Hi, I am new to this site and am having the hardest time getting a virus off my computer. I have run Smitfraudfix and HijackThis and will post the results from HijackThis below. I am no stranger to working out viruses on my computer, but this one is rather tricky and not leaving so soon! The name is Win 32:Tiny-IF. Please help me as I am about to do a system back-up which as everyone knows is the last resort!

Thank you very much in advance.

Hi italstal021 and Welcome to the Bleeping Computer!

Download ComboFix from Here or Here to your Desktop.
  • Double click combofix.exe and follow the prompts.
  • When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Post that log and a HiJackthis log in your next reply
Note: Do not mouseclick combofix's window while its running. That may cause it to stall

Hi Cretemonster! Thank you very much for replying to my post. I really appreciate any help here. I ran both Combo Fix and HijackThis and will post the logs below. The first log is the Combo Fix log.

Thank you again, and I await your response in earnest. I can't wait to be rid of these absolutely annoying pop-ups!

Looks like that went well, tell me what the story is with the 2 Antivirus Software, only reason I ask is I am aware of Mcafee coming preloaded as a trial on alot of machines these days.

Id like to see what a couple of online scans have to say but first Id like to make sure all temps are cleaned out.

Here is the one I use on allmost all my machines, please be sure you have no browsers open when running the tool and be sure to reboot before attempting the Online Scan.

Please download ATF Cleaner by Atribune.
This program is for XP and Windows 2000 onlyDouble-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
Under Main choose: Select All
Click the Empty Selected button.
If you use Firefox browserClick Firefox at the top and choose: Select All
Click the Empty Selected button.
NOTE: If you would like to keep your saved passwords, please click No at the prompt.
If you use Opera browserClick Opera at the top and choose: Select All
Click the Empty Selected button.
NOTE: If you would like to keep your saved passwords, please click No at the prompt.
Click Exit on the Main menu to close the program.
For Technical Support, double-click the e-mail address located at the bottom of each menu.

Please do an online scan with Kaspersky WebScanner

Click on Kaspersky Online Scanner

You will be promted to install an ActiveX component from Kaspersky, Click Yes.
  • The program will launch and then begin downloading the latest definition files:
  • Once the files have been downloaded click on NEXT
  • Now click on Scan Settings
  • In the scan settings make that the following are selected:
    • Scan using the following Anti-Virus database:
    Extended (if available otherwise Standard)
    • Scan Options:
    Scan Archives
    Scan Mail Bases
  • Click OK
  • Now under select a target to scan:Select My Computer
  • This will program will start and scan your system.
  • The scan will take a while so be patient and let it run.
  • Once the scan is complete it will display if your system has been infected.

Hello again. I ran the ATF Cleaner and Scanned my computer using the Kaspersky Webscanner. My results are posted below. I have two Anti-Virus Software programs because my computer came with Mcafee for the first year or so. After the trial ran out I renewed it for a year or so and just began using Avast less than a year ago. My Mcafee still pops up every once in a while but is not my primary Anti-Virus program. I am not getting as many pop-ups at the moment. Something seems to be working. Let me know what to do next. Thank you again for all of your help. I really appreciate it!

OK,thanks for the info on the 2 AVs,the Kaspersky scan didnt show anything of concern.

Now for the 2 AVs which is fine by me but they cant be loading together at boot or eventually its gonna get ugly.

If you choose to keep both we need to disable the Mcafee Antivirus autostarts.

The one good thing about mcafee is the securoty suite that works together which includes a firewall and some intrusion detection.

Now,this can also be accomplished with Avast and ZoneAlarm,I choose ZA because it has the best track record for a free firewall.
http://www.zonealarm.com/store/content/cat...=US&lang=en

If it were me,knowing what I know about Mcafee and it being preloaded and the fact I doubt Ill ever pay for another Antivirus/Firewall again......well now...Id go to add/remove programs and remove mcafee and then immediatly go to the the ZA site and install ZoneAlarm

Lets try another online scan and see what it shows us.

Please run the F-Secure Online Scanner

Note: This Scanner is for Internet Explorer Only
  • Follow the Instruction on the F-Secure page for proper installation.
  • Accept the License Agreement.
  • Once the ActiveX installs,Click Full System Scan
  • Once the download completes, the scan will begin automatically.
  • The scan will take some time to finish,so please be patient.
  • When the scan completes, click the Automatic cleaning (recommended) button.
  • Click the Show Report button and Copy&Paste the entire report in your next reply.

Hello. I decided to remove the Mcafee VS from my computer and downloaded the ZoneAlarm (thank you for letting me know about that). I ran the F-Secure Online Scan and posted the results below. Let me know if there is anything else I should do. Thank you again for letting me know about the potential virus scan issues (with having two VS loaded on my computer).

Everything is looking well, how is the computer acting?

Please look in add/remove programs for any instances of Java Runtime, anything found prior to version 1.6.3 should be removed and the computer restarted, once restarted you can find the latest version at the link below, please download and install version Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6 Update 3
http://java.sun.com/javase/downloads/index.jsp

Once that is completed,Now we need to reset System Restore and Clear out all the old infected restore points.
  • Click Start
  • Right-Click "My Computer" and Select Properties.
  • Click on the "System Restore" tab.
  • Place a checkmark in the box for "Turn off System Restore" and Click "Apply."
  • Restart the Computer.
  • Return to System Restore and Uncheck the box for "Turn off System Restore" and Click "Apply."
  • A fresh Restore Point will be created.

Once finished, post back and let me know how the computer is running?

Hello. I already had the latest version of Java on my computer. I followed the rest of your steps to clear out the old infected restored points. My computer seems to be running well. I have not experienced pop-ups since a few steps ago and my Avast is not detecting any more malware or trojans (before we started all this, it was detecting them every few mins.) Is there anything else I should do? Also, do you have any additional suggestions for avoiding this situation in the future? Thank you again for all of your help. It is much appreciated.

I have a very old Ending Canned Speech that was built last year, the only thing I can really add to this is the program ERUNT which is used ny ComboFix as a supplement to Windows System Restore.

You can find out what it does and how to use in case of emergency at the link below
http://www.silentrunners.org/sr_eruntuse.html

Nice tool for any computer to have but you need to make daily backups for it to be effective.

Now that you are clean, please follow these simple steps in order to keep your computer clean and secure:

Windows, Internet Explorer and Microsoft Office Updates

Visit Microsoft's Windows Update Site frequently. This will ensure your computer has always the latest security updates available installed on your computer. If there are new updates to install, install them immediately, reboot your computer, and revisit the site until there are no more critical updates.

If you are running Microsoft Office, or any application of it, go to the Microsoft's Office Update site and make sure you have at least all the critical updates installed.

If you have trouble with Windows Update, you still can get all the Critical Updates, Security Fixes and Service Packs. Below are a few links to bookmark.

Make your Internet Explorer more secure
  • From within Internet Explorer click on the Tools menu and then click on Options.
  • Click on the Security tab
  • Click the Internet icon so it becomes highlighted.
  • Click on Default Level and click Ok
  • Click on the Custom Level button.
    • Change the Download signed ActiveX controls to Prompt
    • Change the Download unsigned ActiveX controls to Disable
    • Change the Initialise and script ActiveX controls not marked as safe to Disable
    • Change the Installation of desktop items to Prompt
    • Change the Launching programs and files in an IFRAME to Prompt
    • Change the Navigate sub-frames across different domains to Prompt
    • When all these settings have been made, click on the OK button.
    • If it prompts you as to whether or not you want to save the settings, press the Yes button.
  • Next press the Apply button and then the OK to exit the Internet Properties page.

Free programs that may help you in keeping the PC clean
  • SpywareBlaster
SpywareBlaster will add a large list of programs and sites into your Internet Explorer settings that will protect you from running and downloading known malicious programs.
    You can download SpywareBlaster here
A tutorial can be found here
  • SpywareGuard
It provides a degree of real-time protection solution against spyware that is a great addition to SpywareBlaster's protection method. An anti-virus program scans files before you open them and prevents execution if a virus is detected - SpywareGuard does the same thing, but for spyware. And you can easily have an anti-virus program running alongside SpywareGuard. It also features Download Protection and Browser Hijacking Protection.
    You can download SpywareGuard here
A tutorial can be found here
  • IE-SPYAD
IE-SPYAD puts over 5000 sites in your restricted zone, so you'll be protected when you visit innocent-looking sites that aren't actually innocent at all. It basically prevents any downloads, cookies, scripts from the sites listed, although you will still be able to connect to the sites.
    You can download IE-SPYAD here
A tutorial can be found here
  • Hosts File
A Hosts file replaces your current HOSTS file with one containing well known ad, spyware sites etc. Basically, this prevents your coputer from connecting to those sites by redirecting them to 127.0.0.1 which is your local computer.
A tutorial tutorial can be found here
  • MVPS Hosts File
You can download the MVPS Hosts File here
Furthermore the website contains useful tips and links to other resources and utilities.
  • Bluetack's Hosts File and Hosts Manager
Essentially based on the research made by Webhelper, Andrew Clover and Eric L. Howes, it contains most if not all the known spyware sites, sites responsible for hijacks, rogue apllications etc...
    Download Bluetack's Hosts file here
    Download Bluetack's HostsManager here
Free Spyware Detection and Removal Programs
  • Ad-Aware
It scans for known spyware on your computer. These scans should be run at least once every two weeks.
    You can download Ad-Aware here
A tutorial can be found here
  • Spybot - Search & Destroy
It scans for spyware and other malicious programs. Spybot has preventitive tools that stop programs from even installing on your computer.
You can download Spybot - S&D here
A tutorial can be found here
Before adding any other Spyware Detection and Removal programs always check the Rogue Anti-Spyware List for programs known to be misleading, mistaken, or just outright "Foistware".
You will find the list here

AVG Anti-Spyware (formerly Ewido)

Realtime protection against these threats:
  • Hijackers and Spyware
Secure surfing in the Internet without fear of annoying changes of the start page of your browser, tracking cookies and advertising bars.
  • Worms
Nobody should receive e-mails in your name with malicious files in the appendix anymore.
  • Dialers
Security against all kinds of dialers. No fear when receiving the next phone bill.
  • Trojans and Keyloggers
No chance for thieves to steal your bank data and personal sensitive information by tapped Internet connections, remote controlled webcams or secret keyboard recordings.
Most of you will have already the trial version of this software, which is an excellent program and particularly good at catching trojans. If you find it useful you might want to consider buying the full program. When the trial period ends the following features will stop working:
  • Scheduled scans.
  • Real-time monitoring of the entire system.
  • Memory Scan detects active threats.
  • Self-protection at kernel layer guarantees gapless monitoring.
  • Automatic online-update.
The manual memory scan will work in the free version and you can manually update the definitions by clicking on the "Start Update" button under Manual update in the update module.

You can download AVG Anti-Spyware here
AVG Anti-Spyware manual updates.
Download the Full database to your Desktop or to your usual Download Folder and install it by double clicking the file. Make sure that AVG Anti-Spyware is closed before installing the update.

WinPatrol takes snapshot of your critical system resources and alerts you to any changes that may occur without your knowledge. You'll be removing dangerous new programs while others download new reference files.
  • Detect & Neutralize Spyware.
  • Detect & Neutralize ADware.
  • Detect & Neutralize Viral infections.
  • Detect & Neutralize Unwanted IE Add-Ons.
  • Detect & Restore File Type Changes.
  • Automatically Filter Unwanted Cookies.
  • Avoid Start Page Hijacking.
  • Detect changes to HOSTS & critical system files.
  • Kill Multiple Tasks that replicate each other, in a single step!
  • Stop programs that repeatedly add themselves to your Startup List!
Starting with WinPatrol 9.5 PLUS users also get the addition of Real-time Infiltration Detection so they'll know immediately when changes are made to critical system areas. WinPatrol Free is not demo or trial software. You're welcome to use it as long as you like.

Use an AntiVirus Software

It is very important that your computer has an anti-virus software running on your machine. This alone can save you a lot of trouble with malware in the future. See the link below for a listing of some online & their stand-alone antivirus programs.
Computer Safety On line - Anti-Virus
http://forum.malwareremoval.com/viewtopic.php?p=53#53

Update your Anti Virus Software

It is imperative that you update your Anti virus software at least once a week (Even more if you wish). If you do not update your anti virus software then it will not be able to catch any of the new variants that may come out.

Use a Firewall

I can not stress enough how important it is that you use a Firewall on your computer. Without a firewall your computer is susceptible to being hacked and taken over. Simply using a Firewall in its default configuration can lower your risk greatly. For an article on Firewalls and a listing of some available ones see the link below.

Finally, after following up on all these recommendations, why not run Jason Levine's Browser Security Tests ?
They will provide you with an insight on how vulnerable you might still be to a number of common exploits.

Hello again.. Thank you for all of your help. I have a new concern. I am not used to having a firewall. It keeps telling me that it has blocked "Generic Host Process for Win 32 Services." I have had this pop up a few times since we have fixed everything. I also ran Ad-Aware and it found Win32. Trojan Downloader .Agent on my computer. I am re-infected? This all came about after I attempted to sign on to AOL Instant Messenger. I also regularly use such websites as gmail, facebook, and ebay. I am not using any websites out of the ordinary. I re-ran F-Secure. Here is the report:

99% sure the instances of svchost that needs internet access is Microsofts Automatic Updates.

Usually Zone Alarm will give you some details as to what the process wants to access, like its destination?

Either way,I think your fine,AdAware coulda have found an orphaned reg entry or something inside System Restore.

The scan you just posted is encouraging for sure.

Lets see what Panda has to say....
http://www.nanoscan.com/as/v1/principal.aspx

It wont clean adwares so please be sure to save the report it generates and post it in the next reply please.

Thanks for your quick reply. I ran the panda full system scan and here are the results:

Congratulations!
No viruses, spyware, Trojans, or any other ACTIVE or LATENT threats have been detected on your PC.
We detected that avast! antivirus 4.7.1043 [VPS 000781-2] is enabled and up-to-date.
El texto que corresponda en cada momento
After completely scanning your PC, we have not detected any ACTIVE or LATENT malicious software.

So it looks like things are ok. I guess I just become concerned with anything that starts with Win32 (As a majority of the trojans/malware the computer was detecting started with that header). Let me know if there is anything else you think I should do.

Thank you!
