well guys im thinking of doing a format soon
the thing is whats the best programes to install to keep me protected from the start before i go surfing etc as thats when my problems start

Before going online, install an Antivirus, and Firewall.
When that's done, go online, and update the Antivirus.
Then, if you're using Windows, go to Microsoft and install all of the critical updates.
Then it's just a matter of installing, and updating, the Anti-spyware programs you want to use.
