Hi, I'm new here but I really need some help. I somehow acquired the Home Search Assistent, Search Extender, Shopping Wizard terribleness. I have Ad-Aware, Spybot, Symantec anti-virus, and by recommendation the new Microsoft Antispy beta version (which is actually really good). Nothing seems to help. As I have tried to do some research on this hijacker a bit I know it is more controlling on internet explorer and I now have Mozilla firefox which is controlling the hijacker a bit better (but I still would like it off my computer). I also downloaded something that was supposed to fix it; and it did, in safe mode, but once I restarted it came back. I also recently noticed that I have ALOT of .exe programs on my computer but I have no idea what they're doing. I'm not very computer savy, and I really hope someone can help. Sorry this is so long. Thanks in advance. My hijackthis file is below.

~Pam

Thanks for sending your HijackThis log.

The 'Home Search Assistent' infection is also known as CWS About:Blank. Your system shows it is partially removed, which usually means re-infections, since the different parts of this beast will notice a partial removal and reinstall the missing files.

So, please do the following data gathering for me, and send the results in a reply to this message. Then do not reboot until I respond with fix instructions.

It will take several messages to get your system cleaned aout and repaired.

To start...

1 -- This step checks for a service that is part of CWS About:Blank:
  • Download Service Filter
  • Extract it to it's own folder.
  • Click on ServiceFilter.vbs
  • A text file called POST_THIS will be created in the same folder
  • Please use 'Edit>Select All' then 'Edit>Copy' to obtain the contents
  • Please Paste them into this thread using 'Add Reply'.
Once we identify the service, I will follow up with the next set of instructions for knocking down the About:Blank infection.

2 -- Run HijackThis and create a fresh logfile.

Send both logs back to me in a reply.

I'll get an email when you do that, and will follow up with the main fix instructions.

Thanks
daveai
