you need to take in order to clean your machine. Please carry out the steps in the order they are given. You may find it helpful to print these instructions out as you will not have access to the Internet whilst you are running in Safe mode.
  • I need to get samples of some of your files. Please create a folder called c:\submit. Now copy the following files into that directory:

    C:\WINDOWS\vexsj.exe
    C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\STELTC5.EXE
SPORTZ.EXE you will need to search for this file using Windows Explorer

To copy the files simply navigate to the directory they are in and right click on them and then click on copy. Then paste these files into the c:\submit directory. Once the files are all copied I need you to zip the folder. If you are using XP or ME right-click on the folder and click on the Send To option and then send it to a compressed folder. You will now see a file called submit.zip. If you are using another version of Windows, please download a program called Winzip and zip it using that. Then go to http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/submit-malware.php, fill in the required fields, and browse to the file. Then click on the Send File button.

  • You have NavExcel bar & Windows AdStatus installed and this is known to download and execute arbitrary code or are Adware. Go to Add/Remove Programs in the Control Panel, choose the NavHelper and Windows AdStatus entries and remove/uninstall the software then reboot your machine.

  • Please make sure that you can view all hidden files. Instructions on how to do this can be found here:
How to see hidden files in Windows

  • Download System Security Suite here:
System Security Suite Download & Tutorial. Unzip it to your desktop.
Install the program. Don't use it yet.

  • Restart you machine in Safe Mode:
    • Reboot your computer
    • As the machine starts, continually tap the F8 key
    • You will then be presented with a menu screen
    • Use the the up/down arrow keys to select Safe Mode
    • Press the Enter key to boot in that mode.
  • Run HijackThis
Click on the Scan button and when complete
Put a check beside all of the items listed below. Please don't be concerned if some of the entries are not present.
    R0 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Local Page = C:\WINDOWS\System32\blank.htm
    R3 - URLSearchHook: {B5AB638F-D76C-415B-A8F2-F3CEAC502212} - - (no file)
    O2 - BHO: Helper Class - {D80C4E21-C346-4E21-8E64-20746AA20AEB} - C:\PROGRAM FILES\NAVEXCEL SEARCH TOOLBAR\NAVEXCELBAR.DLL
    O3 - Toolbar: NavExcel Toolbar - {5AA06644-BC46-4220-A460-47A6EB47C96D} - C:\PROGRAM FILES\NAVEXCEL SEARCH TOOLBAR\NAVEXCELBAR.DLL
    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [Windows AdStatus] C:\PROGRAM FILES\WINDOWS ADSTATUS\WINSTAT.EXE

Close all open Explorer windows and browsers
Click on the "Fix Checked" button
When complete and all files removed, close the application.

  • Please delete the following files or folders (delete item in bold). Please do not be concerned if
any of the items are not found as they may have been automatically removed by actions I had
you take earlier in the cleaning process.C:\PROGRAM FILES\NAVEXCEL SEARCH TOOLBAR >>> Folder
    C:\PROGRAM FILES\WINDOWS ADSTATUS >>> Folder
  • Close all windows and browsers that are open.
Clean out Temporary Folders and Temporary Internet Files as follows:
    • Open the System Security Suite that I had you download earlier.
    • In the Items to Clear tab check:
      - Internet Explorer (left pane): Cookies & Temporary files
      - My Computer (right pane): Temporary files & Recycle Bin
Click the Clear Selected Items button.
    Close the program.

  • Reboot your machine in normal mode, run HijackThis and post a new log here using the Add Reply button. Can you include information as to what problems you were having and how the situation is now.
