Tried other Tech Support forums/google, at a dead end.

Sympmtoms:
No sounds, slow logins, missing taskbar, can't run IE (the window flashes up then disappears), Install errors for some new programs, can't turn on Windows Firewall or Norton AV (which should be running at startup and aren't), System Restore Points are missing/inaccessible, Copy-Paste only works in/from Notepad, no Click-Drag, MSN Explorer is the only working browser, and several links aren't working in that.

I've tried:
Stinger, HiddenFinder, Spybot S&D, IEReg.bat, Security Task Manager, XP's System File Checker, XP's 'Clean Boot', Safe Mode, posting a HJT log on other forums (no reply)

AVG Free, Killbox and SUPER Anti-Spyware all won't install. Two of these came with 'RPC Server Unavailable' errors, but Google returned technical server jargon.

If I turn on the Language Toolbar (or others) through the Control Panel, the Taskbar reappears (although sitting lower in the screen), but still doesn't show the programs I'm running.

Every scan's coming back clean, I can't find any suspicious or malignant processes, hidden or otherwise, no-one wants to respond to my HJT logs, and I'm hoping like hell I don't have to re-install Windows for this. Any help very, very, very appreciated.

Hi Blaah Blaah and Welcome to the Bleeping Computer!

You should print out these instructions or copy them to a NotePad file so they will be accessible. Some steps will require you to disconnect from the Internet or use Safe Mode and you will not have access to this page.

Download SDFix and save it to your desktop.
Double click SDFix.exe and it will extract the files to %systemdrive%
(this is the drive that contains the Windows Directory, typically C:\SDFix). DO NOT use it just yet.

Reboot your computer in SAFE MODE" using the F8 method. To do this, restart your computer and after hearing your computer beep once during startup [but before the Windows icon appears] press the F8 key repeatedly. A menu will appear with several options. Use the arrow keys to navigate and select the option to run Windows in "Safe Mode".

Open the SDFix folder and double click RunThis.bat to start the script.
  • Type Y to begin the cleanup process.
  • It will remove any Trojan Services or Registry Entries found then prompt you to press any key to Reboot.
  • Press any Key and it will restart the PC.
  • When the PC restarts, the Fixtool will run again and complete the removal process then display Finished, press any key to end the script and load your desktop icons.
  • Once the desktop icons load the SDFix report will open on screen and also save into the SDFix folder as Report.txt.
  • Finally copy and paste the contents of the results file Report.txt in your next reply along with a new HijackThis log.

Thanks for the help, scanned and posting a log.

I've been doing some searching/tinkering etc trying to turn on sound/fix IE, or at least sort out one of the symptoms, and I think I've traced it back to errors in the Windows Services. The RPC and various others (pretty much all of them) won't turn on, most of them returning 1068 errors, but the RPC returning a 193 error. If I right-click and select Properties, nothing happens. I also get a weird window in the Extended tab (would print screen, but doubt it'll work), and can only view the Services in the Standard tab. Google wasn't very useful, and if I can find my XP disc I MIGHT try a Repair Installation, but worried that'll farce up. So any suggestions/help on how I reset/repair/fix the Service dependencies?

Anyhoo, on with the logs.

The good thing is no file were found, only registry entries fixed.

Im not sure about the sound, not my exact specialty.

Open HijackThis-> Click "Do a System Scan Only" and put a check by these but DO NOT hit the Fix Checked button yet

Can't run the F-Secure Scanner because it needs to be run in IE, and whatever's affected my computer won't let me run IE (IE7 blinks on then disappears. If I delete 7 and use 6 I just get a 404 type error, with an extra bit at the top saying there's 'network connectivity problems'. 'Diagnose Connection Problems' returns 'Windows cannot troubleshoot your network connection because an error has occured')

Image of my messed up Computer Management thing:

(And I just had to type that whole thing out -_-)

OK,you got me stumped so far.

Please download Combofix to your desktop.
Doubleclick combo.exe to launch the application.
Follow the prompts that will be displayed on the screen.
Don't click on the window while the fix is running, because that will cause your system to hang.
When finished, it should produce a log, combofix.txt.
Post this log in your next reply

Hmmmm,lets look a little more.

Open HijackThis and Click the "Open Misc Tools Section" tab.

Select Generate StartUpList log and make sure that both Boxes beside it are checked:

Put a check by:
List all minor sections(Full)
and
List Empty Sections(Complete)

It will produce a NotePad Page,I need you to copy the entire contents of that page to the next reply.

Erm, a lot?

Steam (HL2, CS:S etc)
FarCry
Call of Duty 1 & 2
Medal of Honor: Allied Assault
FarCry
Black & White
etc

Also tonnes of freeware/Indie games like Wik, Toribash, SkiStunt, etc.

But I don't think its any new games or software that's caused it, as I haven't recently installed anything before the problems. I got a popup (fairly rare) the night before, which seemed to take a while to shutdown (semi-froze the pc for about half a minute). Then I turned off, and when I rebooted the next morning there was no sound and no taskbar.

I am fairly definite now that its an error in the Windows Services, specifically in the RPC service which all the others depend on, but no idea what next to fix it.

That explains the couple of drivers I see, mostly used for Game Copyright Protections.

Unfortuantly, some uninstalls, not just games but things like Printers and such will leave an Abandoned registry key referring to just what you said,an RPC Depend on Service failure, for lack of more intelligent 5 dollar words.

Finding the issue is a real chore and should be dealt with in the Hardware or XP forums so the Malware folks can do the Malware thing and the Hardware/XP folks can do thier thing.

At this point,Im unsure what else I can do for your machine as I dont think the issue is malware related.

Go back to the point you described just before the reboot which yielded all the problems.

Can you think of any uninstalls or installs that you did say.....1 or 2 days prior to this event?
