I would be grateful if someone could help. When ever I do a Google search and click on a website in the results page, I am redirected to a site called Btcar and a few other weird sites. I beleive that this is a nasty trojan. I have run many different scans, including AVG (anti virus & anti-spy ware) and a host of others, but nothing seems to remove it. I see that there have been many others in my situation.

I have followed the recommendations to a T, as set out by BleepingComputer.com, with regards to the "preparation guide for use before posting a hijackthis log". I have attached the hijackthis log at the end of this message. Can someone please help. Many thanks... Rob

  • You will be asked to reboot your computer; please do so. Your system may take longer than usual to load; this is normal.
  • Once the desktop loads a text file will open (report.txt).

Run HijackThis, and press "Do a System Scan Only".
1. When the scan is complete place a check mark next to the following entries:

Everything seems to be normal... Thank you very much for all your help. I have more more question. The computer takes quite a bit longer to start and it is slower than before. Could this be caused by all the antivirus/antispyware I have still operating (Panda, adware, AVG anti-rootkit, spybot search and destroy, McAfee stinger, Zone Alarm, etc). Should I keep them all and if not, what should I keep?

Yes you need to remove ZoneAlarm because Panda Internet Security covers Anti-Virus and firewall. What program do you have installed by Symantec???

The version of Panda I have is a trial version, which ends in 3 weeks. Will it still cover antivirus and firewall after the trial?

I bought Norton, but removed it after 2 months as it slowed up my computer too much (it would freeze up).

After the three weeks, you will no longer get updates. Not a good solution. You have some leftover Symantec stuff leftover.
Lets see what else we need to remove.

Open Hijackthis, Click Open the Misc tools section Then click the Open Uninstall Manager... button.
The Add/Remove Programs Manager panel should appear.
In this panel click the Save list button.
Save the uninstall_list.txt file to your desktop and copy and paste the contents back in your next reply.

Please download ATF Cleaner by Atribune.

This program is for XP and Windows 2000 onlySave it to your desktop

Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.

Under Main choose: Select All

Click the Empty Selected button.
If you use Firefox browserClick Firefox at the top and choose: Select All

Click the Empty Selected button.

NOTE: If you would like to keep your saved passwords, please click No at the prompt.
If you use Opera browserClick Opera at the top and choose: Select All

Click the Empty Selected button.

NOTE: If you would like to keep your saved passwords, please click No at the prompt.
Click Exit on the Main menu to close the program.

For Technical Support, double-click the e-mail address located at the bottom of each menu.

Notes for Windows Vista users:

On Windows Vista that "Windows Temp" is disabled, to empty "Windows Temp" ATF-Cleaner must be "Run as an Administrator"
Prefetch has been disabled on Windows Vista. As I'm not sure the effects that emptying prefetch on Windows Vista will have for the time being it I won't enable that function.

Also, you need to reboot your computer!!!!

How is everything running???

Thanks a million, everything seems to run smoothly.

My Panda trial expires in 2-3 weeks and thereafter as you said, there will be no updates. What do you suggest. Should I buy the Panda software, or should I run another free edition such as AVG? Thanks again...

Well, it up to you. I have always liked panda.

We need to remove the tool you downloaded, please delete the following files and folders:
C:\FixWareout

On your Desktop
Fixwarout.txt

Now that your system is clean you should SET A NEW RESTORE POINT to prevent future reinfection from the old restore point AFTER cleaning your system of any malware infection. Any trojans or spyware you picked up could have been saved in System Restore and are waiting to re-infect you. Since System Restore is a protected directory, your tools can not access it to delete files, trapping viruses inside. Setting a new restore point should be done to prevent any future reinfection from the old restore point and enable your computer to "roll-back" in case there is a future problem.

To SET A NEW RESTORE POINT:
1. Go to Start > Programs > Accessories > System Tools and click "System Restore".
2. Choose the radio button marked "Create a Restore Point" on the first screen then click "Next". Give the R.P. a name then click "Create". The new point will be stamped with the current date and time. Keep a log of this so you can find it easily should you need to use System Restore.
3. Then go to Start > Run and type: Cleanmgr
4. Click "OK".
5. Click the "More Options" Tab.
6. Click "Clean Up" in the System Restore section to remove all previous restore points except the newly created one.

Graphics for doing this are in the following links if you need them.
How to Create a Restore Point.
How to use Cleanmgr.

======================================

Here is some useful information on keeping your computer clean:
  • Most important thing is to make sure Windows is kept up to date with the latest patches and updates from Windows Update.
  • If you don't have a Firewall installed, please choose from the following:
  • If you don't have a Anti-Virus installed, please download the following free program:
  • Here are two great Preventive programs:
    • SpywareBlaster protects you from malicious ActiveX controls and cookies. Make sure and check for updates twice a month.
    • IESpyads adds a long list of bad sites to your Restricted sites in Internet Explorer and protects against drive by downloads.
  • Surf Safe with McAfee's SiteAdisor. SiteAdisor will work with Internet Explorer and Mozilla Firefox. SiteAdisor is a browser plugin that assigns a safety rating to domains listed in your search engine. SiteAdvisor uses the following color codes to indicate the safety level of each site.
    • Red for Warning
    • Yellow for Use Caution
    • Green for Safe
    • Grey for Unknown
Here are the link to install SiteAdisor in Internet Explorer and Firefox
