I've been working on this for a few days, and haven't gotten very far. I've followed the tutorial under forums/topict3341.html, but when i reboot from safe mode everything comes back. Initially it looked like a variant on the home search assistant, only the best, etc.. but I'm also having problems with misc dialers, and now my browser redirects to a searchmiracle site, and get various search pop-ups, side bars etc... When I first log on I routinely get a pop up saying "Is your system infect with spyware?"

Following the tutorial, everything seems to go well, but I can't find most of the suspicious exe. to delete from windows or windows/system32. The exe. that the service (NSS) that's been installed points to can't be found either, when I go to delete it.

Here's the most recent HJT log, right after I rebooted from safe mode... Thanks for the help... I can't take much more!

Hello and welcome to BleepingComputer Forums. We hope you enjoy your stay here!

You may want to print out these instructions or save them to your desktop as a text file with Notepad because we will be restarting into Safe Mode later on in the fix and you might not be able to access the Internet.

Place a checkmark next to these entries, close all browsers and windows, and have HijackThis fix them by clicking Fix Checked:

Reconfigure Windows XP to show hidden files:
Click Start. Open My Computer.
Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options. Select the View Tab.

Under the Hidden files and folders heading select "Show hidden files and folders".
Uncheck the "Hide protected operating system files (recommended)" option.
Uncheck the "Hide file extensions for known file types" option.
Click Yes to confirm. Click OK.

Boot into Safe Mode:
Restart your computer and immediately begin tapping the F8 key on your keyboard.
If done right a Windows Advanced Options menu will appear. Select the Safe Mode option and press Enter.
To return to normal mode just restart your computer as you normally would.

Please delete these folders using Windows Explorer(if present):

C:\WINDOWS\EliteSideBar
C:\WINDOWS\EliteToolBar

Please delete these files using Windows Explorer(if present):

C:\dddd.exe
C:\WINDOWS\System32\boln.dll
C:\WINDOWS\System32\dddd.exe
c:\windows\system32\elitesyl32.exe

Now you can restart the computer normally.
Please run HijackThis again and post a fresh log, just so I can make sure that all the malware was deleted according to plan. :flowers:

Well things are finally looking up! Prior to your reply I did pretty much what you outlined, and upon reboot in normal mode everything looked to be OK. I was able to find the exe that the installed service (NSS) pointed to, and now the service doesn't show at all under adminstrative tools/services..

About 15-20 minutes into the reboot though, while running an online virus scan and emptying my recycle bin, everything started up again.

I ran through the process one more time, and think I might of missed some exe's that started it up again. So far no more problems...

Here's my most recent HJT log.

Spoke to soon, upon reboot and my friends back.

Reinstalled Spybot after I thought everything was fixed, and i got a series of pop-ups when I rebooted alerting me to the changes that took place ... I had an option to stop some of them which i think was partially successful.

Here's an updated HJT log that looks very similar to the first one..

Download: http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/files/spyware/imm_mh4.zip
Unzip it to a folder (it will make it's own subfolder there called imm_mh4)
Double click on the runme.bat in that folder and it should produce a MH4_Look.log file.
If it fails - reextract and try again. Post (paste) the MH4_Look.log file to this post.

If the other log file it makes (MH4_err.log) has contents then please also post that.

Dam! Just got done with a lengthy reply and right as i was about to post my browser crashed.

I'll make this one short.. below is what log i came up with from your link. It did fail after multiple extractions, running the bat created another exe that i was able to pull a log from... not sure if this is what your looking for. Also attached is the error log. i left off the last couple hundred lines which seems to be some numerical code.

prior to your post i ran through everything again in safe mode...

hjt, deleted suspicious files, went to windows and system 32 folders and manaully deleted all traces of files and folders. then ran ad-aware, spybot, spysubtract, cwshredder, and buster, and deleted all problems. before rebooting in normal mode I also dumped all temp internet files, history, recycle bin etc..

immediately upon reboot in normal mode everything came back, and spybots tea timer notified me as the changes took place.

Now in addition to all that bleep, I have a some sort of active desktop webpage that took over my desktop, alerting me that I am in danger (duh!) with a link to a page to fix.. I tried changing my desk top settings but to no avail... could delete the page it points to, but then it just comes up blank. It must be associated with explorer.exe, but only when i stop that process does my normal desktop come back.

As i stated in the beginning its also causing my browser to unexpectedly crash. Unfortunately right after I posted a much more detailed reply than this!

Here's my most recent HJT log as well, although not much different from previous versions...

Thanks again for you help, and thanks in advance for your patience. I have a feeling this is going to be a battle...

This infection is very new so stick with me.

We need to collect some more logs first.
  • Go to the Control Panel and double-click on Display.
  • If not already selected, go to the Desktop tab.
  • Click Customize Desktop... and then go to Web tab.
  • Click on the Security or similar entry and click Delete to remove the entry.
  • This should get rid of the advertisement on your desktop.
Download http://www.downloads.subratam.org/pv.zip and unzip it to the desktop.

Run runme.bat.
Type 1 and hit <ENTER>.
Copy/Paste the log that will appear to your next post.
Type 2 and hit <ENTER>.
Copy/Paste this log to your next post also.
  • Open HijackThis.
  • Click "Config...".
  • Click "Misc Tools".
  • In the "StartupList (integrated: v1.52)" section check these boxes:
    • "List also minor sections (full)"
    • "List empty sections (complete)"
  • Now click "Generate StartupList log".
  • Choose "Yes" at the StartupList prompt to continue.
  • A Notepad window will open and display startuplist.txt.
  • Copy the contents of this text file and paste them into your next post.
  • Download DLLCompare.
  • Double-click on DllCompare.exe to run the program.
  • Click "Run Locate.com" and it will scan your system for files.
  • Once the scan has finished click "Compare" to compare your files to valid Windows files.
  • Once it has finished comparing click "Make a Log of what was found".
  • Click "Yes" at the View Log file? prompt to view the log.
  • Copy and paste the entire log into this topic.
  • If you accidentally close out of the log it is also saved as log.txt to where you saved DllCompare.exe.
  • Click "Exit" to exit DLLCompare.

active web page is gone for now, and since its gone things have quieted down.

However when i first logged on, I had an actual bogus program pop up called 'power scan', and it also now lists an exe in my programs folder in the start menu. Initally I thought it was a well crafted pop-up. So of course i clicked on the scan button out of curiousity  , and it actually started running a scan with dummy results showing these off the wall infections! Of course I only ran it a few seconds, and shut it down, and then doubled checked the folders it referenced just to be sure nothing got planted... Scary to think what would happen if ran through to completion :flowers: .

Anyway looks like you'll have some homework as there's quite a few logs below.

I truly appreciated the time your taking to help me out, I'll stick around as long as it will take.

log 1 from pv/runme.bat

Heres the end of the HJT startuplist.log that looked to be cut off from my last post. i cut it from the 'enumerating windows' section on to the end. Right as I went to submit my post it hit hard again and crashed my browser. I swear it knows what we're up to.

I downloaded the firefox browser and it seems to have stayed much more stable to at least allow me to post w/out as many problems. Hope the change doesn't throw a wrench in your plan.

Also posted is the dll compare.log which also seemed to get clipped off the last post.

Kaspersky has supposedly released and update that will clean the infector and most of other junk as well.

www.kaspersky.com/index.html

Download the trial version KAV 5.0 personal, install, update the definitions, set it up to use extended databases and then do a full system scan.

Run HiJackThis after and post the log in this thread.

the saga continues.... I can't get to the kaspersky site. While on the the infected PC fire fox says the connection to the page was not allowed? I'm not too familiar with the settings on firefox since I just starting using it, but after looking around i couldn't find anything that would seem to cause a problem.

If I try from IE i keep getting re-directed to misc. search pages, or it comes up the site is unavailable. Funny thing is though, it's only when I try to go to the kaspersky site. Even different links from search pages to the kaspersky site won't work, so it's not just an address bar thing. Any other site I type, or paste into the address bar works fine. This has got me way paranoid by now.... I'm starting to think it knows i found it's kryptonite..

It was only a half hour ago that i got this post at work and logged on fine to look around at the kaspersky site... i guess the site could of went down with in that time period?

Any suggestions?

ftp://downloads-us2l.kaspersky-labs.com/t...sonalpro_en.exe

Try that direct download to the trial version instead.

Then please download the MWAV tool from here:
ftp://ftp.microworldsystems.com/download/tools/mwav.exe
Save it to the desktop, run a full scan with it, and please post a list of all infected files found.

ran kaspersky finally, and found quite a bit, many duplicates, but a few that seemed related to my problem.

However when i went to fix all, it crashed pretty hard just a few seconds in. Said something about not be able to fix one, and then I got a pop up asking for the windows xp cd, that a system file was missing.

I had to shut down the scan... I ran the mwav.exe and noticed much of the same coming up so stopped it w/ plans to reboot... For the heck of it I ran HJT, and did the normal fixes.... and when I rescanned NOTHING CAME BACK! i went on to run other various scans, ad-aware, buster, spybot, etc... dumped the few things i found, and still nothing...

Right now I can't open kaspersky... it just opens in the tray but remains greyed out, can't right click to open....

I'm dying to reboot to see what happens, and to run kaspersky again to try and clear the rest out..

Also IE won't start up for me, I was going to run some online scans but can't get IE going.

Here's my latest HJT log

I guess you realized this from the beginning but I've had all my start up items disabled thru msconfig, of course as the infection reloaded, the msconfig start up would continually add the elite**exe, ddd.exe, boln.dll, etc..

right now my running processes are staying clean, and no signs of any problems.

In msconfig all those start up items are still there, just not checked...

I see you just went back off line so I'll go back and run thru mwav completely and post so you could see what's still going on.

I don't plan on rebooting till I hear back....

Could this be it?
