AVG Antivirus finds nothing, Spybot Search and Destroy finds DSO Exploit and says it fixes it, but it continues to find the same item; AdAware found nothing.

Thanks for any help you can give.

I want you to fix some of those entries. Please do the following:

Please make sure that you can view all hidden files. Instructions on how to do this can be found here:

How to see hidden files in Windows

Run Hijackthis again, click scan, and Put a checkmark next to each of these. Then click the Fix button

O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [Felix] C:\Program Files\ScreenMates\FELIX2.EXE This something you installed? If not fix it

Reboot your computer into Safe Mode and delete the following files:

Then delete these files or directories (Do not be concerned if they do not exist)
C:\PROGRAM FILES\TOOLBAR\
C:\Program Files\Xupiter\

Disable System Restore. You can find instructions on how to enable and reenable system restore here:

Managing Windows Millenium System Restore
or

Windows XP System Restore Guide

Renable system restore with instructions from tutorial above

Reboot your computer to go back to normal mode and post a new log.

Thanks for quick response.

FYI when booting to the secure mode ME hangs. CTL-ALT-DEL shows that Spool32 is not responding. When that task is ended Secure Mode boots.

I made all of the changes that you suggested except that I was not able to find and delete the file C:\Program Files\Xupiter\.

IE still won't run and gives the error that it has caused an error in URLMON.DLL.

Spybot ran after rebooting and it still finds the error but cannot correct it, here is the information that Spybot comes up with FYI.

DSO Exploit: Data source object exploit (Registry change, nothing done)

Do not worry about the DSO exploit being reported as it is a bug in Spybot.

As for the log it looks clean to me. Good job! How is the computer running now?

Run the system file checker.

Click on start, then run, and type sfc and press enter. Then follow the prompts to check each file.

sfc seems to be missing. Can this be installed from the WIN ME upgrade CD?

Thanks,

Reboot and try Internet Explorer again. If at some time you need these apps, they will automatically download and install when you need thm,

Removed all that you listed and rebooted. Still the same. IE will load but when you try to search the box comes up indicating that Iexplore has caused an error in URLMON.dll and that IExplore will now close.

Any other suggestions???

Thanks,

Confused User

Did you by chance install any new devices to this computer?
For example, HP Instant Delivery is known to cause this error

Also Quickview will cause this problem.

Thanks for the comment. No, nothing new has been added to that system. The problem began about a week ago (been trying to correct since then) and we cannot identify any cause.

Will take a look at the information you suggested. The error on my machine though indicates that Iexplore has caused an error, it says nothing about a page fault. Is this meaningful?

again,
confused user

You mayt want to reinstall internet explorer. There is a tutorial in the tutorial section that covers how to do this
