My computer has been having problems lately. I couldn't figure it out and then I saw this forum about "host" change (c:\\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\DRIVERS\etc\HOSTS CHANGED) in AVG and realized I have the same thing! If it is a trojan of some sort, I have no clue on how to fix it and realize I will need guidance just as another member was guided through it to fix the problem. I have a HIJACK THIS log to share and would love some help to resolve this problem. I am pretty sure that if it is a trojan of some sort that is responsible for slowing my computer and such, it is probably because I was using BITLORD and most likely downloaded some corrupt file or something. So far I have removed mostly all of my files from my computer, I have removed programs and defrag'd my pc... I scanned it with Norton, AVG and SPYSWEEPER as well as SpyBot and Hijack... AVG picked up the host change thing and my Norton keeps telling me a recent attack to my computer was blocked. I don't know if that message keeps popping up because I have AVG and Norton or if is this possible trojan or what. Here is my hijack this log... please help!

Hello jazzyul23,

It is normal that AVG shows that files, the MBR or Boot record to have changed. These are done during normal maintainance, when you or windows updates files or have had to correct errors on the drive. The only time that you should worry is if they also show as infected.

To get AVG to quit showing them as changed, open the AVG Test Center, click the F3 key on your keyboard and tell it to accept the changes.

If it still shows something as changed after this.. delete the file named AVG7QT.DAT in C:\ and AVG will rebuild it the next time it is run.

General system maintenance can change the Hosts file even when it isn't apparent by visual inspection. AVG uses a checksum to compare a file before and after and a minor change or correct to the file would have caused it to appear changed.

Lets check your HOSTS file.
It's located at c:\windows\system32\drivers\etc\hosts.
You can open it up in Notepad.
If it's just some lines on top with a # in front of it and followed by 127.0.0.1 localhost, then you don't need to post it;
however, if there are others following 127.0.0.1 localhost, you may have to fix it.
Post it here if that's the case.

*******************************************

I don't know if that message keeps popping up because I have AVG and Norton or if is this possible trojan or what.

I (as well as MicroSoft, McAfee and Symantec) recommend that you DO NOT have more than one anti virus product installed and running on your computer at a time.

The reason for this is that if both products have their automatic (Real-Time) protection switched on, then those products which do not encrypt the virus strings within them can cause other anti virus products to cause "false alarms".

It can also lead to a clash as both products fight for access to files which are opened again this is the resident/automatic protection.

In general terms, the two programs may conflict and cause:

1) False Alarms: When the anti virus software tells you that your PC has a virus when it actually doesn't.
2) System Performance Problems: Your system may lock up due to both products attempting to access the same file at the same time.

Therefore please go to add/remove in the control panel and remove one of these.
AVG Antivirus or Norton/Symantec Antivirus

*******************************************

Your Java is out of date. Older versions have vulnerabilities that malware can use to infect your system. Please follow these steps to remove older version Java components and update.

Updating Java:
  • Download the latest version of Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6 Update 3.
  • Scroll down to where it says "Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6 Update 3".
  • Click the "Download" button to the right.
  • Check the box that says: "Accept License Agreement".
  • The page will refresh.
  • Click on the link to download Windows Offline Installation, Multi-language jre-6-windows-i586.exe and save to your desktop.
  • Close any programs you may have running - especially your web browser.
  • Go to Start > Control Panel double-click on Add/Remove programs and remove all older versions of Java.
Examples of older versions in Add or Remove Programs:
Java 2 Runtime Environment, SE v1.4.2
    J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0
    J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 6
  • Check any item with Java Runtime Environment (JRE or J2SE) in the name.
  • Click the Remove or Change/Remove button.
  • Repeat as many times as necessary to remove each Java versions.
  • Reboot your computer once all Java components are removed.
  • Then from your desktop double-click on jre-6u3-windows-i586-p.exe to install the newest version.
Reboot and post a fresh Hijackthis log.

Hi SifuMike. First off, thanks so much for helping me out ... I really appreciate it. I know you guys do this on your own time and I think it is great. Anyway, I removed Norton and did everything you asked. I also forgot to mention in my original post that my computer was sluggish. My applications seem to freeze up for a minute and sometimes freeze up completely. A couple of times I was trying to get information off of a dvd rw and my computer seemed like it was restarting but all I got was a black screen saying something along the lines of system boot failure enter startup disk or something like that. I just shut the computer down for a little while and turn it back on. I don't know if this is all related... I just thought it would be important to include all the problems it is having. Here is my hijackthis log.. thanks so much. I attached my host file.

Hi jazzyul23,

My applications seem to freeze up for a minute and sometimes freeze up completely. A couple of times I was trying to get information off of a dvd rw and my computer seemed like it was restarting but all I got was a black screen saying something along the lines of system boot failure enter startup disk or something like that.

That does not sound like a malware problem, more like hardware, program or driver problems. On this forum we only solve the malware problems.

Your hosts file is normal. All the entries in the Hosts file have been added by Spybot.

You have a Red Sheriff infection. We will have it removed shortly.

Download CCleaner and install it. (default location is best). Do not run it yet!

CCleaner Tutorial

*******************************************

Select the following with HijackThis.
With all windows (including this one!) closed (close browser/explorer windows), please select "fix checked"

R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Bar = http://red.clientapps.yahoo.com/customize/...earch/ie.htmlR1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Page = http://red.clientapps.yahoo.com/customize/...//www.yahoo.com
R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\SearchURL,(Default) = http://red.clientapps.yahoo.com/customize/...//www.yahoo.com

If you did not add this to your desktop then Fix it.
O24 - Desktop Component 1: Aqua Real - 7db39a0d-580f-4be9-9195-8bfcd226f6c2

*******************************************

*NOTE* CCleaner deletes EVERYTHING out of temp/temporary folders and does not make backups.

Let's empty the temp files:

Run CCleaner.

CAUTION: Please do NOT use the Issues or Registry button. This is a built-in registry cleaner. If you don't know how to use it, you may cause irreparable damage to your system.

1. Starting with v1.27.260, CCleaner installs the Yahoo Toolbar as an option which IS checkmarked by default during the installation.
IF you do NOT want it, REMOVE the checkmark when provided with the option OR download the toolbarfree Basic version instead of the Standard Build.

2. Before first use, select Options > Advanced and UNCHECK "Only delete files in Windows Temp folder older than 48 hours"

3. Then select the items you wish to clean up.

In the Windows Tab:
Clean all entries in the "Internet Explorer" section except Cookies.
Clean all the entries in the "Windows Explorer" section.
Clean all entries in the "System" section except for Start Menu Shortcuts and Menu Shortcuts.
Clean all entries in the "Advanced" section.
Clean any others that you choose.

In the Applications Tab:
Clean all except cookies in the Firefox/Mozilla section if you use it.
Clean all in the Opera section if you use it.
Clean Sun Java in the Internet Section.
Clean any others that you choose.

4. Click the "Run Cleaner" button.
5. A pop up box will appear advising this process will permanently delete files from your system.
6. Click "OK" and it will scan and clean your system.
7. Click "exit" when done.

If it asks you to reboot at the end, click NO.

CCleaner should be run with the above settings for each User Account!

*******************************************

Reboot to your computer

If you have used Combofix before, please delete the version you are having and redownload it again, because Combofix is being updated everyday.

If your Antivirus or any other realtime scanner is displaying an alert after you downloaded Combofix or while you use Combofix, please disable your scanner and redownload Combofix again. Because some scanners may see some combofix related components as suspicious and block or delete them while there's nothing wrong with them.

1. Download this file - combofix.exe to your Desktop.
Note:
It is important that it is saved directly to your desktop

2. Double click combofix.exe & follow the prompts.
3. When finished, it shall produce a log for you, C:\ComboFix.txt. Post the ComboFix log and a fresh Hijackthis log in your next reply.
Do NOT post the ComboFix-quarantined-files.txt - unless I ask you to.

Note:
Do not mouseclick combofix's window while it's running. That may cause it to stall
If I've saved you time & money,
please make a donation so I can keep helping people just like you! You can donate using a credit card and PayPal. Thank you!

Hi jazzyul23,

Lets do a final check.

Please perform this online scan: Kaspersky Webscan

Note that you need to run this scan with Internet Explorer for it to work correctly.

If you have any problem running the scan to completion, disable your Antivirus and/or firewall temporarily, just refrain from surfing around while the scan is running and be sure to re-enable when done.

Note for Internet Explorer 7 users: If at any time you have trouble with the accept button of the license, click on the Zoom tool located at the right bottom of the IE window and set the zoom to 75 %. Once the license is accepted, reset to 100%.

1. Read the Requirements and Privacy statement, then select "Accept"
2. A dialogue box will appear asking "Do you want to install this software?" Name: kavwebscan_unicode.cab
NOTE: If you are running XP SP2, you may need to click on the Information Bar to allow the ActiveX to install and may need to repeat step 1.
3. Select "Install" to download the ActiveX controls that allows Kaspersky to run.
4. If running MSAS beta you may receive an alert that an IE ActiveX program requires your approval. Click "Allow"
5. Wait for the scanner to initialize and update its databases. When the download is complete it will say ready, click "Next"
6. Click "Scan Settings" and check the option to use the EXTENDED DATABASE, then click "OK"
7. Select a target to scan: Click on "My Computer" and the scan will begin.
8. When the scan is complete choose save the results by clicking "Save Report As HTML" Give the Report a name and save it to your desktop.
If you have any problem saving the report, copy its text to the clipboard, then paste it into an empty Notepad and save it to your desktop.
9. Post the Kaspersky scan results in your next reply.

Last night I was running the scan and it did pick up a virus and said 8 objects were infected at around 60%... this was pretty late at night and I fell asleep. When I woke up in the morning, windows update had rebooted my pc and when i tried to open IE7 it keeps telling me about an error and closes. I tried to use firefox and opera to download kaspersky anti-virus and install it so I could run it off my computer instead of online and it keeps getting an error and won't install. I don't know what to do now. I had removed AVG anti-virus to install Kaspersky and now I can't install it because it says it wants me to verify access to a folder in system 32 and when I hit retry it won't fix and I end up having to cancel the installation.

Hi jazzyul23,

You lost me! What are you trying to install? AVG antivirus? or Kaspersky? Did you uninstall AVG antivirus and then try to reinstall it?

You do NOT install Kaspersky antivirus program, as I want you to run the Kaspersky Online scanner.
You do NOT need to uninstall AVG anti-virus to run Kaspersky online scanner. You just disable AVG antivirus while Kaspersky Online scanner is working.

We can run a different online scanner.
You will need to use Internet Explorer for this scan.
Disable your antivirus program and go here to run BitDefender Online Scan.
Click on I Agree.
Avoid clicking on other links as you don't need to try out the full install at this point, just the online scanner.

When the ActiveX Control has loaded, click on "Click here to scan".
Please be patient, as this scan may take a few hours. It all depends on the number of files on your computer.

NOTE: If you are running XP SP2, you may need to click on the Information Bar to allow the ActiveX to install and may need to repeat the BitDefender Online Scan.

When BitDefender completes the scan, select the "Detected Problems" tab.
Click on "Click here to export scan".
Save the file as an HTML to your Desktop.
Then click on the saved file and allow it to open with your browser.
Go to Edit - Select All then copy/paste that log back here.
Post the BitDefender log.

To clarify what I had done... I ran the Kaspersky Online Scan and at 60% it did detect a virus and told me 8 objects were found. I fell asleep and never got to see it completed. The next day I noticed that my PC had rebooted due to an automatic update that reboots the computer. When I tried to open IE7 to scan again, IE7 would not open. It kept saying it encountered an unexpected error and needed to close... tell microsoft about this problem etc... Being that the online scan doesn't work with other browsers, I figured I'd use those other browsers to download the actual Kaspersky anti-virus program and because I had AVG Anti-Virus installed, it caused a conflict and AVG was removed but then Kaspersky would not install due to some error in system32 folder. I then installed Avast Anti-Virus and it found the following in which I had quarantined:

I still couldn't access IE7 and so I went online to find a solution and ran hijackthis and removed a browser helper object from yahoo and I guess that worked because IE7 began to work. I also have a registry optimizer (ARO) that I had used but I there is an error with that and it didn't fix anything so I installed a free one and as it was scanning when it got to the program shortcuts it found over 180 errors and I didn't completely trust that so I just cancelled the scan and didn't do anything else. I also have a log from avast that lists files that it was unable to do anything with as follows:

Since IE7 seems to work now, should I still do the online scan? Sorry for being such a pain in the A .... I just am in panic mode because my PC is how I make my living... thanks so much

Yes, do the online scan (either Kaspersky online scan or the Bit Defender Online scan.) and post the results of the online scan.

Do NOT download, install and run antivirus programs on you own while I am helping you.
