Hi
I picked up media codec (according to stopzilla) and a whole host of other things: virusburst, zlob, spyaxe ... I have removed a number of them (I thought) using spyware doctor, no-adware and smitfraud.exe and thought I was clean. But, this morning I did a scan using no-adware and it found another trojan, hijackerinternetexploere zone hijack & mirar toolbar - which I cleaned. I understand that media codec loads up other bad stuff so wondered if this still resides in my laptop. I've followed all the instructions on your preparation guide and attach the log from hijackthis. I'd be greatful if someone could let me know if they still see anything dangerous here.

Thanks

Hi and welcome to Bleeping Computer! My name is Sam and I will be helping you.

Please download ComboFix and save it to your desktop.
Double click combofix.exe and follow the prompts.
When it's done running it will produce a log for you. Please post that log in your next reply.

Important Note - Do not mouseclick combofix's window whilst it's running. That may cause it to stall.
Posted Image If I have helped you in any way, please consider a donation to help me continue the fight against malware.

Failing to respond back to the person that is giving up their own time to help you not only is insensitive and disrespectful, but it guarantees that you will never receive help from me again. Please thank your helpers and there will always be help here when you need it!

Hi
I've just run no adware this morning and it has found 2 extra things that weren't there last night: Trojan.PWS tanspy and gemius. Convinced there is still something that is downloading this crap without my knowledge. Help appreciated.
Thanks

Your log looks pretty good. I'm not a big fan of NoAdware myself. It's possible that they're false positives. Can you post a log or give me more info on exactly what it found?

In the meantime, I'd like to try a scan that I know to be thorough.

Download and scan with SUPERAntiSpyware Free for Home Users
  • Double-click SUPERAntiSpyware.exe and use the default settings for installation.
  • An icon will be created on your desktop. Double-click that icon to launch the program.
  • If asked to update the program definitions, click "Yes". If not, update the definitions before scanning by selecting "Check for Updates". (If you encounter any problems while downloading the updates, manually download and unzip them from here.)
  • Under "Configuration and Preferences", click the Preferences button.
  • Click the Scanning Control tab.
  • Under Scanner Options make sure the following are checked (leave all others unchecked):
    • Close browsers before scanning.
    • Scan for tracking cookies.
    • Terminate memory threats before quarantining.
  • Click the "Close" button to leave the control center screen.
  • Back on the main screen, under "Scan for Harmful Software" click Scan your computer.
  • On the left, make sure you check C:\Fixed Drive.
  • On the right, under "Complete Scan", choose Perform Complete Scan.
  • Click "Next" to start the scan. Please be patient while it scans your computer.
  • After the scan is complete, a Scan Summary box will appear with potentially harmful items that were detected. Click "OK".
  • Make sure everything has a checkmark next to it and click "Next".
  • A notification will appear that "Quarantine and Removal is Complete". Click "OK" and then click the "Finish" button to return to the main menu.
  • If asked if you want to reboot, click "Yes".
  • To retrieve the removal information after reboot, launch SUPERAntispyware again.
    • Click Preferences, then click the Statistics/Logs tab.
    • Under Scanner Logs, double-click SUPERAntiSpyware Scan Log.
    • If there are several logs, click the current dated log and press View log. A text file will open in your default text editor.
    • Please copy and paste the Scan Log results in your next reply.
  • Click Close to exit the program.

I can't attach the logs from noadware as there is no copy log / export log facility, sorry.

What do you think about this unknown trojan? ...anything to do with my system restore being unable to restore!

Those unknown trojans are in your system restore files. So it's important that you do not do a system restore or you'd be putting back everything that we just removed. That would be bad.

Flush your system restore, this will delete any restore points that you have but it will also make sure that any malware hiding in system restore will be booted off.

Turn off System Restore:
  • On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
  • Click Properties.
  • Click the System Restore tab.
  • Check Turn off System Restore.
  • Click Apply, and then click OK.
Restart your computer, turn it back on and create a restore point.

Create a restore point:
  • Click Start and point to All Programs.
  • Mouse over Accessories, then System Tools, and select System Restore.
  • In the System Restore wizard, select the box next the text labeled "Create a
restore point" and click the Next button.
  • Type a description for your new restore point. Something like "After
cleanup". Click Create and you're done.

Your scans should run clean now.
Let me know how it goes.

I sorted the restore and all the old restore dates are gone. The scans are clean!

Many thanks for your help  Hopefully this will be the end of it!

Sounds good! :flowers:

Now that you are clean, please follow these simple steps in order to keep your computer clean and secure:
  • Disable and Enable System Restore. - If you are using Windows ME or XP then you should disable and reenable system restore to make sure there are no infected files found in a restore point left over from what we have just cleaned.

You can find instructions on how to enable and reenable system restore here:

    Managing Windows Millenium System Restore

    or

    Windows XP System Restore Guide

Renable system restore with instructions from tutorial above

  • Make your Internet Explorer more secure - This can be done by following these simple instructions:
    • From within Internet Explorer click on the Tools menu and then click on Options.
    • Click once on the Security tab
    • Click once on the Internet icon so it becomes highlighted.
    • Click once on the Custom Level button.
      • Change the Download signed ActiveX controls to Prompt
      • Change the Download unsigned ActiveX controls to Disable
      • Change the Initialize and script ActiveX controls not marked as safe to Disable
      • Change the Installation of desktop items to Prompt
      • Change the Launching programs and files in an IFRAME to Prompt
      • Change the Navigate sub-frames across different domains to Prompt
      • When all these settings have been made, click on the OK button.
      • If it prompts you as to whether or not you want to save the settings, press the Yes button.
    • Next press the Apply button and then the OK to exit the Internet Properties page.
  • Use an AntiVirus Software - It is very important that your computer has an anti-virus software running on your machine. This alone can save you a lot of trouble with malware in the future.

See this link for a listing of some online & their stand-alone antivirus programs:

Virus, Spyware, and Malware Protection and Removal Resources

  • Update your AntiVirus Software - It is imperitive that you update your Antivirus software at least once a week (Even more if you wish). If you do not update your antivirus software then it will not be able to catch any of the new variants that may come out.

  • Use a Firewall - I can not stress how important it is that you use a Firewall on your computer. Without a firewall your computer is succeptible to being hacked and taken over. I am very serious about this and see it happen almost every day with my clients. Simply using a Firewall in its default configuration can lower your risk greatly.

For a tutorial on Firewalls and a listing of some available ones see the link below:

    Understanding and Using Firewalls

  • Visit Microsoft's Windows Update Site Frequently - It is important that you visit http://www.windowsupdate.com regularly. This will ensure your computer has always the latest security updates available installed on your computer. If there are new updates to install, install them immediately, reboot your computer, and revisit the site until there are no more critical updates.

  • Install Spybot - Search and Destroy - Install and download Spybot - Search and Destroy with its TeaTimer option. This will provide realtime spyware & hijacker protection on your computer alongside your virus protection. You should also scan your computer with program on a regular basis just as you would an antivirus software.

Hi Sam

All done to the letter !

Just a small question, do I need installshield?
Sygate firewall keeps telling me it wants to update and I keep blocking it as I don't remember ever adding this software.

You are a star and I owe you my sanity

Thank you so much

That's not anything to be concerned about. It's not vital that it updates, but it will probably be less troublesome to you if you just allow it to do so. Here's a bit of info about installshield.
