I think I got some malware and I've run through the basics in several forums. I believe it was hiding out in a file called perfmonss.exe along with a couple of nero 8 files and a strange cd writer system service that I'm pretty sure I've never installed. I've used several other methods to delete those files along with all registry entries mentioning them and I just wanted to double check that it's completely gone since the computer still seems a little slow to me (not like before though). Anyway, here is a hijackthis log from today. Oh, I changed hijackthis.exe name to scanner.exe.

Thanks,

Ryan

Hi rba46,

Sorry for the delay, this forum is very busy right now.

There are no signs of malware in your log.

However, you had a pretty bad infection and so I think it would be worthwhile to run a couple of scans.

Please download rootchk.exe and save to your desktop

* Temporarily Disable any real-time monitoring programs <- click on this link for a list and see the Note below
* Disconnect from the Internet.
* Double-click on rootchk.exe to run the program.
* A command prompt window will open as the scan begins and then close.
* When the scan is completed, a logfile named rootlog.txt will open and be saved to the root directory usually C:\.
* Copy and paste the contents of the log into your next reply.

Note: To avoid false positives, it is important that you disable ZoneAlarm Pro firewall or any other security program that protects your registry (Teatimer, Adwatch, Prevx, etc) before running a rootchk scan.

After running the rootchk scan, be sure to re-enable your scanner and firewall before going online again.

Then run a Kaspersky online scan.

Please do an online scan with Kaspersky WebScanner

Click on Kaspersky Online Scanner

You will be prompted to install an ActiveX component from Kaspersky, Click Yes.
  • The program will launch and then begin downloading the latest definition files:
  • Once the files have been downloaded click on NEXT
  • Now click on Scan Settings
  • In the scan settings make that the following are selected:
    • Scan using the following Anti-Virus database:
    Extended (if available otherwise Standard)
    • Scan Options:
    Scan Archives
    Scan Mail Bases
  • Click OK
  • Now under select a target to scan:Select My Computer
  • This will program will start and scan your system.
  • The scan will take a while so be patient and let it run.
  • Once the scan is complete it will display if your system has been infected.
    • Now click on the Save as Text button:
  • Save the file to your desktop.
  • Copy and paste that information in your next post.
Finally, run a fresh HijackThis scan.

Please post the Kaspersky log, the rootchk log, and the HJT log to your next reply.

Dave

Below are the requested logs. I've had the same version of the FTP Server for quite some time and I know there have been a lot of false positives with the exe file so I don't think that it is really infected.

Thanks,

Ryan

Hi Ryan,

I know there have been a lot of false positives with the exe file so I don't think that it is really infected.

I agree, I have seen this a time or two myself.

Looks to me like you're clean.

Here's the "all clear" speech. Looks like you are already doing or already have done most of the things recommended:

The first step is to delete all temp files. Note for subsequent runs, uncheck the box to delete prefetch files. History is your option.

Note: if you have already used another temp cleaning utility, such as CCleaner, you don't need to download or use this one.

Get ATF Cleaner here . It does not require installation, just download it to your desktop.
Double-click the ATFCleaner icon on your desktop to launch the program. For this first run, check the select all box on the main page, then click Empty selected. Then, if you use Firefox or Opera, click on the appropriate tab and repeat the same drill.

Now you need to Flush your System Restore files and set a clean restore point. To do this, you must first disable System Restore, then reboot your computer, and finally, turn System Restore back on...For the details, I refer you to this tutorial:

http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/tutorials/windows-xp-system-restore-guide/

Then, please read and implement the recommendations found here.

http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/tutorials/keep-your-computer-safe-online/

There are more tips found here:

http://users.telenet.be/bluepatchy/miekiem...prevention.html

Any questions, just ask.

Dave

Thanks alot for checking that out. I was pretty sure that I had gotten it all, but this infection really was more of a pain that I originally thought when I went to clean it.
