You can look up reviews of software such as this one. The trouble is though that all these different reviews use somewhat different methods to evaluate the various software packages, and as such their rankings will be different.

If you want some suggestions from Bleeping Computer members then please let us know what you are after.

Free or paid for version?

Anti-virus only or a suite containing anti-virus, anti-spyware and firewall?

I am currently using AVG Anti-virus (free) and am happy with it.

Independent comparatives of Anti-virus Software
click on the "Comparatives" link on the left
Comparison of Anti-virus Scanners

Of course these types of comparative testing results will vary depending on who is doing the testing, what they are testing for, what versions of anti-virus software is being tested, etc. There are no universally predefined set of standards/criteria for testing and each test will yield different results. Thus, you need to look for detailed information about how the tests were conducted, the procedures used, and data results. Then you have to consider the features offered by each anti-virus program, the amount of resources utilized and how it may affect system performance.

There is debate as to the effectiveness of some of the top anti-virus suites. Read "Why antivirus apps from Symantec, McAfee and Trend Micro do not work"

I would personally recommend Symantec Corporate Edition (if you are wanting to shell out $$$) or AVG free edition (if you want something free and reliable).

I've used both in the past and was secure with both.
