Dell dimension e520

Start it and it goes directly to a black screen.

There are no flash drives or external anythings connected to it.

Next tried tapping F8 for safe mode..the screen comes up and I select safe mode then it goes to the black screen again.

If fixmbr and fixboot from the link dont do it also try bootcfg /rebuild from the recovey console.

Otherwise you may need to do a repair installation if you have an installation CD (or backup your data by slaving the drive to another system or by using something like a Knoppix CD and an external drive and then restore or clean reinstall to get you back to a factory installation).

Have you tried "Last Known Good Configuration" when you get to the Safe Mode boot screen?

No luck on the last known good configuration.

Maybe a boot disk will do but not sure how to make and when I try it wants me to use a floppy but I have no floppy drive.

If the assorted Recovery Console tricks don't fix things (and enable you to get into Windows) - then the next thing to try would be a repair install (as komski suggested above). A repair install won't delete your files or programs and may enable you to recover Windows well enough that you can get into it.

FWIW - The first thing to do once you're in Windows is to backup your stuff.
