Hi sharpie, I will be handling your log and helping you to get cleaned up.

Please take note of the following:

1. Please do not make any system changes yet. as any changes you make may well alter your log.
2. The cleaning process is not instant. Please continue to review my answers until I tell you that your computer is clean.
3. If there's anything that you don't understand, please ask your question(s) before proceeding with the fixes.
4. Please reply to this thread. Do not start a new topic.

Firstly....
You are running Hjt from a temporary folder.. this is not a good idea. It can be easily deleted from there and any back ups we need to make, may well be lost.
Please uninstall your present version of HJT and use the download link in step 9 from:
http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/t/34773/preparation-guide-for-use-before-using-malware-removal-tools-and-requesting-help/

It should now be installed at:
C:\Program Files\Trend Micro\HijackThis\HijackThis.exe

Once it's installed, i want you to rename hjt.......... it seems that something maybe trying to hide from us.
This is how we get around that:

Click on Start..... My Computer..... then click on your main drive ( usually 'C').
Then click on Program Files......Trend Micro..... HijackThis....

Now:
Right click on Hijackthis.exe and select Rename, rename it to starbuck.exe
Double click on starbuck.exe (which is still Hijackthis.exe),Run a new scan and post that log into your next reply please.

Thx

Hi sharpie,
You have renamed the HijackThis folder..... not the actual program.

This is what you have:
C:\Program Files\Trend Micro\starbuck.exe\HijackThis.exe

this is what it should be:
C:\Program Files\Trend Micro\HijackThis\Starbuck.exe

Can you rename the folder back to HijackThis and then rename the program within that folder to 'starbuck.exe
and post back a new log.

This is the only way it will work for us.
Thx.

Hi sharpie,

1. Please download VundoFix.exe to your desktop
  • Double-click VundoFix.exe to run it.
  • Click the Scan for Vundo button.
  • Once it's done scanning, click the Remove Vundo button.
  • You will receive a prompt asking if you want to remove the files, click YES
  • Once you click yes, your desktop will go blank as it starts removing Vundo.
  • When completed, it will prompt that it will reboot your computer, click OK.
  • Please post the contents of C:\vundofix.txt in a reply to this thread.
Note: It is possible that VundoFix encountered a file it could not remove. In this case, VundoFix will run on reboot, simply follow the above instructions starting from "Click the Scan for Vundo button" when VundoFix appears upon rebooting.

2. Run HijackThis, click the Config... button, then go to the Misc Tools section and click Open Uninstall Manager. You'll see a list of programs; click on Save List...

The file "uninstall_list.txt" will be created. Copy and paste the contents of this file to your next reply.

3. Before we start fixing anything you should print out these instructions or copy them to a NotePad file so they will be accessible. Some steps will require you to disconnect from the Internet or use Safe Mode and you will not have access to this page.

4. Please download DrWeb-CureIt & save it to your desktop. DO NOT perform a scan yet.

5. Reboot your computer in "SAFE MODE" using the F8 method. To do this, restart your computer and after hearing your computer beep once during startup (but before the Windows icon appears) press the F8 key repeatedly. A menu will appear with several options. Use the arrow keys to navigate and select the option to run Windows in "Safe Mode".

6. Scan with DrWeb-CureIt as follows:
  • Double-click on drweb-cureit.exe to start the program. An "Express Scan of your PC" notice will appear.
  • Under "Start the Express Scan Now", Click "OK" to start. This is a short scan that will scan the files currently running in memory and when something is found, click the Yes button when it asks you if you want to cure it.
  • Once the short scan has finished, Click Options > Change settings
  • Choose the "Scan tab" and UNcheck "Heuristic analysis"
  • Back at the main window, click "Select drives" (a red dot will show which drives have been chosen)
  • Then click the "Start/Stop Scanning" button (green arrow on the right) and the scan will start.
  • When done, a message will be displayed at the bottom advising if any viruses were found.
  • Click "Yes to all" if it asks if you want to cure/move the file.
  • When the scan has finished, look if you can see the icon next to the files found. If so, click it, then click the next icon right below and select "Move incurable".
(This will move it to the C:\Documents and Settings\userprofile\DoctorWeb\Quarantine folder if it can't be cured)
  • Next, in the Dr.Web CureIt menu on top, click file and choose save report list.
  • Save the DrWeb.csv report to your desktop.
  • Exit Dr.Web Cureit when done.
  • Important! Reboot your computer because it could be possible that files in use will be moved/deleted during reboot.
  • After reboot, post the contents of the log from Dr.Web in your next reply. (You can use Notepad to open the DrWeb.cvs report)
7. You're using an outdated version of Java (latest one is Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6u2). Older versions have vulnerabilities that malware can use to infect your system. Please update and remove the older versions. Do the following:
  • Go to Start > Control Panel double-click on the Software icon > add/remove programs.
  • Search in the list for all previous installed versions of Java. (J2SE Runtime Environment.... )

It should have next icon next to it: Posted Image
    Select it and click Remove.
  • Then Download and install the newest version from here:

    Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6u2
Please post the C:\vundofix.txt along with uninstall_list.txt, Dr. Web log and a fresh HijackThis log.

Hi sharpie,

thank you so much for all the help.

You're very welcome.

1. Please disable Ewido, as it may interfere with the fixes we will make.

From the system tray:

* Right-click the system tray icon and uncheck real time protection.

or From within Ewido:

* Under 'Your security status', if the real time protection is active, deactivate it by clicking 'real time protection' until the status says 'inactive'.

2. Your uninstall list shows some questionable programmes running:

> You have Limewire installed. Some versions of Limewire come bundled with unwanted programs and malware, some don't and this changes all the time. Limewire 4.14.0 may be OK. Just be aware that, even "clean" P2P program use is high risk:

Risks of File-Sharing Technology
File Sharing, otherwise known as Peer To Peer. (P2P)

You may have Limewire set up more securely, but pay particular attention to susceptibility to attack in those articles. I see many users with folders chock full of malware after using "clean" versions of Limewire. I highly recommend uninstalling it and replacing it with a clean P2P program. You can find a list of clean P2P programs here! It's your choice.

> Your also have Viewpoint Media Player installed. Viewpoint is classed as Foistware and a Potentially unwanted program as its sometimes installed without the users consent, There maybe some indications that they will move into tracking users at some stage which you can read more about Here. If you value the service they provide then it can be left on the system but if not then it can be removed using the Add/Remove screen. More info.

> Themexp.org-File.html is listed as 'unwanted' in BleepingComputer's database.

So if you agree; click on Start, Settings, Control Panel and double-click on Add or Remove Programs. From within Add or Remove Programs uninstall the following programs:

LimeWire 4.14.0
Themexp.org File
Viewpoint Media Player

3. If you removed one or more of the suggested prgrammes reboot

4. Run HijackThis, click Scan and checkmark the following entries:

O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [WhenUSave] "C:\Program Files\Save\Save.exe"

If you agreed to remove LimeWire, check this entry as well:

O4 - Startup: LimeWire On Startup.lnk = C:\Program Files\LimeWire\LimeWire.exe

Close all browsers and windows, except for HijackThis and click the Fix Checked button; close HijackThis!

5. Using Windows Explorer (to get there right-click your Start button and go to "Explore"), please delete the following folders in bold if they exist:

C:\Program Files\Save
C:\Program Files\LimeWire<< If you decided to remove LimeWire

Please reboot, post a fresh HijackThis log and let me know how things are running now.
