Hello all,

I'm having lots of trouble with my computer. I've cleared some trojans (Rustock) with Super anti spyware; I've also found some other less dangerous stuff with Ad-aware and Spybot. Now neither of these see anything wrong, nor does Stinger.

I've rebooted numerous times, but still after some time the computer's been on I'm unable to start applications (firefox, word, anything really), to open task manager, or to shutdown -- although apps that are already open keep working.

I cannot run an online scan properly because it freezes before the scan ends (both housecall and Panda did this).

I don't know what to do anymore, and would be very grateful for any help you might have.

Here is my log:

Hello Johannes, and don't worry about the delay -- I'm just glad to have someone help me. The symptoms are still the same -- applications refusing to open if I wait some time after reboot. They appear to work fine otherwise. I can't shut down through the menu or start task manager after some time either. Startup is slower than usual.

AdAware, Superantispyware, and SpyBot have stopped finding problems, and I cannot run online scans for the problem I mentioned in my first post; they simply freeze when left alone.

Anyway, here is a new HJT log as requested:

Hi el_maracumbe,

Step #1

I do not recommend that you have more than one anti virus product installed and running on your computer at a time. The reason for this is that if both products have their automatic (Real-Time) protection switched on, then those products which do not encrypt the virus strings within them can cause other anti virus products to cause "false alarms". It can also lead to a clash as both products fight for access to files which are opened again this is the resident/automatic protection. In general terms, the two programs may conflict and cause:
  • False Alarms: When the anti virus software tells you that your PC has a virus when it actually doesn't.
  • System Performance Problems: Your system may lock up due to both software products attempting to access the same file at the same time.
Therefore please go to add/remove in the control panel and remove two of the following: NOD32, AVG Anti-virus or Network Associates.

Step #2

It is important that you use a software firewall, to prevent unauthorised traffic both out of and into your computer.
Your log doesn't show a firewall running. If you have disabled it, please re-enable it.
If you do not have a firewall installed, please download and install one of these excellent (and free) products:If you want to have a look at the user manuals for the above suggested programs, have a look at the following:Step #3

These lines in your log:
C:\Program Files\Hewlett-Packard\Toolbox2.0\Javasoft\JRE\1.3.1\bin\javaw.exe
O2 - BHO: SSVHelper Class - {761497BB-D6F0-462C-B6EB-D4DAF1D92D43} - C:\Program Files\Java\jre1.6.0_01\bin\ssv.dll
tell me that you have two versions of Java on your machine and that both of your Java versions are out of date. Older versions have vulnerabilities that malware can use to infect your system. A malicious site could render Java content under older, vulnerable versions of Sun's software if the user has not removed them. Please follow these steps to remove older version Java components and update:
  • Download the latest version of Java Runtime Environment (JRE) and save it to your desktop.
  • Scroll down to where it says "Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6u3...allows end-users to run Java applications".
  • Click the "Download" button to the right.
  • Read the License Agreement and then check the box that says: "Accept License Agreement".
  • The page will refresh.
  • Click on the link to download Windows Offline Installation and save the file to your desktop.
  • Close any programs you may have running - especially your web browser.
  • Go to Start > Settings > Control Panel, double-click on Add/Remove Programs and remove all older versions of Java.
  • Check (highlight) any item with Java Runtime Environment (JRE or J2SE) in the name.
  • Click the Remove or Change/Remove button.
  • Repeat as many times as necessary to remove each Java versions.
  • Reboot your computer once all Java components are removed.
  • Then from your desktop double-click on jre-6u3-windows-i586-p.exe to install the newest version.
Step #4

I also noticed that you have various anti-spyware programmes running. While this in itself is not entirely bad, I do not recommend it. Some of them come with what is called a "guard" to protect your surfing. Having two of those can create conflicts and thence problems. We can and should look into this later on too.

Step #5

For now lets do this:

Run HijackThis, press Scan, and put a check mark next to all these entries:

O2 - BHO: (no name) - {E6EAC856-7CA4-4BA0-8344-FCF7DAF99CA2} - (no file)
O16 - DPF: {9A9307A0-7DA4-4DAF-B042-5009F29E09E1} (ActiveScan Installer Class) - http://acs.pandasoftware.com/activescan/as5free/asinst.cab

Close all other windows and browsers, and press the Fix Checked button.

Step #6

* Clean your Cache and Cookies in InternetExplorer:
  • Close all instances of Outlook Express and Internet Explorer
  • Go to Control Panel > Internet Options > General tab
  • Click the "Delete Cookies" button
  • Next to it, Click the "Delete Files" button
  • When prompted, place a check in: "Delete all offline content", click OK
* Clean your Cache and Cookies in Firefox (In case you also have Firefox installed):
  • Go to Tools > Options.
  • Click Privacy in the menu on the left side of the Options window.
  • Click the Clear button located to the right of each option (History, Cookies, Cache).
  • Click OK to close the Options window
Alternatively, you can clear all information stored while browsing by clicking Clear All.
A confirmation dialog box will be shown before clearing the information.
* Clean other Temporary files + Recycle bin
  • Go to start > run and type: cleanmgr and click ok.
  • Let it scan your system for files to remove.
  • Make sure Temporary Files, Temporary Internet Files, and Recycle Bin are the only things checked.
  • Press OK to remove them.
Step #7

Last but not least, please do the following:
  • Start HiJackThis
  • Press 'Config'
  • Press 'Misc Tools'
  • Press 'Open Uninstall Manager'
  • Press 'Save List'
  • Save the log to a convenient location
Now please post back with a fresh HijackThis log and the just created Uninstall list.

Thanks

please be informed that I changed the text above to reflect the latest java update available: "Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6u3"
It is vital that you are always downloading the latest version.

Thanks.

Dear Johannes, thanks for your help -- here is what I have been able to do:

Step 1 - antivirus

I removed AVG a long time ago, as well as McAfee (Network associates). They are not found in add/remove. When I go to C > Program files there is no AVG folder, so I presume it's been deleted. There is however a Network associates folder, but it has no uninstall file in it.

Step 2 - Firewall

I checked my connection and Microsoft firewall looks to be up and running. Do I need an extra firewall, or is that sufficient? Strange that it wouldn't show in the log.

Step 3 - Update Java

Done, without problems.

Step 4 - anti-spyware

Ok, I'll wait for your instructions

Hey El_maracumbe,

sorry for the delay. I even managed to confuse days. I thought Wednesday was Thursday, so this should now have gotten to you earlier than announced  . Oh and thanks, the movie was good. Went to friends Thursday and saw Spiderman 3 and it was horrible  . Thanks for posting everything. Now to your logs and comments.

Step #1

I removed AVG a long time ago, as well as McAfee (Network associates). They are not found in add/remove. When I go to C > Program files there is no AVG folder, so I presume it's been deleted. There is however a Network associates folder, but it has no uninstall file in it.

If you have uninstalled Network associates, then you are safe to delete that folder.

I checked my connection and Microsoft firewall looks to be up and running. Do I need an extra firewall, or is that sufficient? Strange that it wouldn't show in the log.

I know that firewalls can be a hassle for some games and other programs, but please consider for a second what is more annoying to you - the recurring task of having to clean up your machine of an infection due to lack of protection, or having to train your firewall once for future prevention of being infected again. Considering, that you might even have to change all your passwords in the worst-case scenario, I just personally think that the latter is the best option.

The Windows firewall is better than nothing, but doesn't monitor outgoing packets very well. A third party firewall will bug you with a lot of deny or allow questions for a while, but you should be able to tell it to remember your decision so after about a week or so you will rarely be asked for a decision. It's up to you, I just think you should really give it a try. For a bit more on the firewall thing, have a read here: http://www.us-cert.gov/cas/tips/ST04-004.html.

Step #2

I see you have got Acrobat Reader installed on your system. Their newest version is up to 8.1 so you might want to uninstall your copy and its updates and install the current one.

The following is referring to CCleaner, Uniblue RegistryBooster 2 and Advanced Registry Doctor.
Please be aware that bleepingcomputer staff do not recommend the usage of registry cleaners / tools due to the following facts:
  • Registry tools can cause irreparable damage to your Operating System
  • Registry tools can, as a result of the above, render your pc to be inoperable.
This is done, assuming that the major audience here at this board might be inexperienced users and thus a suggested safeguard from our side. If you feel you have the need for a registry cleaner, then you are just as welcome to keep it. This is what we refer to an "optional fix" and is up to the user, so just take this as a recommendation from my side.

Click on start > run > and then paste the following into the "open" field: appwiz.cpl and press OK. From within Add or Remove Programs uninstall the following if they exist: Javaâ„¢ SE Runtime Environment 6 Update 1, Learn2 Player

Viewpoint Manager is considered as foistware instead of malware since it is installed without users approval but doesn't spy or do anything "bad". This changed from what we know in 2006 read this article: http://www.clickz.com/news/article.php/3561546

I suggest you remove the program now. Click on start > run > and then paste the following into the "open" field: appwiz.cpl and press OK. From within Add or Remove Programs uninstall the following if they exist: Viewpoint, Viewpoint Manager, Viewpoint Media Player.

Step #3

Run HijackThis, press Scan, and put a check mark next to all these entries:

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [McAfeeUpdaterUI] "C:\Program Files\Network Associates\Common Framework\UpdaterUI.exe" /StartedFromRunKey
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [AVG7_CC] C:\PROGRA~1\Grisoft\AVGFRE~1\avgcc.exe /STARTUP
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [AVG7_EMC] C:\PROGRA~1\Grisoft\AVGFRE~1\avgemc.exe

Close all other windows and browsers, and press the Fix Checked button.
Please note that the above AVG Entries suggest that AVG still exists on your pc. Since you wish to keep NOD32, please also delete the Grisoft folder after doing the above.

Step #4

Please do an online scan with Kaspersky Webscan (You need to use InternetExplorer or enable IEView in Firefox)

Click on Kaspersky Online Scanner

You will be promted to install an ActiveX component from Kaspersky, Click Yes.
  • The program will launch and then begin downloading the latest definition files:
  • Once the files have been downloaded click on NEXT
  • Now click on Scan Settings
  • In the scan settings make that the following are selected:
    • Scan using the following Anti-Virus database:
    Extended (if available otherwise Standard)
    • Scan Options:
    Scan Archives
    Scan Mail Bases
  • Click OK
  • Now under select a target to scan:Select My Computer
  • This will program will start and scan your system.
  • The scan will take a while so be patient and let it run.
  • Once the scan is complete it will display if your system has been infected.
    • Now click on the Save Report as button >> name it >> chose "Text file" in the Save as type dialogue
  • Save the file to your desktop.
  • Copy and paste that information in your next post.
Step #5

Please post back with the report from Kaspersky Online scan and a fresh HijackThis log.

Thanks.

Back in action!

Sorry you didn't enjoy the movie -- I've stopped going to see these hollywood productions altogether. In fact the best film I've seen recently was a German one...

Here is what I've done.

Step 1 - I tried to delete the folder even after rebooting, but unsuccessfully -- I am told that the file AgentRes.dll is in use.

I have downloaded and installed Outpost following your suggestion, but something may have gone wrong as I cannot see it now. I'll try that again.

Step 2 - I've deleted acrobat reader because I have acrobat 6 professional -- I will buy the new version soon. I only the newer reader because I couldn't open a certain file.

I take your point about registry cleaners -- I don't know what I'm doing so perhaps I should leave them alone.

I deleted the Java and Learn2 apps, as well as viewpoint.

I fixed the HJT entries you mentioned, and deleted the Grisoft folder (this time without trouble).

There appear to be a number of saved emails that contain viruses/trojans -- I imagine I should just delete emails in the junk folder etc. that contain attachments, to be safe, but I'll wait for your advice.

Forgot to add that when I rebooted a window titled 'engine' popped up, saying 'Error loading driver 1058'. I think it was something to do with McAfee (them again!) because I noticed the shield appear very briefly among the taskbar icons.

Hey El-maracumbe,

Step #1

There appear to be a number of saved emails that contain viruses/trojans -- I imagine I should just delete emails in the junk folder etc. that contain attachments, to be safe, but I'll wait for your advice.

Yes, please do so. The junk folder should be checked regularly to see if Thunderbird has flagged emails correctly and if none of your private mails have accidentally been moved there, should be deleted once a week or so.

Now, on to the fix.

Step #2

Please navigate to C:\Program Files\ESET\infected\ and delete all the files in this folder (it is your Antivirus's "Quarantine" folder)

Step #3

Please download SmitfraudFix (by S!Ri), alternate (with instructions as well) and extract the content (a folder named SmitfraudFix) to your Desktop.

Open the SmitfraudFix folder and double-click smitfraudfix.cmd
Select option #1 - Search by typing 1 and press "Enter"; a text file will appear, which lists infected files (if present).
Please copy/paste the content of that report into your next reply.

Note : process.exe is detected by some antivirus programs (AntiVir, Dr.Web, Kaspersky) as a "RiskTool"; it is not a virus, but a program used to stop system processes. Antivirus programs cannot distinguish between "good" and "malicious" use of such programs, therefore they may alert the user.
http://www.beyondlogic.org/consulting/proc...processutil.htm

Step #4

Run HijackThis, press Scan, and put a check mark next to all these entries:

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [McAfeeUpdaterUI] "C:\Program Files\Network Associates\Common Framework\UpdaterUI.exe" /StartedFromRunKey
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [AVG7_CC] C:\PROGRA~1\Grisoft\AVGFRE~1\avgcc.exe /STARTUP
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [AVG7_EMC] C:\PROGRA~1\Grisoft\AVGFRE~1\avgemc.exe
O23 - Service: McAfee Framework Service (McAfeeFramework) - McAfee, Inc. - C:\Program Files\Network Associates\Common Framework\FrameworkService.exe
O23 - Service: SymWMI Service (SymWSC) - Symantec Corporation - C:\Program Files\Common Files\Symantec Shared\Security Center\SymWSC.exe

Close all other windows and browsers, and press the Fix Checked button.

You should now also be able to delete the two folders. Please let me know if this is still not the case.

Step #5

Forgot to add that when I rebooted a window titled 'engine' popped up, saying 'Error loading driver 1058'. I think it was something to do with McAfee (them again!) because I noticed the shield appear very briefly among the taskbar icons.

Try those two links: http://www.outpostfirewall.com/forum/archive/index.php/t-5295.html and http://www.outpostfirewall.com/forum/showthread.php?threadid=3196. May be that helps.

Step #6

Please download ATF Cleaner by Atribune. (This program is for XP and Windows 2000 only)Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
Under Main "Select Files to Delete" choose: Select All.
Click the Empty Selected button.
If you use Firefox browserClick Firefox at the top and choose: Select All
Click the Empty Selected button.
NOTE: If you would like to keep your saved passwords, please click No at the prompt.
If you use Opera browserClick Opera at the top and choose: Select All
Click the Empty Selected button.
NOTE: If you would like to keep your saved passwords, please click No at the prompt.
Click Exit on the Main menu to close the program.
For Technical Support, double-click the e-mail address located at the bottom of each menu.

Step #7

Please scan once more with Kaspersky Online Scan and post the log here, along with a fresh HijackThis log, the Smitfraudfix log, and the above requested information.

Thanks.

Johannes -- just to let you know; I'm working on this. I've had a few things to take care of but I think I'll have more time today. Many thanks for your help so far. The computer appears to be working better already.

Step 4 - I did this four times, but the two McAfee entries reappear, and I'm unable to delete the Network Associates folder (AgentRes.dll is still the problem). AVG is gone, on the other hand.

Step 5 - It was outpost as you had guessed -- I uninstalled it and installed zonealarm and it's working much better for me.

Step 6 - Done.
