I seem to have found myself infected with every piece of spyware ever. I've run Adaware and Spybot and removed much of it, including Weatherbug, WildTangent, and some others. But I seem to have some happy self-replicating spyware. Specifically, Home Search Assistant, Search Extender, and Shopping Wizard, all of which, as near as I can tell, though I'm not too smart in the head, are part of CoolWebSearch. I'm also finding porn is being added to my favorite places, I'm getting the about: blank deal for my home page, my Google Toolbar is rather messed up, I can't simply go to a website without adding in www to the url, and I cannot send or receive IMs on AIM without it crashing.

I've used Hijack This before to fix my parents' computer with help from a similar message board before and I am reasonably sure of some of the items that I need to remove, but I'd rather not take any chances.

It's log, it's log, it's better than bad, it's good!

Thanks guys!

Hi Cantankerous,

Welcome to the forums.

You have a CoolWebSearch infestation. You'll have to download some free software to get rid of this.

Please download Ad-Aware SE from: http://www.lavasoft.de/support/download/
The personal version is free.
Install the program and launch it.

First, in the main window, look in the bottom right corner and click on Check for updates now and download the latest reference files. Once it has updated you can close the program, we will use it later.

I'd like you to download this free cleanup utility
http://cleanup.stevengould.org/
On the downloads page you will find CleanUp312.exe
Install this but do NOT run it yet.

I'd like you to download the standalone version of CWShredder
http://www.intermute.com/spysubtract/cwshr...r_download.html
Do NOT run it yet.

Please download About:Buster from here: http://www.downloads.subratam.org/AboutBuster.zip
Once it is downloaded, extract/unzip it to c:\aboutbuster.
Do NOT run it yet.

You may want to print this page or copy and paste it into Notepad. You will be offline for the duration of the fix.

Reboot, on restart, start in "Safe Mode".
How To
1. Restart the computer.
2. As the computer restarts, begin tapping the F8 key until the Windows XP startup menu appears.
3. Choose Safe mode from the startup menu, and then press Enter. Windows starts in Safe mode.

Show "Hidden files and folders".
How to
Click Start.
Open My Computer.
Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options.
Select the View Tab.
In the Advanced settings box, under the "Hidden files" folder, select Show hidden files and folders
Remove the check mark from "Hide protected operating system files (Recommended)".
Click Apply, and then click OK.

Select Start, Control Panel, Add/Remove Programs and remove the following if found
Internet Optimizer
Webrebates

Run HiJackThis, scan and place a check mark next to the following

I ran into a couple of minor issues. I was unable to download that CleanUp program, either because the site was down or because of my issues, I'm not sure which. And AboutBuster didn't work. I got Runtime Error 339 and it said MSCOMCTL.OCX was not correctly registered.

And I still think there are some items leftover in my Hijack This log, as my Google Toolbar still isn't working correctly.

I don't seem to be able to get rid of the cravewinnings entries. I did it twice and there are still two there.

I've also discovered that I no longer have access to my history in IE, though I think I'm going to ultimately resolve that by downloading FireFox.

Thanks again for all your help!

Hi Cantankerous,

You can follow this link to resolve the issues with MSCOMCTL.OCX

http://www.majorgeeks.com/faqshow.php?id=8

Once you've tried this, boot into Safe Mode as before, run HiJackThis and place a check mark next to the following and hit fix checked
O15 - Trusted Zone: *.frame.crazywinnings.com
O15 - Trusted Zone: *.frame.crazywinnings.com (HKLM)

Try running About:Buster. If it works, scan again with About:Buster.

Let me know how you get on.

Reboot and post a fresh HiJackThis log file.

Hi Cantankerous,

Sorry for the delay. I had no web access over the weekend.

Please download WinHelp2002's DelDomains by right-clicking on the following link, and choosing "Save Target As":
http://www.mvps.org/winhelp2002/DelDomains.inf
Save the file to the desktop. Then go to the desktop, right click on DelDomains.inf, and choose Install. You may not see any noticeable changes or prompts; this is normal.

Reboot. Run HiJackThis, scan and post a fresh logfile.

Hi Cantakerous,

One of the nice features of XP is the use of System Restore points. These allow you to go back to a time when the machine was working OK if something goes wrong. Loading the restore point may reload the hijack. You need to clean the sytem restore points

1. On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
2. Click Properties.
3. Click the System Restore tab.
4. Check Turn off System Restore.
5. Click Apply, and then click OK.
6. Restart the computer.

After rebooting, re-enable System Restore by repeating the above process. At point 4, turn on System Restore and name the point to something you will recognise.

You should keep Windows up to date with all of the latest Service Packs and patches.
http://www.microsoft.com/windows/downloads/default.mspx

Great job, your system looks clean.
