I have been having problems with my computer for a couple weeks now. I have done every scan listed and these are my end results! There is a Windows antivirus pop up coming from a yellow triangle with an ! in it, coming from the bottom right list of programs. It has been up since the beginning.. can anyone help? Thank you!

Hello there and welcome to Bleeping Computer's security forum.
My name is David, I will be helping you with your log today.

It is a good idea to print off these instructions. There is a possibility some of the instructions will need to be carried out where internet access is not available. It is important that you complete the instructions in the right order, and that you don't miss out any steps.

Your system is terribly infected. The problem with these infections nowadays is, it causes a lot of damage. Even if we clean the malware off your system, I can't guarantee that your system will be clean afterwards, because these infections/bundles leave a lot of leftovers behind that most scanners won't even recognise and logs won't show. Also, I can't promise you we can repair all the damage it caused... Even after cleaning the malware, you can still get errors afterwards because of the damage. Solving these is not always possible since it will be searching for a needle in a haystack to find the right cause and solution. So, we can try to clean this up and do what we can, but keep in mind that we can't solve ALL problems this malware already caused.

Due to the status of some of the files you have on your computer, I strongly recommend that you do the following immediately. Disconnect the infected computer from the internet until the computer can be cleaned. From a clean computer, change all your online passwords-- for email, for banks, eBay, forums etc.... Do not change passwords or do any transactions while using the infected computer because the attacker may get the new passwords and transaction information.

Start HijackThis, close all open windows leaving only HijackThis running. Place a check against each of the following if still present:

R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Bar = http://mysearch.myway.com/jsp/dellsidebar.jsp?p=DE

Click on Fix Checked when finished and exit HijackThis.
Make sure your Internet Explorer is closed when you click Fix Checked!

Now reboot into Safe Mode.
This can be done tapping the F8 key as soon as you start your computer
You will be brought to a menu where you can choose to boot into safe mode.
Make sure you choose the option without networking support.

Using Windows Explorer, please locate the following files/folders, and delete them if still present:

C:\WINDOWS\shell.exe
C:\WINDOWS\system32\spoolvs.exe <--be careful with the spelling!

I want you to clean your cache and cookies from your internet explorer.
There are a few infected files which need to be removed from your system.

Close all instances of Internet Explorer .
Go to your control panel and open "Internet Options".
Click on the "General" tab.
Click the "Delete Cookies" button, then the "Delete Files" button.
If prompted, place a tick in the "Delete all offline content" box and click OK.

Also, please clean other Temporary files and Empty the Recycle Bin

Go to start and click on the "run" button.
Type the following in the box --> cleanmgr and click ok.
Let it scan your system for files to remove.
Make sure only Temporary Files, Temporary Internet Files, and Recycle Bin are checked.
Press OK to remove them.

Please download Combofix to your desktop.
Doubleclick combofix.exe to launch the application.

Follow the prompts that will be displayed on the screen.
Don't click on the window while the fix is running, because that will cause your system to hang.
When finished, it should produce a log, combofix.txt.
Post this log in your next reply together with a new hijackthislog.

It will not let me delete shell.exe it says " Access Denied. Check to see if program is in use or make sure disk is not full".. something of that sort.

Also, when I try to gain access to the Add/Remove programs, it will not allow me. In Safe Mode I see an Administrator login as well as mine. I went into the Administrator one and I then saw Control Panel, my Login does not have a control panel and I thought that mine was the administrator? Either way, when I try to gain access to the Control Panel or Add/Remove programs it says "This operation has been cancelled due to the restrictions in effect on this computer. Please contact your system administrator" ????

If I cannot get rid of this damage, what do I do? Can I have my system restored somehow and fixed?
Thank you so much for your help!

Can I have my system restored somehow and fixed?

This system really is in a mess, the best thing to do would be to reformat.

Though the backdoors can be identified and can be killed, because of it's functionality, your PC is compromised and there is no way to be sure your computer can ever again be trusted. Many experts in the security community believe that once infected with this type of malware, the best course of action would be a reformat and reinstall of the OS.
I think I would definately recommend that you reformat and start afresh with a PC you can trust.

Please read these for more information:

http://www.dslreports.com/faq/10451 - How Do I Handle Possible Identify Theft, Internet Fraud and CC Fraud?
http://www.dslreports.com/faq/10063 - When Should I Format, How Should I Reinstall?

Let me know what you wish to do - I understand that sometimes with this kind of topic, you might wish not to reformat as you want to keep all your files and do not want the inconvenience of starting afresh, but as I said before it's a good idea to start afresh - Don't forget all your files/folders can be backed-up onto a disc/USB drive.

Let me know what you want to do.

I think I want to start fresh. I called a family member who works with computers to see if he can help with the re-format.

Do I need to back up EVERYTHING I want to re-install on the computer? How do I know if it is safe to re-install? Will I have to buy Windows XP again to install in the computer? Can the programs on the computer such as Microsoft Office/Word and my anti-virus programs be saved?

I am sorry for all of these question, I am just a litle illerate when it comes to some of the technical computer things.
What causes this type of infection? I have had this computer for a few years and never had any problems!! I just wan to make sure that this does not happen again, is there any way to prevent it?

Thank you again!!!

No worry about asking questions, that's what I'm here for.

Basically, when you reformat, it will wipe everything installed on the hard-drive, then reinstall the operating system. This will mean that all external programs will be lost, and all documents will be wiped. Things like programs you don't need to backup, you simply need to download them and reinstall them on the freshly installed operating system. Things like music, documents and pictures will be wiped, so you need to back them up onto a USB stick, CDs, DVDs etc..

As long as you have the XP operating system CD that came when you bought the PC, you will not need to buy XP again.
Programs such as Microsoft Office will be wiped, you should have a CD that came with the computer package, or if you bought it separately.
Antivirus programs will also be wiped, you will need to download them again, and reinstall them.

These type of infections normally come bundled with applications that you might install without checking them out first, for example audio/movie codecs that you are prompted to install from dodgy websites. Another big source of infection is P2P file sharing, where a large number of files that are available to download are simply trojan downloaders and installers etc. Finally, crack sites providing serials and keygens to "crack" open applications you need to pay for, are the worst for this. Nearly every crack site has malicious code waiting to be injected into your system.

I hope this helps..
