No idea whats going on but since I installed Spybot S&D 1.5 My spyweeper has been spamming me with Internet Communication Shield blocks acess to: Yadyada

Started after I Immunized Is that the problem? Scanners detected nothing, I did a restore to before I installed 1.5 And still get the messages, if it is the immunization then it wouldn't be fixed by that would it?

Immunizing just modifs hostfile right? Should I just empty it out?

(I know HJT isnt in a permanent directory atm, will fix it before I fix anything)

Alrighty. I found out what was going on. I'll explain what happened incase this happens to anyone else. Spybot S&D < 1.5 only had about 35000 things to immunize, and was not as wide spread as 1.5. 1.5 Added a bleep-ton of sites to my hostfile and used my local IP to redirect my computer to my own computer if It attempted to connect to those sites. That drove SpySweeper NUTS. Somehow it was reading those sites in the hostfile as attempts to connect to the internet.

I realized this when it was still spamming the warnings when not connected to the internet and noticed my hostile was Massive.

I deleted everything but my 'localhost' out of my hostfile, and not had one issue since then. Sorry if anyone read my HJT log, I had originally posted this in the AV/Spyware programs thread but it was moved to HJT Misplaced Logs.

My fix seems to have worked. Hopefully I didn't do something dumb

I would really like to upgrade to 1.5 Spybot..But apparently Spysweeper will have issues, anyone got an ideas?

Hi,

Good you already solved your issue.
Actually the problem is Spysweeper, it detects what has been set in the hostsfile - these entries in the hosts file are actually the sites that are blocked. It's a pity that Spysweeper still detects them.
It may be a good idea to contact Spysweeper with this problem - because they should fix it.

Yeah I knew it was a conflict with the internet communication shield as the host file does a DNS cache on items inside it. Must say it took about 2000 warnings before I finally came to the conclusion thats what happened. As is, I'm waiting for an update for spysweeper. I will wait for that before I update to 1.5 S&D as I still have another year left on SS, and I generally like that program as its my only active Spyware scanner and a nice little tool.

Thanks for confirming my suspicions.

And I agree, spysweeper should fix this as webroot and S&D are popular and good programs, I just think the IE communication shield is a bit 'too' sensitive, however I always liked things being a little overzealous, this is just the ocassional problem.

Well, the main problem with Spysweeper is, Webroot has decided that the end-user only needs 500 entries in the HOSTS file and all extra ones being added will be flagged. This is silly ofcourse and this problem already exists almost a year. Even though they said they are going to fix it - it hasn't been fixed yet, so you'll have to be patient.
You can still go ahead and install latest version of Spybot, but disable the Hosts File Shield in Spysweeper then.
To do this, Open Spy Sweeper and click Options. Click Shields and click Hosts File. Uncheck Hosts File Shield
