Can someone please help me. I got a virus and cleaned it off with antivirus software. But the virus added files to my pc and I have a svchost.exe file that is connecting to a proxy server to send spam email. I was contacted by my internet provider and they detected the spam emails coming from my pc and they are going to shut my internet connection down if I donít fix the virus. Can someone please tell me how to remove the rest of this virus safely? I have several svchost.exe files and I donít know what else was added to my pc, this is kind of over my head here if anyone would take the time to help me I would greatly appreciate it. I have included my hjt log.

Hello,

Yes, you are most likely infected with a spambot. This means you're system has been compromised by a backdoor and you should immediately take it offline. Get to a known clean computer and work from there. These infections will also typically steal sensitive information from you, so the first thing you should do on the clean computer is change all your passwords, concentrating first on sites where any sort of financial transaction are performed. Even high-end online gaming sites are targeted by such trojans, so don't neglect to change passwords for them or any site that requires a login. Don't use your computer while it's infected as the new passwords will just be compromised again.

Many experts in the security community believe that once infected with this type of Trojan, the best course of action would be a reformat and reinstall of the OS.

How Do I Handle Possible Identity Theft, Internet Fraud and CC Fraud?

When Should I Format, How Should I Reinstall

We can attempt to clean your system and probably get most of the infection, but there are no gurantees as infections now are very sophisticated, cause a lot of damge that is difficult to find and repair, and some of that damage makes your system easier to compromise again. Let me know what you want to do. If you reformat and reinstall Windows, then we won't need to even try to remove this malware as that will already be taken care of.

If you want to continue we need to get you set up a little better.

1. You left off the header in your log. I need to see the entire log from top to bottom in order to get all relevant information. If you left the header off intentionally it may be because you aren't running the latest version of HijackThis. So before you repost your log please download and install the new version by following the instructions in Step 9 of the Preparation Guide For Use Before Posting A Hijackthis Log. Note that it is unnecessary to uninstall the old version because the new one will be copied to a different folder.

2. You have your log posted in another forum. Please have it closed and if you have any other threads pending in any other forums ask that they be closed as well. There are a lot of people out there needing help and not enough helpers, so it is more efficient for us to have one person take on your case so the rest of the helpers can go about helping others. I and my colleagues share ideas and information so it is still like having more than one set of eyes here even tho you only have one person helping you.

Please post back with your decision.

If you decide to try cleaning, post back with the updated log and confirm that you have the computer offline, what kind of access you have to another computer, that you have changed passwords and closed your other thread.

The thing about people

is they change

when they walk away.--Mipso
