I followed the steps in the posting about what to do before running a hijack this log. Nothing seemed to work to get rid of this. It is a flashing Shield/Question Mark in the lower right toolbar that has a warning window about spyware. If I right click it opens a webpage called AntiVirWare. My computer is running almost 100% all the time, and it has slowed down performance. Currently I have Norton Antivirus but the subscription is out of date.

I followed all the instructions and the flashing shield is still in the toolbar after numerous scans. Regardless, here is the log file I received from the hijackthis log. I should note that every time I reboot I get spybot trying to stop processes, one of which is called msie...exe or something similar. So spybot is currently stopping those two processes from happening. They do come up every time I try and reboot however.

I'd just like to say, thanks for your help in advance. How long does it usually take to review the log? I really would like to get this cleared up ASAP. Thanks again.

Hi johnnienaked

Welcome to BleepingComputer Forums and thanks for your patience.

You might want to save this page on your favorites, so you can find it again when you return.

Currently I have Norton Antivirus but the subscription is out of date.

This is somewhat suicidal in today's digital world. Remember that your system is extremely vulnerable without the necessary security patches/updates. You must have all your softwares updates.

I suggest you to pay for a Norton new subscription or if you dont want Norton, you have to remove them and you have to install another antivirus program.

If you choose install another antivirus, you have to follow this instrucions:

1. Please download and install one of these good (and free) products:

Avira Antivir
Avast
AVG

Install just one of these products.

2. To fully remove Norton AntiVirus, you should go here before uninstalling and download the files and print the instructions for removal, and follow them after uninstalling NAV.

Click Here (note: this removes ALL Norton 2003/2004/2005/2006/2007/2008 products from your computer)

Before we start fixing anything you should print out these instructions or copy them to a NotePad file so they will be accessible. Some steps will require you to disconnect from the Internet or use Safe Mode and you will not have access to this page.

You have your protection program running on your computer, which is good but they may interfere with the fixes we need to make, so it's better to disable them for the moment. You may re-enable them again once you're clean; I will let you know.

To disable Spybot S&D (Teatimer):

a. Run Spybot-S&D in Advanced Mode.
b. If it is not already set to do this Go to the Mode menu select "Advanced Mode"
c. On the left hand side, Click on Tools
d. Then click on the Resident Icon in the List
e. Uncheck "Resident TeaTimer" and OK any prompts.
f. Restart your computer.

*** REMOVAL INSTRUCIONS ***

1. Please re-open HijackThis, click on "Scan" and check the boxes next to ONLY the entries listed below, "if still present":

R0 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Start Page = about:blank
O2 - BHO: (no name) - {1C3C4699-B285-475F-BE47-0B26088CE876} - C:\Program Files\Video ActiveX Access\iesplg.dll
O2 - BHO: (no name) - {7E853D72-626A-48EC-A868-BA8D5E23E045} - (no file)
O2 - BHO: (no name) - {DEF44BA1-6916-41F1-9373-F199E6F5C5A7} - C:\WINDOWS\System32\oalna.dll (file missing)
O3 - Toolbar: (no name) - {37B85A29-692B-4205-9CAD-2626E4993404} - (no file)

Then close all open windows (you should only see HijackThis on your Desktop and Taskbar)
Click on Posted Image button.

A box will pop up asking you if you wish to fix the selected items. Please choose YES.
Once it has fixed them, please exit/close HijackThis.

4. Please download SmitfraudFix
DO NOT use it just yet.

Note : process.exe is detected by some antivirus programs (AntiVir, Dr.Web, Kaspersky) as a "RiskTool"; it is not a virus, but a program used to stop system processes. Antivirus programs cannot distinguish between "good" and "malicious" use of such programs, therefore they may alert the user.

5. Please reboot your computer in Safe Mode by doing the following :
  • Restart your computer
  • After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, tap the F8 key continually;
  • Instead of Windows loading as normal, a menu with options should appear;
  • Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode, then press "Enter".
  • Choose your usual account.
Once in Safe Mode, double-click SmitfraudFix.exe
Select option #2 - Clean by typing 2 and press "Enter" to delete infected files.

You will be prompted : "Registry cleaning - Do you want to clean the registry ?"; answer "Yes" by typing Y and press "Enter" in order to remove the Desktop background and clean registry keys associated with the infection.

The tool will now check if wininet.dll is infected. You may be prompted to replace the infected file (if found); answer "Yes" by typing Y and press "Enter".

The tool may need to restart your computer to finish the cleaning process; if it doesn't, please restart anyway into normal Windows. A text file will appear onscreen, with results from the cleaning process; please copy/paste the content of that report into your next reply along with a new HijackThis log.
The report can also be found at the root of the system drive, usually at C:\rapport.txt
