Hello

I keep getting pop ups that lead to various websites such as drivecleaner.com. I have tried using Vundofix as well as virtumundobegone and got rid of the ones that it detected, but there seems to be more. I am currently using McAfee Security Suite and it notifies me that it has gotten rid of some trojans over and over again (the same trojans). It also notifies me on several instances of a register change attempt by something called "searchindexer" but I choose to block it every time. I hope I have provided enough information to get started. My hijackthis log is posted below:

Hello wierdo17 and welcome to BleepingComputer!

My name is Johannes and I will be dealing with your log today.
Please note that comments are made in green, links are in red and important things are outlined by using the blue color.

Please also take note of the following:
  • I will start working on your Malware issues, this may or may not, solve other issues you have with your machine.
  • The fixes are specific to your problem and should only be used for this issue on this machine
  • The process is not instant. Please continue to review my answers until I tell you your machine is clear. Absence of symptoms does not mean that everything is clear.
  • If you don't know, stop and ask! Don't keep going on.
  • Please reply to this thread. Do not start a new topic.
Please give me some time to look over your log and I will get back to you as soon as possible.
Thanks,
Johannes

Hey wierdo17,

Step #1

Please download Combofix from here: combofix.exe or here combofix.exe.
  • Double click combofix.exe and follow the prompts.
  • When finished, it shall produce a log for you, combofix.txt. Post that log in your next reply together with a new HijackThis log
Note: Do not mouseclick combofix's window whilst it's running. That may cause it to stall

Step #2

Your Java is out of date. Older versions have vulnerabilities that malware can use to infect your system. A malicious site could render Java content under older, vulnerable versions of Sun's software if the user has not removed them. Please follow these steps to remove older version Java components and update:
  • Download the latest version of Java Runtime Environment (JRE) and save it to your desktop.
  • Scroll down to where it says "Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6 Update 3...allows end-users to run Java applications".
  • Click the "Download" button to the right.
  • Read the License Agreement and then check the box that says: "Accept License Agreement".
  • The page will refresh.
  • Click on the link to download Windows Offline Installation and save the file to your desktop.
  • Close any programs you may have running - especially your web browser.
  • Go to Start > Settings > Control Panel, double-click on Add/Remove Programs and remove all older versions of Java.
  • Check (highlight) any item with Java Runtime Environment (JRE or J2SE) in the name.
  • Click the Remove or Change/Remove button.
  • Repeat as many times as necessary to remove each Java versions.
  • Reboot your computer once all Java components are removed.
  • Then from your desktop double-click on jre-6u3-windows-i586-p.exe to install the newest version.
Step #3

Once you have done this please create an uninstall list:
  • Start HiJackThis
  • Press 'Config'
  • Press 'Misc Tools'
  • Press 'Open Uninstall Manager'
  • Press 'Save List'
  • Save the log to a convenient location
Step #4

Please post back with the combofix log, the Uninstall list and a fresh HijackThis log.

Hey wierdo17,

Step #1

Viewpoint Manager is considered as foistware instead of malware since it is installed without users approval but doesn't spy or do anything "bad". This changed from what we know in 2006 read this article:

http://www.clickz.com/news/article.php/3561546

I suggest you remove the program now. Click on start > run > and then paste the following into the "open" field: appwiz.cpl and press OK. From within Add or Remove Programs uninstall the following if they exist: Viewpoint, Viewpoint Manager, Viewpoint Media Player.

I also noticed that your Adobe Reader is outdated. This could also open you to attackers using the now fixed vulnerabilities in your version.

Step #2

Run HijackThis, press Scan, and put a check mark next to all these entries:

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [Wfrmsrv] C:\WINDOWS\Wfrmsrv.exe

Close all other windows and browsers, and press the Fix Checked button.

Step #3

Please now delete the following files and folders (NB: if you cannot find a file or folder that is just fine):

C:\WINDOWS\system32\wvuspnk.dll.vir
C:\WINDOWS\Wfrmsrv.exe
C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\each new axis love <-- this folder
C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Log Htm Lite Each <-- this folder

Step #4

I want you to back up the registry, because we are going to make a few changes to it.
To export the registry to a ".reg" file, please follow these steps: (for a complete tutorial, you can also click here).

Backup your Registry with ERUNT
  • Please use the following link and scroll down to ERUNT and download it (with the installer)
    http://aumha.org/freeware/freeware.php
  • Use the setup program to install ERUNT on your computer
  • Click Erunt.exe to backup your registry to the folder of your choice.
Now a secure backup copy has been made, copy the entire contents inside the CODE box below into Notepad.

Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

[-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\software\microsoft\shared tools\msconfig\startupreg\REF LIES SIXTH LITE]

[-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\software\microsoft\shared tools\msconfig\startupreg\axis love poll lite]

Then click File > Save and save as fix.reg (save as type: All files) to the Desktop.
Go to the Desktop and double-click fix.reg. When prompted to merge its contents to the registry, click the Yes button.

Step #5

Please run the F-Secure Online Scanner
Note: This Scanner is for Internet Explorer Only!
  • Follow the Instruction Here for installation.
  • Accept the License Agreement.
  • Once the ActiveX installs,Click Full System Scan
  • Once the download completes, the scan will begin automatically.
  • The scan will take some time to finish,so please be patient.
  • When the scan completes, click the Automatic cleaning (recommended) button.
  • Click the Show Report button and Copy&Paste the entire report in your next reply.
Please post back with a fresh HijackThis log and the report from F-Secure Onlinescanner.

Thanks

Hey Wierdo17,

looking pretty good already. How are your symptoms going?

Step #1

Please download NoLop and save it to your desktop.
  • First close any other programs you have running as this will require a reboot.
  • Double click NoLop.exe to run it.
  • Now click the button labeled "Search and Destroy"
<<your computer will now be scanned for infected files>>
  • When scanning is finished you will be prompted to reboot only if infected. Click OK.
  • Now click the "REBOOT" button.
  • A Message should popup from NoLop. If not, double click the program again and it will finish.
  • Please post the contents of C:\NoLop.log along with a fresh HijackThis log in your next reply.
If you receive an error: "mscomctl.ocx or one of its dependencies are not correctly registered", please download mscomctl.ocx to your system32 folder then rerun NoLop..

Step #2

Please post back with the log fron Nolop (NoLop.log) and your current symptoms.

Thanks.

By the way, I noticed something called My Way Search Assistant in the uninstall list. Do you think that is important at all?

Thanks for everything. I think my computer is working better now

Hey Wierdo17,

Step #1

* Clean your Cache and Cookies in IE:
  • Close all instances of Outlook Express and Internet Explorer
  • Go to Control Panel > Internet Options > General tab
  • Click the "Delete Cookies" button
  • Next to it, Click the "Delete Files" button
  • When prompted, place a check in: "Delete all offline content", click OK
* Clean your Cache and Cookies in Firefox (In case you also have Firefox installed):
  • Go to Tools > Options.
  • Click Privacy in the menu on the left side of the Options window.
  • Click the Clear button located to the right of each option (History, Cookies, Cache).
  • Click OK to close the Options window
Alternatively, you can clear all information stored while browsing by clicking Clear All.
A confirmation dialog box will be shown before clearing the information.
* Clean other Temporary files + Recycle bin
  • Go to start > run and type: cleanmgr and click ok.
  • Let it scan your system for files to remove.
  • Make sure Temporary Files, Temporary Internet Files, and Recycle Bin are the only things checked.
  • Press OK to remove them.
Step #2

Regarding the My Way Search Assistant, please have a look at this thread post and decide whether or not you wish to uninstall it in that manner.

Step #3

Please have a look at the following links, giving some advice and suggestions for preventing future infections:Now you should Set a New Restore Point to prevent possible reinfection from an old one. Some of the malware you picked up could have been saved in System Restore. Since System Restore is a protected directory, your tools can not access it to delete these bad files which sometimes can reinfect your system. Setting a new restore point AFTER cleaning your system will help prevent this and enable your computer to "roll-back" to a clean working state.

The easiest and safest way to do this is:
  • Go to Start > Programs > Accessories > System Tools and click "System Restore".
  • Choose the radio button marked "Create a Restore Point" on the first screen then click "Next". Give the R.P. a name then click "Create". The new point will be stamped with the current date and time. Keep a log of this so you can find it easily should you need to use System Restore.
  • Then go to Start > Run and type: Cleanmgr
  • Click "OK".
  • Click the "More Options" Tab.
  • Click "Clean Up" in the System Restore section to remove all previous restore points except the newly created one.
I recommend you regularly visit the Windows Update Site , you where lagging behind on a few of them!
  • Lots of Hacking/Trojans use the methods found (plugged by the updates) that have not been stopped by people not updating.
  • By updating your machine, you have one less headache! Posted Image
  • Update ALL Critical updates and any other Windows updates for services/programs that you use.
  • If you wish, you can also use automatic updates. This is a good thing to have if you want to be up-to-date all the time, but can also be a bit of an annoyance due to its handling and the sizes of the updates. If you wish to turn on automatic updates then you will find here is a nice little article about turning on automatic updates.
  • Note that it will download them for you, but you still have to actually click install.
  • If you do not want to have automatic updates turned on, or are on dial-up, you can always download updates seperately at: http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com.
It is also a good idea to check for the latest versions of commonly installed applications that are regularly patched to fix vulnerabilities. You can check these by visiting Secunia Software Inspector and Calendar of Updates.

Another recommend, is to download HostMan. It safeguards you with a regularly updated Hosts-file that blocks dangerous sites from opening. This adds another bit of safety while surfing the Internet. For installlation and setting up, follow these steps:
  • Double-click the Downloaded installer and install the tool to a location of your choice
  • Via the Startmenu, navigate to HostsMan and run the program.
    • Click "Hosts" in the menu
    • Click "Manage Updates" in the submenu
    • Out of the three, select atleast one of the three (I have MVPS Host as my main one)
    • Click "Add Update." After that you will only need to click on the following button to retrieve updates:
      Posted Image
  • Click the X to exit the program.
  • Note: If you were using a custom Hosts file you will need to replace any of those entries yourself.
Finally, and definitely the MOST IMPORTANT step, click on the following tutorial and follow each step listed there:

Thank you so much

I will definitely tell people about this site. It seems like no matter what kind of security protection you have these days, something always manages to get through and infect your computer. I'm glad there are sites like these with dedicated individuals like yourself to give a helping hand. Thanks for everything

Hey wierdo17,

you are more than welcome. Glad we where able to help
A lot has to do with safehex (1st and 3rd of the list of links I gave in step 3). Additionally, it is vital to have your software up to date. A lot of infections are using unpatched flaws in software.

Rgds,

YoHi
