Hello,

My wife managed to install some rogue software on our PC and it's proving quite tricky to get rid of...
2 messages constantly appear:
- System Tray popup message saying "Windows antivirus. Windows has detected spyware infection! ... Click here to protect your computer from spyware!". Also popup dialog "Windows security alert. Warning! Potential Spyware Operation!". It appears this is a well known problem but despite installing and running NOD 32, Spybot, Ad-Aware and a million others, I cannot get rid of these messages. I also cannot run Control Panel anymore - if I try to run control.exe I get a messages saying "This operation has been cancelled due to restrictions in operation on this computer."

Hopefully someone can help.

thanks
James

Hi redChair and Welcome to the Bleeping Computer!

Download ComboFix from Here or Here to your Desktop.
  • Double click combofix.exe and follow the prompts.
  • When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Post that log and a HiJackthis log in your next reply
Note: Do not mouseclick combofix's window while its running. That may cause it to stall

Hi CreteMonster,

Thanks for your reply. I have downloaded and ran Combofix.exe, however it does not seem to get past "Completed Stage 6A" - I left it running for 45 minutes but to no avail.
I also noticed that whenever I start it up it tries to change some registry settings for internet explorer search page, screensaver etc. I accepted a couple of these changes as I thought they were necessary for Combofix to run, however then I had second thoughts so rejected the last couple. Is this what is causing it to not run properly? Should it be trying to change registry settings without asking?

I should have known NOD wouldnt like the tool.

Go into Safe Mode and run ComboFix please, allow the tool to do what it needs to complete its process,if that means disabling NOD for the session, then please do so.

I just tried it in safe mode and, although I didn't get the registry warnings as before, it still would not get past "Completed Stage 6A", even though I left it running for over 45 mins. Should it take this long to run? (it gets to Stage 6A in only a couple of minutes). Is there a log file or something I can tail to see if it is actually doing anything? Is there an alternative tool I can use?

OK I want you to download Process Explorer from here
http://www.microsoft.com/technet/sysintern...ssexplorer.mspx

Restart in Safe Mode, find the zip you dloaded, right click and choose Extract All,then launch the program.

Right Click on the following process--> shell.exe and select Kill Process

Repeat the same for the process--> guard.exe

Once both are killed, leave process explorer open and attempt to run ComboFix once more.

OK,lets see whats in there thats killing combofix.

Please download Deckard's System Scanner (DSS) to your Desktop.
http://deckard.geekstogo.com/dss.exe

Note: You must be logged onto an account with administrator privileges.

1. Close ALL applications and windows.
2. Double-click on dss.exe to run it, and follow the prompts.
3. When the scan is complete, two text files will open - main.txt <- this one will be maximized and extra.txt<-this one will be minimized
4. Copy (Ctrl+A then Ctrl+C) and paste (Ctrl+V) the contents of main.txt and the extra.txt to your post.

Do me a favor, download a fresh copy of ComboFix from the links in my first post, make sure you save this copy to the root drive C:\

Restart the computer in Safe Mode with Command Prompt

When the dos window appears type in C:\ComboFix.exe and hit enter.

See if this wont allow the app to run this time.

Hopefully you didnt give up on us yet.

Download the file below and unzip it to the desktop.
http://download.bleepingcomputer.com/sUBs/ProcExp.zip

Double Click the ProceExp.reg and answer yes to allow this to merge into the registry.

Next, open Process Explorer and then launch ComboFix again.

When the error appears, bring up Process Explorer and be sure its maximized.

Hopefully you can take a screen shot, just click the PrintScreen button on the keyboard and then go to Start--> All Programs--> Accessories-->Paint

Launch the Paint app and click Edit--> Paste,then--> File--> Save--> Be sure to save as a jpeg and save to the desktop.

See if you can attach that screenshot to the next post please.
