I have been battling pop ups for two weeks now. Even as I am posting to this forum I get
a few ads about Antivirus programs, nice scam.
Norton Antivirus generates pop ups telling me a Downloader Trojan was quaranteened.
Sometimes it tells me about Vundo being quarantinded, sometimes just a Trojan.
The files it quarantines are: valera, lkjh and bixurst.dll.
I scanned the disk and it never finds anything. It has the definition updates from 9/19/07.

I read your preparation guide and followed it to the letter. Most of the programs found and
removed Vundo and a whole bunch of registry items.
However, when I reboot after running one of these scans, the virus comes back.
I think I have a virus that keeps retrieving new ones. If I could kill that virus, then I would
know how to fix the rest.

Please help. I'd like to avoid reformatting and reloading the disk.
Thank you!

Welcome to the BleepingComputer HijackThis Logs and Analysis forum bower
My name is Richie and i'll be helping you to fix your problems.

Please move HijackThis.exe to its own permanent folder on the hard drive such as C:\HJT.
Create a new folder and place HijackThis.exe inside that folder so that the backups of log changes it creates are saved in the same folder and can be used to reverse any line entry deletion if found to be necessary.

How to create a new folder named HJT
1. Click Start/My Computer,in the 'My Computer' window, open the window in which you want to create the new folder, click on Local Disk C:
2. From the 'File' menu choose 'New'.
3. From the 'New' menu choose 'Folder'.
4. Type the folder name: HJT
5. Then press Enter.

If you need help with the above, follow the info in the link below:
http://russelltexas.com/malware/createhjtfolder.htm

*NOTE*
If you have previously downloaded ComboFix,please delete that version and download it again from below.

Download Combofix and save to your desktop:
Note:
It is important that it is saved directly to your desktop

Close any open browsers.
Double click on Combofix.exe and follow the prompts.
When it's finished it will produce a log.
Post the entire contents of C:\ComboFix.txt into your next reply.
Note:
Do not mouseclick combofix's window while it's running.
That may cause the program to freeze/hang.

Do NOT post the ComboFix-quarantined-files.txt unless I ask.

Now go to:
C:\HJT\HijackThis.exe
Right click on Hijackthis.exe and select 'Rename', rename it to abc.bat
Double click on abc.bat(which is still Hijackthis.exe),post that log into your next reply please.

Hello Richie. Thank you for the quick reply.
Here are logs from ComboFix anh HJT. I couldn't remember
what you told me to rename HJT, so I called it pinco.bat. I figured
this has to do with trojans hiding themselves from HJT.
Thanks for your time.

Please disable Spybot S&Dís protection,or it will interfere.
You can enable it after you're clean.
Open Spybot and click on 'Mode' and check 'Advanced Mode'.
Click on 'Tools' in bottom left hand corner.
Click on the 'System Startup' icon.
Uncheck 'Teatimer' box and/or uncheck 'Resident'.
Click the 'Allow Change' box.
Then, check next to the computer clock to see if the icon for Spybot is still there.
If it is, right click it and choose 'exit Spybot-S&D Resident'.
Reboot the computer.

If you find you're experiencing problems disabling Spybot's Tea-Timer,follow the info in the link below:
http://www.russelltexas.com/malware/teatimer.htm

Copy and paste ALL the following text in the Quote box below into Notepad.
Click on File(in the menu at the top)>Save as../Save as Type: 'All Files' /File name: CFScript to your desktop.

File::
C:\WINDOWS\system32\psfwijep.dll
C:\WINDOWS\system32\yucljjmw.dll
C:\DOCUME~1\GABRIE~1\STARTM~1\Programs\Startup\PowerReg Scheduler.exe

Folder::
C:\VundoFix Backups

Registry::
[-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\~\Browser Helper Objects\{C26B4E06-3B0B-480B-B248-4392ADD3880D}]
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run]
"AlcxMonitor"=-
"SearchIndexer"=-
[-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\software\microsoft\windows nt\currentversion\winlogon\notify\byxurst]
[-HKEY_CURRENT_USER\software\microsoft\windows\currentversion\explorer\mountpoints2\D]

Now drag then drop the CFScript file onto ComboFix.exe as seen in the image below.

This will start ComboFix again.
After reboot, (in case it asks to reboot), post the contents of Combofix.txt in your next reply along with a new HijackThis log.

Your version of Sun Java is out of date.
Older versions have vulnerabilities that malware can use to infect your system.
Please follow these steps to remove older versions of Sun Java, and then update.
1. Download the latest version of Java Runtime Environment (JRE)
2. Scroll down to where it says 'Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6u2'.
3. Click the "Download" button to the right.
4. Check the box that says: "Accept License Agreement".
5. The page will refresh.
6. Click on the link to download 'Windows Offline Installation, Multi-language' and save to your desktop.
7. Close any programs you may have running - especially your web browser.
8. Go to Start > Control Panel double-click on Add/Remove programs and remove all older versions of Java.
9. Check any item with Java Runtime Environment (JRE or J2SE) in the name.
10. Click the Change/Remove button.
11. Repeat as many times as necessary to remove each Java versions.
12. Reboot your computer once all Java components are removed.
13. Then from your desktop double-click on jre-6u2-windows-i586-p.exe to install the newest version.

Download\install 'SuperAntiSpyware Home Edition Free Version' from here:
http://www.superantispyware.com/downloadfi...ANTISPYWAREFREE

Exit Hijackthis.

Start SuperAntiSpyware.
On the main screen click on 'Scan your computer'.
Check: 'Perform Complete Scan'.
Click 'Next' to start the scan.

Superantispyware will now scan your computer, when it's finished it will list all/any infections found.

Hi Richie,
I did all that without a problem. SuperAntiSpyware found a whole bunch of tracking cookies.
The PC seems to be running fine, but I've tried to use it only to perform your instructions. I did not
get any Norton popups about Downloader nor Vundo. I'll see what happens in the next few days,
as I let my family back on, and I'll let you know.
Presuming I'm out of the woods, I now have collected six programs: Norton Antivirus, Spybot, HighjackThis,
SuperAntiSpyware, Ad-Aware and the Windows firewall. NAV and Spybot are always in the backgorund.
Should I keep running both? I guess the question is how to avoid getting in the same situation. My kids are hooked on
Webkinz and a few other online games. Will these programs protect me?

Below are the logs you requested.

Thanks,
Bower

Please disable Spybot S&Dís protection again,or it will interfere.

Presuming I'm out of the woods, I now have collected six programs: Norton Antivirus, Spybot, HighjackThis,
SuperAntiSpyware, Ad-Aware and the Windows firewall. NAV and Spybot are always in the backgorund.
Should I keep running both? I guess the question is how to avoid getting in the same situation. My kids are hooked on
Webkinz and a few other online games. Will these programs protect me?

NAV and Spybot are always in the backgorund.
Should I keep running both?

You most certainly require NAV running at all times, virus protection is a must.
I suggest you keep Spybot S&Dís protection running at all times too.

Hi Richie,
Wow. I'll get on it right away.
In the meatime I realized that not all accounts on this PC are not protected.
My kids tell me they got the NAV pop up today. When they log in, Spybot and
SuperAntiSpyware is not running. Now the PC has Vundo again!!!
FYI: The don't have admin priviledges. I think the virus gets in when they login.
Do the antovirus programs automatically protect all users, or do I need to login everyone and
activate them?

Well, I followed the instructions above. No pop ups right now.
I then had Spybot and Super... scan the system and they found Vundo and some other Adware stuff.
I had them fix the problems and did another scan now. They did not find anything else.
I'm not sure what's going to happen once the kids login.
I had them login and enabled SuperAntiSpyware and Spybot when they login.
I will have them login again and scan again.

Do you think there is any more risk if their accounts are setup as administrator?

Should I send you another set of logs to check everything is clean.
I'm not sure what you look for, so I'm sorry if we need to start all over.
If it makes you feel any better I just made a donation.

Thank you very much for your help. You are the assassin!

Note:
If you have previously downloaded ComboFix,please delete that version and download it again from below.
Download Combofix again and save to your desktop:

Also post a new Hijackthis log please.

Hi Richie, a couple questions before I start.
We could be doing this for ever. Should I do anything about the other accounts?
All accounts at login launch: Symantec Antivirus, Spybot and Super...
All scans are clean running from each account (up all night).
I noticed that the Spybot's taskbar icon does not alway show up, but I know it's running
because I see the startup box. Is this a problem?
When I go to yahoo.com, spybot tells me about each denial for tracking cookies. Is there
a way to automatically deny it without me clicking the button all the times? I doesn't give
me the option to allow it anyway.

Thank you,
Bower

Then click the "Advanced . . ." button; in the smaller window that pops up,check the box next to "Override automatic cookie handling" and choose "Block" under the "Third-party Cookies" heading.
Click the OK button to confirm that setting.

I noticed that the Spybot's taskbar icon does not alway show up, but I know it's running
because I see the startup box. Is this a problem?

Right click on the Taskbar, click 'Properties'.
Select the 'Taskbar' tab at the top.
Now click on the 'Customize' button.
Once in the 'Taskbar and Start Menu Properties' window, double click on the Spybot S-D Resident entry.
Using the dropdown menu on the right, select 'Always Show'.
Click Ok/Apply/Ok.

Are you experiencing any other problems.

Hi Richie,

I did have a problem with the rest of the accounts not running antispyware.
I fixed them all. I have not seen any popups in the last two days.
A couple times I ran a scan after one of the accounts had been used and it found Vundo.
SuperAntiSpyware also finds tracking cookies often. I will do the same blocking
of third party cookies on all accounts.

Here are the logs as you requested two posts ago. Please let me know if you see anything
suspicious.

Thanks,
Bower
