What happens when you click on the message that says you're not connected? If this is a laptop, it may be that this notice is saying that your wired connection is not connected.
To change the visible reminders in the system tray, go to Start and type in "ncpa.cpl" (without the quotes) and press Enter
You'll find a list of your network connections here. Right click on your wireless connection and select "Properties", then select the General tab. At the bottom should be a check box for "Show icon in notification area when connected" - put a check in that box and click on OK to accept it. That should give you another icon in your System Tray for the wireless connection.
