For an explanation of thumbs.db files and how to get rid of them, see the following page: (this is from 2003 but still relevent, at least as far as I know it is)

What is Thumbs.db?

It is possible to delete the thumbs.db file, but not recommended. What is the full path to the file?

Were there photos on the flash drive?

The Thumbs.db file is normally created in any folder with Movies, Pictures or folders created from digital cameras so that you can view a piece of their content without actualy opening the files inside. This includes folders on removable media, flash drives as well as your hard drive.

Thumbs.db is a way of caching thumbnail images of any image or movie file in a folder so you do not have to reload a thumbnail everytime you browse that folder. The thumbnail cache helps to improve the speed of displaying thumbnails the next time you open the folder by caching a set of thumbnails for the image and video files in the folder.

Deleting the Thumbs.db file deletes the cache, which is by default regenerated the next time you view the folder contents. To turn off thumbnail caching, open Windows Explorer, go to Tools > Options and click on the View tab. Check the box next to "Do not cache thumbnails" and click OK.
