I back up my computer basically by copying the My Documents folder onto a separate hard drive. This takes about 30 minutes. Can I keep surfing while doing this? I have my Outlook files stored in the My Documents folder. So they are backed up, too. Can I keep sending and receiving or must I close outlook? I think I can keep surfing but the copying to the backup harddrive will be slowed down as will the surfing. So should I just close everything?

In a word, well two words actually: surf away.

You may surf, certainly, although this might slow the backup process somewhat. However, I would not download any files into folders that you are backing up, such as your Outlook inbox.
Ideally, the safest procedure would be to schedule any backup during a "down time" for your computer.
