I have been having problems with outlook express recently - the message body is blank and contains the hourglass when moving the cursor over that area. The "microsoft outlook express forum" gave me a fix to register a dll (which works) - problem is I have to run this fix every time I log on. CWshredder does not help.
The problem seems to be the last item in this log (018 Protocol hijack mhtml). When I use hijackthis to fix this - item outlook express works fine. But when I reboot and scan again item 018 is back in the scanned items and until I fix it or run the below I cannot see my messages.

You are infected with a variant of the CoolWebSearch.

Download CWShredder from the below link and unzip it into a directory. Start CWShredder and click on the FIx button to have it remove all CWS infections it finds.

After you download the program, unzip it into a directory. Make sure all browser windows are closed and double click on the cwshredder.exe to start the program. When the program is loaded click on the "Check for Update" button, and if it finds an new version it will download it. You should then double click on cwshredder.exe again and click on the "FIX" button (not the "Scan only" button) and let it scan your computer.

To get the best results it is recommended that you run it in safe mode. Reboot windows and press F8 at boot/windows startup, usually right after the beep. Then select safe mode.

Once that is completed you should follow these steps in order to clean your computer of Malware which can include Viruses, Trojans, Worms, Spyware, Hijackers and Dialers

Step 1:
Download Spybot and Adaware from the following locations and install them. You should run both programs and clean up what it finds. This is to gaurantee that you find the most malware you can installed on your computer.

Before running the scans on both programs, it is mandatory that you update the programs. There are update options in each program when you run them.

Ad-aware

If you would like to learn more about how to use these two programs with the proper settings you can read the tutorials below:

AD-AWARE - Using Ad-aware to remove Spyware/Hijackers from Your Computer.

SPYBOT SEARCH AND DESTROY - Using Spybot - Search & Destroy to remove Spyware from Your Computer.


When you scan with both programs, fix everything that it finds.

When you are done with the scan and fixing the items. Please continue with the next step.

Step 2:

It is important that you run Spybot and Adaware before you proceed with this step. Fixing enties with Hijackthis may leave behind unwanted files on your computer if the previous step was not done first.

Create a directory on your hardrive to save HijackThis.exe. A directory like c:\hijackthis. If you do not do this, you will not be able to use the backup/restore features.

Download HijackThis from:

Save this file into the directory you made previously and then run the program. Click on the Scan button and when it is finished click on the Save Log button. A Notepad window will open with the contents of this log. Click on Edit then click on Select all. Then click on Edit and then Click on Copy.

Create a reply to this post, and right click in message area and select paste to paste the log into the post.

OK I ran CWshredder (after rebooting in safe mode) no change.
I noticed tha when I came up in safe mode there was no problem, but after running CWshredder and rebooting in the normal fashion the problem was back.
Something seems to reinfect each time I reboot.
I previously had tried CWshredder with no success a few days ago, but thought the safe mode was a good idea, sadly no joy.
I also have been running ad-aware recently but have been unable to download SPYBOT since yesterday - I have tried half a dozen times.

Just want to say thanks for all your help. You guys here do a great job.
I know you are very busy helping other people but if you geta chance I would love to know just waht we did to fix this - how did you know which entries were causing the problem? Anything you could tell me which you think I might understand. I am a mainframe programmer I use a PC at work but don't do any programming on it, but I do understanf the basics.

Also I was recommended to uninstall MS Java and install Sun Java VM instead - do you think this is a good idea?

If you don't have the time to get back to me I will understand.

Definitely remove msjava nd install sunjava. Wont go wrong there as there quite a few types of infections that are installed via bug through msjava.

As to how we know whats bad here are some simple guidelines, but they are in no way rules that are to be followed in all cases and circumstances.

1. O4 entries that are in a users profile (c:\documents and settings\username\....) are bad more often than not.

2. O4 entries with exe's running from temp directories are bad more often than not.

3. RO/R1 entries you just start to learn from experience. I also verify them by actually going to the site if I do not recognize it.

4. O16 and O3's come from experiences and google searches etc. Some are actually figured out by downloading them and actually checking the characteristics and contents of the files.

There are many more ways to learn how to do this and a lot of it comes from experience. Hope this explains it a little bit.
