I am using Windows XP sevice pack 2 and my computer just shuts off when I use certain programs (virus scan etc.)

Can you be a little more specific on what programs and a little more descriptive? Are there any error messages, does the screen go blank or just freeze?

Having grandkids is God's way of giving you a 2nd chance because you were too busy working your butt off the 1st time around

It sounds like you might be overheating. Assuming this is a desktop, have you ever had the side of the computer off? You need to clean the heatsink and CPU fan, all fans really. It's usually done with a can of compressed air
