Are they the same thing, or at least compatible with each other? I have a HL-DT-ST DVD-ROM GDR8163B D drive that has crapped out, any advice on how to replace it?

Same thing. Replacing is pretty straight forward. Just make sure the jumper is set correctly. Take care not to knock any wires loose while inside the computer

As the prices have dropped down to about thirty dollars US for a DVD burner I would spend the extra bucks and get the burner, 4.7GB of storage is useful when trying to back up files.

Family and loved ones will always be a priority in my daily life.  You never know when one will leave you.

A DVD burner will play and burn CD's and DVD's. I like Lite-On, NEC, Sony, HERE is a link to newegg's page. Read up on the reviews and pick the one you like.

If I was going to purchase a new burner today I would look at a Lite-On. This one has some very high praises and is at a good price.

I've had very good luck with the Pioneer D111 and D112 series burners (I've got about 6 of them)

I've also had a few of the NEC 35xx models that worked quite well. My first DVD burner was a Sony - and it didn't work very well for me (but this was back when DVD burners first came out).

Reason for edit: Still another brain cramp. Clicked "Add Reply" without thinking (this is my first day off in 2 weeks - not bad for being retired, huh?)
Anywhoooooo....The edit was to add the info about the NEC and Sony burners - I'd forgotten about them (This Alzheimer's is really starting to p*** me off!)
