Hi, guys! I'm so glad I found this place--I'm about to go nuts from having to deal with pop-ups and crazy evil!ware installing themselves on my machine. I've tried several things, but the problems persist. :flowers:

Please help me. I do much of my work on this computer, and I need to resolve this issue as soon as possible.

Here's what happened:
-I found VirusProtectPro on my desktop and a weird icon on my icon tray (which, when I clicked, gave me an obviously bogus message about spyware). Soon afterward, several (10+) pop-up windows began appearing one by one. Several times, Firefox crashed.

Here's what I did (and the order in which I recall doing them):
-I ran SmitFraudFix.exe in Safe Mode (following the instructions on the following website: http://siri.geekstogo.com/SmitfraudFix.php).
-I updated and ran SpyBot. It detected something called Zlob, but it was unable to remove it.
-I updated and ran Ad-Aware Personal SE. It detected and cleaned up several items. While running Ad-Aware, my anti-virus detected and deleted several items as well.
-I updated and ran my anti-virus just to be on the safe side.
-I downloaded and ran VundoFix.exe. It detected and removed one item.
-I followed all the instructions in the topic Preparation Guide for use before posting a HijackThis Log in the order in which they are given.
-I tried but could not seem to run Housecall Anti Virus, Panda Anti Virus, and Bit Defender because my browser keeps crashing before any of the scans manage to complete.
-Using Sygate Personal Firewall I've blocked the following items:
C:\WINDOWS\system 32\BastaYa.exe
C:\WINDOWS\system 32\italfds.exe
C:\WINDOWS\system 32\richup.exe
Windows Explorer (unsure about this one, but I blocked it anyway...)

Here's my HijackThis logfile:

Hello notenoughrage,

Windows Explorer (unsure about this one, but I blocked it anyway...)

This you can unblock.

Please download Combofix to your desktop.
Doubleclick combo.exe to launch the application.
Follow the prompts that will be displayed on the screen.
Don't click on the window while the fix is running, because that will cause your system to hang.
When finished, it should produce a log, combofix.txt.
Post this log in your next reply together with a new hijackthislog.

Hello notenoughrage,

A. Please RUN HijackThis
  • Click the SCAN button to produce a log.

  • Place a check mark beside each one of the following items:

    R3 - URLSearchHook: (no name) - <default> - (no file)
    O2 - BHO: (no name) - {1C3C4699-B285-475F-BE47-0B26088CE876} - C:\Program Files\Video ActiveX Access\iesplg.dll (file missing)
    O2 - BHO: Big Fish Games - {4E7BD74F-2B8D-469E-86BD-FD60BB9AAE3A} - C:\PROGRA~1\BFGTOO~1\BFGTOO~1.DLL (file missing)
    O2 - BHO: RichEditor Class - {F79A2C4B-8776-4ED7-8B2F-4786A4A3500A} - C:\WINDOWS\system32\richedtr.dll
    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [richup] C:\WINDOWS\system32\richup.exe
    O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [ItalU] C:\WINDOWS\system32\italfds.exe
    O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [LifeCU] C:\WINDOWS\system32\BastaYa.exe
    O20 - AppInit_DLLs: C:\WINDOWS\system32\__c00F7657.dat

  • Now with all the items selected, and all windows closed except for HJT, delete them by clicking the FIX checked button. Close the HijackThis window.

B. 1. Please open Notepad
  • Click Start , then Run
  • Type notepad .exe in the Run Box.
2. Now copy/paste the entire content of the codebox below into the Notepad window:

File::
C:\WINDOWS\system32\wbhlnmhi.exe
C:\WINDOWS\system32\CAUnst.exe
C:\WINDOWS\system32\richedtr.dll
C:\WINDOWS\system32\richup.exe
C:\WINDOWS\system32\italfds.exe
C:\WINDOWS\system32\BastaYa.exe
C:\WINDOWS\system32\__c00F7657.dat

Folder::
C:\VundoFix Backups

3. Save the above as CFScript.txt

4. Then drag the CFScript.txt into ComboFix.exe as depicted in the animation below. This will start ComboFix again.

5. After reboot, (in case it asks to reboot), please post the following reports/logs into your next reply:
  • Combofix.txt
  • A new HijackThis log.

Hello notenoughrage,

Hey, Rip. I hope you're having a good day.

Thank you

Download and install AVG Anti-Spyware v7.5.
  • After download, double click on the file to launch the install process.
  • Choose a language, click "OK" and then click "Next".
  • Read the "License Agreement" and click "I Agree".
  • Accept default installation path: C:\Program Files\Grisoft\AVG Anti-Spyware 7.5, click "Next", then click "Install".
  • After setup completes, click "Finish" to start the program automatically or launch AVG Anti-Spyware by double-clicking its icon on your desktop or in the system tray.
  • Connect to the Internet, go back to AVG Anti-Spyware, select the "Update" button and click "Start update". Wait until you see the "Update successful" message. If you are having problems with the updater, manually update with the AVG Anti-Spyware Full database installer from here.
  • Exit AVG Anti-Spyware when done - DO NOT perform a scan yet.
Reboot your computer in "SAFE MODE" using the F8 method. To do this, restart your computer and after hearing your computer beep once during startup (but before the Windows icon appears) press the F8 key repeatedly. A menu will appear with several options. Use the arrow keys to navigate and select the option to run Windows in "Safe Mode". (Note: When run in safe mode, sometimes the GUI is larger than the screen and the buttons at the bottom are partly or completely hidden, making them unaccessible for doing a scan. If this is the case, press the WINKEY + M key to "Minimize" the AVG display. Then right-click on AVG in the Task Bar and select "Maximize". If that does not help, then you may have to run your scan in normal mode and advise your helper afterwards.)

Scan with AVG Anti-Spyware as follows:
  • Click on the "Scanner" button and choose the "Settings" tab.
  • Under "How to act?", click on "Recommended actions" and choose "Quarantine" to set default action for detected malware.
  • Under "How to Scan?", "Possibly unwanted software", and What to Scan?" leave all the default settings.
  • Under "Reports" select "Automatically generate report after every scan" and UNcheck "Only if threats were found".
  • Click the "Scan" tab to return to scanning options.
  • Click "Complete System Scan" to start.
  • When the scan has finished, it should automatically be set to Quarantine--if not click on Recommended Action and set it there.
  • You will also be presented with a list of infected objects found. Click "Apply all actions" to place the files in Quarantine.
IMPORTANT! Do not save the report before you have clicked the Apply all actions button. If you do, the log that is created will indicate "No action taken", making it more difficult to interpret the report. So be sure you save it only AFTER clicking the "Apply all actions" button.
  • Click on "Save Report" to view all completed scans. Click on the most recent scan you just performed and select "Save report as" - the default file name will be in date/time format as follows: Report-Scan-20060620-142816.txt. Save to your desktop. A copy of each report will also be saved in C:\Program Files\Grisoft\AVG Anti-Spyware 7.5\Reports\
  • Exit AVG Anti-Spyware when done, reboot normally and submit the log report in your next response.
Note: Close all open windows, programs, and DO NOT USE the computer while AVG Anti-Spyware is scanning. Doing so can hamper AVG Anti-Spyware's ability to clean properly and may result in reinfection.

AVG Anti-Spyware is free for 30 days and all the extensions of the full version will be activated. After the 30 day trial, active protection extensions will be deactivated and the program will turn into a feature-limited freeware version that you can can continue to use as an on-demand scanner or you may purchase a license to use the full version.

Rip,

I'm sorry for the delay in replying. I've been having some network issues, so it took a while before I could download AVG Anti-Spyware.

I have followed your instructions, but something isn't working correctly. I've just finished running AVG Anti-Spyware v7.5, and I configured it to the settings you wanted.

After the scan completed, I clicked on "Apply all actions" after making sure that it's set to "Quarantine," but there was no report generated afterward and the "Save Report" button is grayed out. I clicked the "Settings" tab to see if I neglected to select "Automatically generate report after every scan," but it IS selected and the "Only if threats were found" is UNchecked.

Hello notenoughrage,

We'll just skip the AVG log then I guess. Please post back with a new HJT log and an update on how your computer is running,

Rip! My hero, you've replied!

Again I apologize for not having the AVG log. As far as how my computer is running, it's been running fine. Now and again Sygate would prompt me whether to allow a certain thing to connect, but I always make sure to Google some information about it. And if it's something weird or even evil-sounding, I block it from the getgo.

Below is the most recent HijackThis log.

Hello notenoughrage,

Congratulations, your computer is now clean of malware!

Let's clean your restore points and set a new one:

Reset and Re-enable your System Restore to remove infected files that have been backed up by Windows. The files in System Restore are protected to prevent any programs from changing those files. This is the only way to clean these files: (You will lose all previous restore points which are likely to be infected)1. Turn off System Restore. On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
Check Turn off System Restore.
Click Apply, and then click OK.
2. Restart your computer.

3. Turn ON System Restore. On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
UN-Check Turn off System Restore.
Click Apply, and then click OK.
[/list]System Restore will now be active again.

Now that you are clean, please follow these simple steps in order to keep your computer clean and secure:
  • Make your Internet Explorer more secure - This can be done by following these simple instructions:
    • From within Internet Explorer click on the Tools menu and then click on Options.
    • Click once on the Security tab
    • Click once on the Internet icon so it becomes highlighted.
    • Click once on the Custom Level button.
      • Change the Download signed ActiveX controls to Prompt
      • Change the Download unsigned ActiveX controls to Disable
      • Change the Initialize and script ActiveX controls not marked as safe to Disable
      • Change the Installation of desktop items to Prompt
      • Change the Launching programs and files in an IFRAME to Prompt
      • Change the Navigate sub-frames across different domains to Prompt
      • When all these settings have been made, click on the OK button.
      • If it prompts you as to whether or not you want to save the settings, press the Yes button.
    • Next press the Apply button and then the OK to exit the Internet Properties page.
  • Use an AntiVirus Software - It is very important that your computer has an anti-virus software running on your machine. This alone can save you a lot of trouble with malware in the future.

See this link for a listing of some online & their stand-alone antivirus programs:

Virus, Spyware, and Malware Protection and Removal Resources
  • Update your AntiVirus Software - It is imperitive that you update your Antivirus software at least once a week (Even more if you wish). If you do not update your antivirus software then it will not be able to catch any of the new variants that may come out.
  • Use a Firewall - I can not stress how important it is that you use a Firewall on your computer. Without a firewall your computer is succeptible to being hacked and taken over. I am very serious about this and see it happen almost every day with my clients. Simply using a Firewall in its default configuration can lower your risk greatly.

For a tutorial on Firewalls and a listing of some available ones see the link below:

    Understanding and Using Firewalls
  • Visit Microsoft's Windows Update Site Frequently - It is important that you visit http://www.windowsupdate.com regularly. This will ensure your computer has always the latest security updates available installed on your computer. If there are new updates to install, install them immediately, reboot your computer, and revisit the site until there are no more critical updates.
  • Install SpywareBlaster - SpywareBlaster will added a large list of programs and sites into your Internet Explorer settings that will protect you from running and downloading known malicious programs.

A tutorial on installing & using this product can be found here:

Using SpywareBlaster to protect your computer from Spyware and Malware
  • Update all these programs regularly - Make sure you update all the programs I have listed regularly. Without regular updates you WILL NOT be protected when new malicious programs are released.
Follow this list and your potential for being infected again will reduce dramatically.

here are some additional utilities that will enhance your safety
  • IE/Spyad <= IE/Spyad places over 4000 websites and domains in the IE Restricted list which will severely impair attempts to infect your system. It basically prevents any downloads (Cookies etc) from the sites listed, although you will still be able to connect to the sites.
  • MVPS Hosts file <= The MVPS Hosts file replaces your current HOSTS file with one containing well know ad sites etc. Basically, this prevents your coputer from connecting to those sites by redirecting them to 127.0.0.1 which is your local computer
  • Google Toolbar <= Get the free google toolbar to help stop pop up windows.
  • Winpatrol <= Download and install the free version of Winpatrol. a tutorial for this product is located here:
Using Winpatrol to protect your computer from malicious software
