Here's the situation:
Starting a month ago, I discovered I had a major virus problem.
Here's the background.
I have a year old Thinkpad T60 running Windows XP Pro. I had Symantec antivirus software, however, the software was apparently very out of date.
I began getting lots of random popups from IE when on Firefox. Computer was running VERY slow.

1) I got rid of all Symantec software and downloaded AVG and Windows Defender.
2) Using msconfig, I went through all programs. I looked up my processes and got it down from 95 to 65 (still high, I know)
3) I used a registry cleaner and a defragger, as well as many other anti-spyware scanners recommended by a friend. Did not keep them on the computer, just scanned, removed, then uninstalled.
4) I discovered I had the virtumonde virus. Nothing was removing it. I used vundofix.exe and another virtumonde removal program. Still had problems, however way less popups.
5) I have not been getting any of the weird popups the last couple of days.
6) I discovered there was a process always running that regenerates whenever you end it. This process came up with no results when i googled it. When ended, my antivirus software would come up with a "Win32 Browser Modifier Fotomoto" warning, but could never delete it.
7) I deleted that process using ms-dos commands in safe mode.
8) I ran AVG in safe mode and in regular mode it found nothing. I ran windows defender and it found Trojan Conhook which it has not found since 9/10/07. However, in the past windows defender frequently finds the same two viruses: a trojan bho.aky and a trojan lop

Please be very specific with your instructions, I'm not computer saavy, I'm still learning as I go.
Thank you so much for your help

As you can see, I made a few changes, however there's still an extremely suspicious rundll32.exe process running - I can't end it and don't know what it is.

Hi lmarconi,

however there's still an extremely suspicious rundll32.exe process running - I can't end it and don't know what it is.

http://www.liutilities.com/products/wintas...brary/rundll32/

rundll32.exe is a process which executes DLL's and places their libraries into the memory, so they can be used more efficiently by applications. This program is important for the stable and secure running of your computer and should not be terminated.

Just to put your mind at rest, we will do a virus scan on it.

Go to My Computer and double-click C.
Go to the Tools menu and select 'Folder Options'.
On the 'View' tab select 'show hidden files and folders',
deselect (uncheck) 'hide protected operating system files (recommended)', and
deselect (uncheck) "Hide extensions for known file types.'

Go to next site: http://www.virustotal.com/en/indexf.html
On top you'll find 'Browse'
Click the browse button and browse to next file:

C:\WINDOWS\system32\rundll32.exe

Click open.
Then click the 'Send' button next to it.
This will scan the file. Please be patient.
Save the results in notepad.
Once scanned, copy and paste the results also in your next reply.

NOTE: I usually enter my email address at virus total so they can send me the scan results. They usually only take a couple minutes to reply.
You can copy/paste the results of scan results here.

*******************************************

I see Viewpoint installed.

Viewpoint Manager is considered as foistware instead of malware since it is installed without users approval but doesn't spy or do anything "bad".

This will change from what we know in 2006 read this article: http://www.clickz.com/news/article.php/3561546

I suggest you remove the program now, if you did not install it.

Go to Start > Settings > Control Panel > Add/Remove Programs and remove the following programs if present.

Viewpoint
Viewpoint Manager
Viewpoint Media Player

If you uninstalled, please navigate to and delete the following folders
C:\Program Files\Viewpoint

Reboot your computer.

*******************************************

Your Java is out of date. Older versions have vulnerabilities that malware can use to infect your system. Please follow these steps to remove older version Java components and update.

Updating Java:
  • Download the latest version of Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6 Update 3.
  • Scroll down to where it says "Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6 Update 3".
  • Click the "Download" button to the right.
  • Check the box that says: "Accept License Agreement".
  • The page will refresh.
  • Click on the link to download Windows Offline Installation, Multi-language jre-6-windows-i586.exe and save to your desktop.
  • Close any programs you may have running - especially your web browser.
  • Go to Start > Control Panel double-click on Add/Remove programs and remove all older versions of Java.
Examples of older versions in Add or Remove Programs:
Java 2 Runtime Environment, SE v1.4.2

  • Then from your desktop double-click on jre-6u3-windows-i586-p.exe to install the newest version.
*******************************************

Download CCleaner and install it. (default location is best). Do not run it yet!

CCleaner Tutorial

*******************************************

Select the following with HijackThis.
With all windows (including this one!) closed (close browser/explorer windows), please select "fix checked"

O20 - Winlogon Notify: ACNotify - ACNotify.dll (file missing)

*******************************************

*NOTE* CCleaner deletes EVERYTHING out of temp/temporary folders and does not make backups.

Let's empty the temp files:

Run CCleaner.

CAUTION: Please do NOT use the Issues or Registry button. This is a built-in registry cleaner. If you don't know how to use it, you may cause irreparable damage to your system.

1. Starting with v1.27.260, CCleaner installs the Yahoo Toolbar as an option which IS checkmarked by default during the installation.
IF you do NOT want it, REMOVE the checkmark when provided with the option OR download the toolbarfree Basic version instead of the Standard Build.

2. Before first use, select Options > Advanced and UNCHECK "Only delete files in Windows Temp folder older than 48 hours"

3. Then select the items you wish to clean up.

In the Windows Tab:
Clean all entries in the "Internet Explorer" section except Cookies.
Clean all the entries in the "Windows Explorer" section.
Clean all entries in the "System" section except for Start Menu Shortcuts and Menu Shortcuts.
Clean all entries in the "Advanced" section.
Clean any others that you choose.

In the Applications Tab:
Clean all except cookies in the Firefox/Mozilla section if you use it.
Clean all in the Opera section if you use it.
Clean Sun Java in the Internet Section.
Clean any others that you choose.

4. Click the "Run Cleaner" button.
5. A pop up box will appear advising this process will permanently delete files from your system.
6. Click "OK" and it will scan and clean your system.
7. Click "exit" when done.

If it asks you to reboot at the end, click NO.

CCleaner should be run with the above settings for each User Account!

*******************************************

Reboot your computer

If you have used Combofix before, please delete the version you are having and redownload it again, because Combofix is being updated everyday.

If your Antivirus or any other realtime scanner is displaying an alert after you downloaded Combofix or while you use Combofix, please disable your scanner and redownload Combofix again. Because some scanners may see some combofix related components as suspicious and block or delete them while there's nothing wrong with them.

1. Download this file - combofix.exe to your Desktop.
Note:
It is important that it is saved directly to your desktop

2. Double click combofix.exe & follow the prompts.
3. When finished, it shall produce a log for you, C:\ComboFix.txt. Post the ComboFix log, the results of the Virus Total scan, and a fresh Hijackthis log in your next reply.
Do NOT post the ComboFix-quarantined-files.txt - unless I ask you to.

Note:
Do not mouseclick combofix's window while it's running. That may cause it to stall

Hi lmarconi,

I also have in my C: drive folder tons and tons of folders with names like
dfj0ufd90a7fdaf0a7f0dauf9dd89y. Is that ok or is that leftovers from the virus?

Nothing to do with a virus.

msiexec.exe belongs to the Windows Installer Component and is used to install new programs that use Windows Installer package files (MSI).
msiexec.exe creates temporary folders named similar to yours: dfj0ufd90a7fdaf0a7f0dauf9dd89y It usually cleans up after itself when done with Windows Update, but not always.

Go ahead and delete the folder dfj0ufd90a7fdaf0a7f0dauf9dd89y as it was to be used temporarily only.

Open notepad - don't use any other text editor than notepad or the script will fail.
Copy/paste the text in the code box below into notepad:

File::
C:\WINDOWS\system32\ybadd.bak1
C:\WINDOWS\system32\ybadd.ini2
C:\WINDOWS\system32\ybadd.bak2

Registry::
[-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\software\microsoft\shared tools\msconfig\startupreg\SearchIndexer]

Name the Notepad file CFScript.txt and Save it to your desktop.

Then drag the CFScript into ComboFix.exe as you see in the screenshot below.

Hi lmarconi,

Your log looks clean! Good job on the cleanup!

Uninstall ComboFix, go to to Start > Run & type in ComboFix /u

Let's reset you files so they are hidden and protected.
Open My Computer.
Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options.
Select the View Tab.
Under the Hidden files and folders heading deselect Show hidden files and folders.
Check the Hide protected operating system files (recommended) option.
Click Yes to confirm.
Click OK

Let's clean your System Restore points and set a new one:

Reset and Re-enable your System Restore to remove infected files that have been backed up by Windows.
The files in System Restore are protected to prevent any programs from changing those files.
This is the only way to clean these files: (You will lose all previous restore points which are likely to be infected)

1. Turn off System Restore.

On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
Check Turn off System Restore.
Click Apply, and then click OK

2. Restart your computer.

3. Turn ON System Restore.

On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
UN-Check Turn off System Restore.
Click Apply, and then click OK.
NOTE: only do this ONCE, NOT on a regular basis

System Restore will now be active again.

Thank you for everything!
My computer runs ten times faster than it ever has, my processes are way down, and best of all, I'm not petrified to do my online banking!
Thanks!!!
