While i was downloading something AVG warned me about several viruses and i vaulted them all. At the same time AntiVearGear icon appeared on my desktop, along with other 2 icons (a blue question mark and a red cross). I never opened them but ran a full scan and got read of them all. There were several viruses and among them something called download.zlob.
But the system alert message is still constantly popping up, when i click on it it opens AntiVearGear site and wants me to download (or buy?), which i havent done. The message says that I have several active spyware running and its popping up every couple of minutes.
I've seen your guidlines for a situation similar to mine but i would be more confident if you would run me through it step by step.
Thank you so much

Hello there and welcome to BleepingComputer. My name is Charles and I will be dealing with your log today.
Please print off a copy of these instructions, and also save them to a Notepad file on your desktop, so they are easily accessible.
We are going to boot into Safe Mode later in the fix, and there is no internet access.

Download SmitfraudFix (by S!Ri)
Open the file and it will extract the contents (a folder named SmitfraudFix) to your Desktop.

Reboot your computer into Safe Mode.
This is done by rebooting Windows and pressing F8 at boot/Windows startup, usually right after the beep.
Then select Safe Mode from the list.
Make sure you choose the option without Networking Support.

Once in Safe Mode, open the SmitfraudFix folder again.
Double-click smitfraudfix.cmd.
Select option #2 - Clean by typing 2 and press "Enter" to delete infected files.
You will be prompted : "Registry cleaning - Do you want to clean the registry ?"; answer "Yes" by typing Y and press "Enter" in order to remove the Desktop background and clean registry keys associated with the infection.
The tool will now check if wininet.dll is infected. You may be prompted to replace the infected file (if found); answer "Yes" by typing Y and press "Enter".
The tool may need to restart your computer to finish the cleaning process; if it doesn't, please restart it into Normal Windows.
A text file will appear onscreen, with results from the cleaning process; please copy/paste the content of that report into your next reply.
The report can also be found at the root of the system drive, usually at C:\rapport.txt
Warning : running option #2 on a non infected computer will remove your Desktop background.

Please include rapport.txt, along with a new HijackThis log in your next reply.
Thanks,
Charles

Hi Charles, i appreciate the quick reply.
I followed the instructions and the pop up is gone. I will post the rapport and hijack this anyways... Is my lap top ok now?

Just wanted to ask one more thing. When i was rebooting into safe mode i could barely read the options, the screen was full of question markes and the words were all messed up. For instance Safe Mode was spelled Sggo Mooe, and so on. I found Normal Windows when i was rebooting by luck
Is that anything i should worry about?

Thank you so much,
Maya

Hi there,
I think it would be best to deal with one problem at a time, but that is definately something which needs addressing soon.
Please print off a copy of these instructions, and also save them to a Notepad file on your desktop, so they are easily accessible.
We are going to boot into Safe Mode later in the fix, and there is no internet access.

Scan again with HijackThis and put a checkmark next to each of the following entries (if present):

R3 - URLSearchHook: Yahoo! Toolbar - {EF99BD32-C1FB-11D2-892F-0090271D4F88} - (no file)
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [winclean] c:\windows\system32\winclean.exe

Then close all other windows--you should only see HijackThis on your Desktop--and click the Fix checked button.

Please reboot your computer into Safe Mode.
This is done by rebooting Windows and pressing F8 at boot/Windows startup, usually right after the beep.
Then select Safe Mode from the list.
Make sure you choose the option without Networking Support.

Set your system to show all files.
Navigate to Start | My Computer | Tools | Folder Options.
Select the View tab. Under the "Hidden Files and Folders" heading, select "Show hidden files and folders".
Uncheck: Hide file extensions for known file types
Uncheck the Hide protected operating system files (recommended) option.
Click Yes to confirm.

Next, please find and delete the following file (if present):

c:\windows\system32\winclean.exe

Reboot into Normal Mode again.

In your next reply I'd like to see a new HijackThis log, but can you also tell me: are you using a custom hosts file?
Thanks,
Charles

Hello Charles,
Well, naively i thought we were done with this problem since the pop up was gone  . Thanks for further assistance.
I must mention that my knowledge about computers is quite modest so I'll write to you what I've done, so in case i do something stupid you can save the day )
I deleted those two entries with HijackThis.
I couldnt find the winclean.exe.
I left the "Show hidden files and folders" option selected.

I wasn't sure what "custom hosts file" are so i googled it and it reminds me about something Spybot S&D does.
So, my answer would be no, dont use it. The protection i have is Antiavast, AdAware,ZoneAlarm and Spybot S&D.
Should i start using it?

Cheers,
Maya

Please run Panda's ActiveScan.
Once you are on the Panda site click the Scan your PC button
A new window will open, click the Check Now button.
Enter your personal details.
Click the big Scan Now button.
It will ask to install various content - please allow this.
It will start downloading the files it requires for the scan, which may take a while.
When download is complete, click on Local Disks to start the scan.
When the scan has finished - if anything malicious is found - click the See Report button.
Click Save Report and save the file to your Desktop, so you can post this log in your next reply.

I'd like to see the Panda log in your reply, please.
Thanks,
Charles

After i left my details at panda site and clicked on Scan Now, Avast warned me about worm Win32:CTX so i aborted connection.
Should I continue with the process anyways?

Thanks,
Maya

Yes!
I used the link you left me in your post and followed the instructions.
After i wrote down my location and email details (which was required) panda started the scan, before asking me if i wish to download anything avast warned me not to continue. It says the file http//acs.pandasoftware.com/activescan/as5free/motor.cab\pska
contains a malware win32:CTX

Thanks,
Maya

This is a false positive; antiviruses sometimes find it hard to differentiate between 'good' and 'malicious' uses of certain filetypes.

Okay. In that case we will try another online scanner: Kaspersky WebScanner
You will be promted to install an ActiveX component from Kaspersky, Click Yes.
The program will launch and then begin downloading the latest definition files:
Once the files have been downloaded click on Next
Select a target to scan; click on My Computer
The scan will take a while so be patient and let it run.
Once the scan is complete choose the option to Save as Text
Post these results in your next reply.

We need to purge your infected system restore points.
On the Desktop, right-click My Computer, then click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab near the top of the window.
Check Turn off System Restore, click Apply, and then click OK.
More information on how to disable your system restore can be found here.

We want to create a new, clean restore point. Please first reboot your computer.
On the Desktop, right-click My Computer, then click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab near the top of the window.
Uncheck "Turn off System Restore", click Apply, and then click OK.

Click Start | All Programs | Accessories | System Tools, and select System Restore.
In the System Restore wizard, select the box next the text labeled "Create a restore point" and click the Next button.
Type a description for your new restore point - Something like "After trojan/spyware cleanup".
Click Create, and after it has created the restore point, click "Close".
Further instructions on creating a restore point can be found here

Then let me know how things are running now.
Thanks,
Charles

Sorry for the delay.
I followed your instructions and created a new restore point.

My laptop was slow before, but since the cleanup its been awful. 5-6 minutes of startup, takes ages to open folders, websites, not to mention switching between tabs too fast freezes it and i get the non-responding program error. Well, its really really slow, it was faster with all the viruses
70% of space takes up my music, its a lot, would it help if i delete music?

Thanks,
Maya
